The silence was the most terrifying sound I had ever heard.

"We have to find her," I said, already moving toward the hallway that led deeper into the motel.

"Emily, wait," Alex called after me. "This could be another trap."

"I do not care if it is a trap. Sophia could be dying."

Miguel still had Vanessa pinned to the floor, but she had stopped struggling. She was just lying there with that awful smile, like she knew something we did not.

"Room twelve," she said suddenly. "If you want to find your little accountant friend, try room twelve."

"Why are you telling us?" Miguel asked suspiciously.

"Because the fun is just beginning."

Mrs. Martinez grabbed a flashlight from behind her desk. "I will show you where room twelve is."

"Mrs. Martinez, you should stay here," Alex said.

The scream came again, echoing through the building like something out of a nightmare. It was definitely Sophia - I recognized her voice from our coffee shop meeting, but now it was raw with terror and pain."Where is she?" Miguel demanded, stepping toward Vanessa."Careful, darling," Vanessa said, holding up the remote. "One wrong move and Sophia's situation becomes much worse."The emergency lighting cast everything in that hellish red glow, making Vanessa look like something from a horror movie. Mrs. Martinez sat frozen behind her desk, watching her daughter with a mixture of fear and heartbreak."Vanessa," Mrs. Martinez said quietly, "please. These people have done nothing to you. Let them go.""Nothing to me?" Vanessa laughed, and it was not a sound any human should make. "Mother, they have destroyed everything I worked for. Everything I built. Everything I deserved."

Moving back into Alex's house felt like walking into a dream where everything looked familiar but nothing made sense anymore. The same marble floors, the same expensive furniture, the same cold elegance that used to make me feel so small and out of place.Except now I was not alone.Miguel carried his single duffel bag up the front steps like he owned the place, which I guess he sort of did. This was his childhood home too, before everything went wrong between the brothers."Your room is still exactly the same," Alex told Miguel as we stood in the grand foyer. "Third floor, east wing. Unless you would rather stay somewhere else.""My room is fine."The tension between them was thick enough to cut with a knife. Five years of thinking the other was dead or didn't care had left scars that were not going to heal overnight."And Emily," Alex said, turning to me, "

The sirens were getting closer, but Vanessa was not the type of woman to go down without a fight."You think this is over?" she asked, her voice dropping to something cold and dangerous. "You think a few police cars are going to fix everything?"Alex stepped closer to where Miguel and I were standing. "Vanessa, just put the gun down. Whatever you have done, whatever you are planning, it does not have to end like this.""Does it not?" She backed toward the French doors leading to the garden, keeping the gun trained on all three of us. "Alex, darling, do you really think I have spent three years planning this just to give up because of a few sirens?""Three years?""Oh, sweetheart. This started long before you even met Emily. This started the day I realized that Alexander Reed was exactly the kind of man who could give me the life I deserved."The sirens were r

I had maybe thirty seconds before Vanessa walked through that front door and found Miguel inside with Alex. Thirty seconds to figure out how to save the man I loved from a woman who had already threatened to kill us all.The back garden was exactly as I remembered it - overgrown roses, stone pathway, that old trellis we had climbed down the night before. I could see lights on in Alex's study through the French doors. He and Miguel were in there, probably having the conversation that could save Alex's life or get Miguel killed.I ran to the French doors and started banging on the glass.Through the window, I could see Alex and Miguel both turn toward the sound. Alex looked furious - probably thought I was some crazy ex-wife stalking him. Miguel looked terrified when he saw the panic on my face.I pressed my face to the glass and mouthed "VANESSA" as clearly as I could.Miguel got

Saturday morning came too fast and too slow at the same time. I had barely slept, tossing around while Miguel painted by the window. Every time I closed my eyes, I kept hearing Alex's voice in that hallway, talking about catching us in the act of something."You should eat something," Miguel said around seven, bringing me a cup of coffee and some toast."Not hungry.""Emily, you need to eat. We have to go see Detective Morrison in an hour, and you are going to pass out if you do not put something in your stomach."I forced down half the toast just to make him stop looking so worried. The estate planning documents were spread across our little table like evidence from a crime scene. Which, I guess, they were."What if he still does not believe us?" I asked."Then we figure out something else.""Like what?"Miguel sat d
