SIRI

It was just one country between him and England, and I could see that weight in his shoulders growing. I could see the circles around his eyes changing to purple, and he spoke less and less.

And I felt fucking useless.

Useless because I didn't know what to do for him. I knew words wouldn't help, so I didn't bother. And I felt like the worst person to exist on this fucking planet. He would have done something for me. If I were the one with this weight on my chest, Jackson would have found a way to take it off, but I had… nothing.

And that only added to the voices that say I don't deserve him. That he was a better person than I’ll ever be, and all I was doing was hurting him and giving him fucking excuses.

“I know,” I whispered to those stupid voices as I stared at myself in the mirror, my reflection looking… wrong.

My eyes looked too dark, my eyebrows pulled into a tight frown. My lips were pressed into a tight line, and I looked so much like… like my father.

I barely saw him like this. He barely frowned or even showed any emotions, but in the few things that he had, the look on his face had scared me. And right now, I had that look on my face as well. That scared me more than anything.

I pointed a shaky finger to the girl in the mirror, and the monster pointed back at me.

“You. Are. Not. Him,” I snarled, keeping my voice low so Jackson wouldn't hear me and think I had gone crazy, which I have. “Marshall cares for no one but himself. He doesn't feel emotion. He isn't capable of it, but you are, Siri.”

In my twenty-one years of living, that morning when my life was falling apart was the first and probably the last time I saw strong emotions on his face. It was the only time I saw how human he was.

“You feel everything greatly. Too greatly, so you are nothing like him, you hear me?”

But maybe that was the only difference between us: the fact that I felt things and he didn't. Maybe that was the only thing that made us separate beings. He was a con man, an actor in a way, and for the past few days, I've been an actor as well.

I’ve been acting with Jackson, acting like I was fine. Like I wasn't freaking out every time he touched me. Like every time I saw that tender look in his eyes and saw myself mirroring it, I wasn't fighting the urge to pull my hair.

I could see that this feeling between us wasn't just mere “like” anymore. It was more than that, and to me, more was always scary. So I've been acting, and acting really well, because he hasn't noticed a thing was off.

“What is wrong with you, Siri?” I asked, my voice breaking, looking at myself through a vision blurry with tears. “Huh? Tell me, please? What is wrong with me? Why… Why can’t I just accept this? Why can’t I just go with the flow? Why do I have to think negative things?”

“Because negative things are all you’ve felt in your damn life,” that stupid, stupid voice in my head that sounds so much like Marshall’s whispered. “Because that is all you’re capable of.”

My shoulders dropped, my head hanging between them as I squeezed my eyes shut, the tears dripping out anyway.

I needed help. Maybe… maybe therapy would be nice. If I didn't think about the huge amount I’ll be paying to just gossip about my problems with a person who just nods and pretends to write things down, then maybe therapy is exactly what I need.

Because this wasn't just about Michael or the scar he left. This was about everything that happened before him, everything Marshall taught me about trust and love, and how badly it all fucked me up.

And Jackson deserved so much better than this fucked up shell that I was. He deserves someone who doesn't act with him.

~.~

“You okay, darling?” Jackson asked with a small smile when I finally stepped out of the bathroom.

He was shirtless, now on the couch, his iPad on his lap, legs resting on the table, crossed over his ankle. His hair was messy, dark strands falling into his face and almost covering his eyes. It was longer on the top now, giving him this playboy look, and just looking at this sexy being had the tension leaving my shoulders.

“I was about to come give you a blanket and pillow since it felt like you were going to sleep in there.”

“Haha,” I said dryly as I sat beside him on the couch, and he drew me closer to him with one arm around my shoulder. I looked at him as he scrolled through his iPad, watching Berlin's past game. “And you? Are you okay?”

His smile dimmed, his shoulders stiffening. He stared blankly at his iPad, but when he turned to me, his eyes had a false shine to them.

“Yeah. I am. Berlin is the last game standing between me and home.”

“But do you want to go home, Jackson? You’re not exactly going there to go shake hands with your old team and drink beer, you know?”

He looked back at the iPad, the sound from the device the only one between us for a while, before he answered softly, “Honestly… I… I am. Even though I'm not going there on friendly terms, I'm still excited to go home. I spent my life there, Siri.”

He looked at me again, and this time, the shine there was genuine, soft.

“Those people are more than just a team to me: they are family. Almost everybody in that town was part of my life growing up. So… yeah. Yeah, Siri, I'm pretty excited to go back home. And I'm nervous as hell too.”

I rested my head on his chest, feeling his steady, strong heartbeat. “And I'll be there.” Even though that'll barely do shit, or even mean anything.

But Jackson’s arm tightened around my waist, and slowly, I felt the tension bleed away from his shoulders.

“And you have no bloody idea how much that means to me.”

My throat was too tight to form words, so I just rubbed my face on his chest, and he hummed, almost like a damn purr. He dropped his iPad and caressed my ear with his thumb as he cupped the side of my face, his eyes bright and filled with so many things that made me want to hide.

“Let’s go explore Berlin, shall we, my darling? We should be spending every second out there. Our world tour is coming to an end, after all.”

