Chapter 2

Sophie’s Pov

“Rinaaaaaaaaa” I yelled for what seemed like the fifth time, just as my eyes moved quickly to the wall clock which was hanged at the far top of the wall.

I clutched both Rina’s lunch box and her school bag in my left hand while I tried to use my right hand to arrange my hair which already seemed out of place “If you do not come here this minute Rina, I swear I’ll come get you myself” I shouted even more angrily.

I had a job interview to meet up with and Rina wasn’t making it any easy for me “Sorry mummy” Rina rushed in while giving her signature puppy face.

I sighed while I ruched to the kitchen to ensure the gas was locked “Hope you didn’t forget something?” I asked in a warning tone, because I wouldn’t have the luxury of time to rush back.

“Nop” Rina replied popping the ‘p’ while I took her hand and pulled her out of the sitting room, locking the door behind me.

Just across the road I was lucky to have found a taxi who drove me down to Rina’s school, after I had dropped her off we further headed to my destination.

“Hurry up please” I said to the driver just as my eyes caught the time and I realized it was past nine, I was already ten minutes late.

We arrived at Lightwood Company after a few minutes and I hurried out of the taxi but not before squeezing a few dollar notes to the driver and then telling him to keep the change.

The company which seems like the highest I had seen stood tall and dazzling among other companies in the city of New-York.

The sign “Lightwood Company” shone brightly with the help of the scotching sun.

“Shit” I cursed silently, I was starting to admire the building that I had forgotten I was now about twenty-five minutes late. I rushed inside and headed directly towards the elevator.

I had to wait a few minutes since the elevator hadn’t yet arrived, a bunch of neatly well dressed people got out immediately it arrive and I rushed past them into the elevator, pressing the 7th floor since it was stated in the email sent to us.

I stepped out of the elevator after it had arrived and walked down the quiet hallway which had just one desk at the end of it and several other doors.

The brown haired lady with big rimmed glass who sat at the desk seemed not to have noticed me even when I stood just right in front of her. Her hands moved in a flashlight typing some words into the computer.

“Uhm...hmmm” I cleared my throat hopefully I’ll get her attention.

She looked up and her face melted into a smile “Goodday Ma’m, How May I help you” She said more politely than I had expected from a secretary at a extremely big firm.

“I’m here for the interview” I told her wrapping my hands nervously together.

“Ohhh” Her smile died down “I’m sorry ma’m but we are done with that” She started politely.

My heart started to race and if I wasn’t slightly resting on the desk, I would have fell down that minute. It was over, everything was over “I’m sorry ma’m, But is there anything you can do to help me?” I pleaded hopefully “Maybe meet with someone who’s in charge and drop off my cv” I added hurriedly.

I really wanted the job, it would be a fresh start to everything. I also couldn’t forget the fact that my rent was expiring very soon and I have Rina’s bills to keep up with.

The receptionist seemed to hesitate for a minute but then she nodded “Why don’t you drop it off with me and I’ll see what I can do” She said to me with a tone that said ‘I’m not promising anything’

I thanked her wholeheartedly while I handed her my cv. I took the elevator down to the lobby and then exited the company.

Since I had no job, no place to go to and I didn’t want to go back home and then wasting transport to go pick up Rina later in the day, I decided to walk around and burn time.

After Chris left six years ago, and mom threw me out of her house. I had to live off Gia since I had no savings and I was fired from the place I used to worked then.

After I successfully had Rina, I still continued to live with Gia while I applied for a community college to study Business inter-relation and also had to work part time so I wouldn’t solely depend on Gia, I had only moved out two years ago.

I had only quitted my part time job a few weeks ago and working at Lightwood Company was my only and best chance, since other firms I knew about didn’t have any open position at the moment.

I spent my time walking down busy roads and stopped a few times for a cup of coffee and once for a cup of ice cream. I headed to Rina’s school to pick her up when it was past three, since it was past her closing time.

I boarded a taxi which I instructed to wait for me while I rushed over to pick up Rina “Thanks a lot” I said to Rina’s teacher while I helped Rina with her backpack and we both rushed towards the taxi who I believe wouldn’t be very patient if I had stayed longer.

After we had arrived home, I set to make dinner. My heart raced a few times when my phone rang but then the butterflies I felt inside died when I realized it was either a call from the bank to remind me of my due loan, or my landlord to remind me of my due rent.

“Mommy, your phone” Rina walked into the kitchen for the third time with my phone in her tiny hand.

I sighed while I shook my head, I had hope Lightwood company would call but just as the receptionist had said, I shouldn’t expect anything, after all I wasn’t so different from other applicants and unlike them I missed my interview.

“Mommy” Rina groaned this time bringing the phone even closer to me.

I took the phone from her and hissed at the unidentified number while I answered and placed the phone in between my ear and shoulder “Yes” I answered harshly.

“Miss Wells?” A rich lady’s voice came up from the other side.

I dropped the plate which I held on my other hand while I held my phone to my ear firmly “Yes, you’re speaking to Miss Wells” I replied nervously, knowing fulling well now that it was the company calling.

“Congratulations ma’m, You just got yourself a position at Lightwood” The voice came up again and I held my lips to stop myself from screaming even though I already was in my head “You’re expected to resume work on Monday, 8am, every other details will be forwarded to your email, do have a nice day ma’m” She said and then ended the call.

“Rina” I called walking towards the sitting room where I had figured she would be “Rina” I called again this time more anxiously and happily, and when I found her playing doll I swept her into my arms hugging her more than I had ever did.

I was certain heaven finally approved of me, this was a new beginning for me and for the past one year it was all I had ever hoped for.
