LOGINChapter 3
If there was one thing I understood clearly after my first ten minutes at Montefalco Holdings, it was this: Sebastian Montefalco hated me. Not disliked. Not mistrusted. Hated. The way he had looked at me earlier still lingered in my mind like a shadow I couldn’t shake off. Cold. Sharp. Accusing. As if I had personally destroyed something precious to him. And maybe, in his eyes, I had. Because in his version of the story, I was the woman who had driven his brother away. The woman who had ruined Donn Montefalco’s life. The irony of it made my chest ache. I hadn’t ruined anything. I had been the one left behind. “Avah?” I blinked, realizing Carla was still standing beside me. “Sorry,” I said quickly. She gave me a sympathetic look. “Don’t worry about him.” “About who?” She raised an eyebrow. “The Ice King.” I frowned slightly. “The what?” Carla leaned closer and lowered her voice. “That’s what people here call Mr. Montefalco.” I glanced down the hallway where Sebastian had disappeared. “The Ice King?” “Well… he’s brilliant,” she said. “But he’s also terrifying.” “That’s comforting.” Carla laughed quietly. “He rarely talks to employees directly. You must have impressed him during the hiring process.” I doubted that. From the way he spoke to me, it seemed more likely that he approved my hiring so he could keep an eye on me. Or make my life miserable. Carla gestured toward the desk beside us. “This is your workspace.” The desk was modern and neatly organized. A computer. A tablet. A stack of folders. “Your team will arrive soon,” she continued. “But first you’ll need to attend a briefing.” “A briefing?” She nodded. “With Mr. Montefalco.” Of course. Because apparently fate enjoyed making my life uncomfortable. “Conference room B,” she said. Then she gave my shoulder a small encouraging squeeze before walking away. I stared at the hallway for a moment. Conference room B. With Sebastian Montefalco. Wonderful. I picked up the tablet from my desk and forced myself to walk toward the conference room. Every step felt heavier than the last. When I reached the door, I took a slow breath before pushing it open. Inside, several employees were already seated around the large glass table. And at the head of the table sat Sebastian. The moment I stepped inside, his eyes lifted. They locked onto mine immediately. I felt that same strange tension again. Like the air between us had suddenly become electric. I quickly looked away and took an empty seat. The meeting began a few minutes later. Sebastian stood slowly, resting his hands on the table. “Montefalco Holdings will be launching a new international project next quarter,” he said. His voice was calm. Confident. Commanding. Everyone in the room listened carefully. “This project will expand our presence across Southeast Asia,” he continued. Slides appeared on the large screen behind him. Charts. Strategies. Marketing projections. I focused on taking notes, trying not to notice how often Sebastian’s gaze drifted toward me. But I felt it. Every time. Watching. Observing. Judging. After nearly thirty minutes, the presentation ended. Employees began gathering their materials. But just as I was about to stand, Sebastian spoke again. “Miss Alfonso.” My heart dropped slightly. “Yes?” “Stay for a moment.” The others left the room quickly. Within seconds, we were alone. The silence between us felt heavy. Sebastian slowly walked toward the window overlooking the city. For a moment, he didn’t speak. Then he turned to face me. “Tell me something,” he said. “What is it?” “Why did you accept this job?” The question caught me off guard. “I already told you,” I said carefully. “It’s a professional opportunity.” His expression didn’t change. “You knew whose company this was.” “Yes.” “And yet you still came.” “Yes.” He studied my face quietly. “You’re either very brave,” he said slowly. “Or very foolish.” I crossed my arms slightly. “Or maybe I just needed a job.” His eyes narrowed slightly. “After what happened with my brother?” The words stung. “What happened with your brother,” I said carefully, “wasn’t my fault.” For the first time, something sharp flashed in his expression. “You expect me to believe that?” I held his gaze. “You don’t have to believe anything.” Another silence fell between us. Then Sebastian stepped closer. Close enough that I could feel the intensity of his presence. “Donn disappeared the morning of your wedding,” he said quietly. “Yes.” “He left the country.” My breath caught. “What?” Sebastian watched my reaction carefully. “You didn’t know that?” “No.” My voice sounded almost like a whisper. That was impossible. Donn had left the country? Why would he do that? Sebastian’s gaze hardened slightly. “Interesting.” “What is?” “You look genuinely surprised.” “Because I am.” He studied my face for a long moment. Like he was trying to decide whether I was lying. Finally, he stepped back. “Be careful, Miss Alfonso.” “About what?” “Working here.” His voice dropped slightly. “Because if I discover that you had anything to do with my brother’s disappearance…” He didn’t finish the sentence. He didn’t need to. The warning was clear. My heart pounded in my chest. But I refused to look intimidated. “I didn’t make your brother leave,” I said firmly. Sebastian’s eyes darkened. “We’ll see.” And for the first time since I met him… I realized something unsettling. Sebastian Montefalco might hate me. But he was also watching me very closely. One I didn’t even know existed. And somehow, Sebastian Montefalco seemed determined to uncover it.Chapter 24Victor’s face appeared under the cabin light. For a second, no one moved. No one breathed. My heart dropped straight to my stomach.“You,” Sebastian said quietly.Victor smiled.“I was wondering how long it would take you to figure it out.”Rafael turned slowly toward him.“You’re pointing a gun at the wrong person.”Victor shrugged.“I disagree.”The gun stayed aimed directly at Sebastian’s chest.Donn stepped forward immediately.“You’re insane.”Victor laughed softly.“No.”“I’m ambitious.”Sebastian didn’t move. His eyes stayed locked on Victor.“You’ve been working for my uncle this entire time.”Victor shook his head.“That’s the funny part.”He glanced toward Rafael.“I was never working for him.”Rafael’s calm expression finally cracked.“What?”Victor smiled wider.“I was using you.”The cabin air suddenly felt electric.Rafael’s voice dropped.“You’re making a mistake.”“No,” Victor said.“You did.”Victor gestured toward the small device Rafael had shown earlier.