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Today's Joy. Tomorrow's Pain

Yeah, fuck Toria and her stupid advice. Fuck that happy ending nonsense. Sure, I do want a happy ending with him. I want a happy beginning, middle, and ending with Jackson. All of that and more! Damn it, I had even been thinking of the perfect future together with him. Yes—and fuck you—I’ve been thinking of going somewhere with him, getting a house, three dogs, and maybe one cat. We could live like that for a few years, then get married, and decide if we wanted kids. I'd already mapped out the perfect future, the perfect ending. So yeah… Use him? USE him? How on God’s green earth can I use him when I was in love with him? I was madly in love with that man, and it made me realize that I was never in love with Michael. No. No, I was just in love with the attention and the idea of love, the idea that someone finally wants me. But this painful shit with Jackson? This soul-crashing devastation? Yeah, this was love. This was love in its purest, fucked up form.So how was I going to us

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Stay And Use

“I thought you might be gone already,” Toria said as we settled into my hotel room. “Jackson already booked my flight,” I said, opening a beer. “I leave in two days.”“Hmm. So what are you going to do till then? Stay cranked up in here?”“Probably.”“I could show you around, you know.”I thought about it for a second and shook my head, sipping my drink. “Thank you, but no.”I had thought about leaving and just going to tour on my own, but every time I thought about the possibility that I might run into him out there, I shook off that thought. Maybe I would have seen him with his hand around another woman’s waist, laughing with the boys and acting like that night didn't happen. But seeing him on screen tonight, I don't think any of that might have happened. I wanted to ask Toria what happened and why he looked that way, but then I might sound like I care, which I very much do, and I wanted to stay cool and keep up this nonchalant act until I was out of here. And so I sipped my drink

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Play The Fool Again

SIRIHe… lost. I stared at the TV screen in my small hotel room, my eyes wide, hands squeezed together and pressed to my chest.“He lost,” I whispered it out loud like it would make sense if I did so. I told myself I wasn't going to watch the game, that I would stay away from my screen and just wait for my flight back home two days from now, but I couldn't. I couldn't let the chance of seeing him, even though it was from a screen, slip away. As soon as his team had skated onto the ice and the camera zoomed in on them, my eyes had found him immediately, and I knew something was wrong. His skin was too pale, his eyes looked too sunken, and he kept flexing his wrists over and over, to the point I was sure everyone in the arena must have noticed. And I could have sworn that he was trembling. The game started, and it was even worse. Everything about the way he moved, to the way he could no longer hide his trembling, was wrong. It filled my heart with dread and panic. I couldn't relax a

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Repented And Born Again

PRESENTThe smoke of that cigar, laced with a chocolate scent, burned into my nose even though he was across the street. The scent was the same: the cigar lit, resting on his lips, lifted in a smile. A small smile, soft and gentle. Not like that frightening smile he had on his face that night that still sends a chill down my spine. Elijah M’Call still looked the same even seven years later. His black hair was slicked back from his face, dotted with gray. His grey eyes were wrinkled at the corners from age. His shoulders were still broad beneath his tailored suit, and black leather gloves covered his hands. He still looked and dressed the same. Nothing had changed. After that night, I had cut every tie with this man. I made sure I never heard a word from him or received a single penny. I moved into Jacob’s house, and his mother accepted me without a single complaint, letting me stay until I could rent my own place. I didn't speak to my mother for two years after that. She came to my

CONTENT WARNING: This chapter contains references to domestic abuse and may be triggering to some readers. Reader discretion is advised. ~.~“I can think of a few things that can make you quit hockey,” my father said, his voice relaxed, but his face was filled with hell. He stood chest to chest with me, and I fought every instinct screaming at me to lower my eyes, to pull back. I fought them and stood perfectly still, not letting that dark look intimidate me.“What?” I spat. “Are you going to pay the coach to kick me out of the team? Then I'll just find another team to join.”“Jackson, please,” my mother whispered, and that just made my fists clench harder. Why was she calling me back and not her husband? He was the one threatening to take my dream away from me! My hopes for a better future, and still I was the one being called back? Did she really think I would just roll over and accept this bullshit? Bloody no. “That is way beneath me, Jackson,” he said in a low voice, acting li

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Just A Little More

SEVEN YEARS AGOThe sun had long since set, and the neighborhood was dark by the time I strolled in through the back door, my shoes tied together by their laces and hanging around my neck, my hands shoved into my pockets. Hopefully my parents were asleep by now, and I wouldn't have to deal with either of them. It was exhausting to look into their eyes these days and act like everything was fine when I harbored a little bit of hatred for my father. Okay, maybe it was more than a little bit, but I won’t tell if you don’t. I spent time at Jacob’s house long after practice, then came home and lied through my teeth, saying the coach sucked us dry with practice, which is why I was so late. You can’t blame me. The atmosphere in this house was depressing, and hearing my father whistle while he smoked his cigar, acting like all was right and fair in the world, was pissing me off when I could see my mother was losing weight, when I could clearly see she was losing her shine. She just needed