Chapter 23The cabin door handle rattled again.Slow.Deliberate.The man outside wasn’t in a hurry.Which somehow made it worse.“Open the door, Sebastian,” the voice said calmly. My stomach tightened.I looked at Sebastian. His expression had completely changed. The calm CEO mask was gone. This was something deeper.Something personal.“You don’t have to open it,” I whispered.Sebastian didn’t answer.Donn stepped closer to him.“Don’t do it,” Donn said.“That man doesn’t come here to talk.”Sebastian’s jaw tightened.“I know.”Another knock. This time louder.“Sebastian,” the voice called again.“You’ve always been a polite host.”The cabin suddenly felt very small.Very fragile.“Who is he really?” I asked quietly.Sebastian finally spoke.“My father’s younger brother.”I frowned.“Your uncle?”“Yes.”Donn snorted.“Don’t make him sound harmless.”Sebastian’s eyes remained on the door.“He isn’t.”The voice outside chuckled softly.“You’re making me wait.”Sebastian exhaled slowly
Chapter 22We didn’t stop running until my lungs burned.Branches scratched against my arms as we pushed deeper through the trees. The forest behind the safe house felt endless, dark and uneven under our feet.I almost tripped twice. Each time, Sebastian’s hand caught my arm before I hit the ground.“Careful,” he said quietly.“I’m trying,” I breathed.Donn ran a few steps ahead of us, glancing back every few seconds.“They’re still behind us,” he said.“How close?” Sebastian asked.“Too close.”That wasn’t comforting. We kept moving. My legs were shaking now, but the sound of distant voices behind us kept my adrenaline going. Finally, the trees began thinning.A narrow dirt road appeared ahead. And beside it,A small wooden cabin.Sebastian stopped.“That’s not one of yours,” Donn said.“No.”“So we’re breaking in?”Sebastian didn’t hesitate.“Yes.”For once, Donn didn’t argue.Sebastian pushed the cabin door open. The place was old but clean. A single lamp sat on a small table, and
Chapter 21The moment Victor disappeared into the darkness outside the safe house, the air inside the room felt heavier.Like the walls themselves knew trouble was coming.I stood frozen for a moment, trying to process everything he had just said.My father. The encryption system. My fingerprint. The reason Donn disappeared. The reason people were hunting Sebastian. All of it somehow connected to me.“That can’t be real,” I whispered.Sebastian turned toward me.“I wish it wasn’t.”I ran a hand through my hair, trying to steady my breathing.“My father never told me anything like that.”“He wouldn’t have,” Sebastian said.“Why not?”“Because if anyone knew you were the key to the system, you would have been a target much sooner.”A cold shiver ran down my spine.“So he kept it secret… to protect me?”“Yes.”Donn leaned against the counter.“And unfortunately, I discovered the truth first.”I looked at him sharply.“How?”He hesitated.“Because the people I owed money to were already i
Chapter 20 Victor’s words echoed through the broken doorway. “…the real secret Donn has been hiding… is about you.” My heart began pounding. “What are you talking about?” I asked. Victor stepped slowly inside the safe house as if he had every right to be there. Sebastian didn’t lower the gun. “Stop right there,” he said coldly. Victor raised his hands slightly. “I’m not here to fight.” “That’s not convincing.” Victor smiled. “I believe you already proved who would win that fight.” His eyes shifted toward me again. “There she is.” A chill crawled up my spine. “Why are you looking at me like that?” I asked. Victor tilted his head slightly. “Because you’re far more valuable than you realize.” Sebastian stepped closer to me instantly, placing himself between Victor and me. “You say another word about her and you’re leaving in an ambulance.” Victor chuckled softly. “Protective as always.” “Get to the point,” Sebastian snapped. Victor sighed like he was disappointed
Chapter 19 The alarm on the monitor continued to flash red. My heart started racing again. Sebastian moved quickly toward the wall of security screens. Two black vehicles had stopped outside the metal gate of the property. Headlights cut through the darkness of the quiet road. Three men stepped out. I recognized one of them immediately. “Well,” Sebastian said quietly. “That was faster than expected.” My stomach tightened. “Is that him?” “Yes.” Victor Alvarez. Sebastian’s chief financial officer. The man Donn believed was helping the people hunting us. Victor stood outside the gate like he belonged there. Tall. Well dressed. Calm. Too calm. Donn walked into the room behind us. “What’s happening?” Sebastian pointed at the screen. Donn’s face darkened. “That’s him.” Victor pressed the intercom beside the gate. A moment later, his voice echoed through the speakers inside the safe house. “Sebastian.” The sound of his voice made the air feel colder. Sebastian d

Chapter 16 For a moment after Donn’s words, the entire café seemed frozen. The CEO of Montefalco Holdings. Alive… or dead. My heart was pounding so loudly I could barely hear the sounds of the street around us. “You’re joking,” I said weakly. Donn didn’t smile. “I wish I was.” Sebastian lea
Chapter 15 The drive to the café felt much longer than it should have. Sebastian drove. Fast. The city rushed past the windows as the morning traffic slowly began to thicken. Buildings, people, and passing cars blurred together, but inside the car, the silence between us felt heavy. My heart r
