JACKSON

“Jackson? Are you awake?”

My arms tightened around her. “I am, sweetheart. Something on your mind?”

She shifted away from my arms, and there was an insecure, foolish part of me that wanted to drag her back to me. A foolish part of me that doesn't want to be removed from her.

“Yes,” she answered softly, sitting up, and I could see the worry etched on her face even in the darkness.

I sat up too, the blanket slipping and pooling around my waist. I searched for her hand in the darkness and interlocked our fingers when I found it, because I wanted to touch her at all times, to feel her warmth so my brain could calm and know this was happening and not just my creative imagination at work.

“I’m all ears, my love.”

She said nothing for a while, and just stared at our joined hands. When she finally spoke, her voice was thick, low.

“It’s about this. Us.”

My heart slammed against its cage, all manner of thoughts flying through my head, the next worse than the last. What if she wanted to say this was a mistake? That she was carried away by the moment and didn't mean those words? What if she deci–

“I…” She sighed, rubbing her face with her free hand, and I just sat, frozen, terrified of the next words that might come out of her mouth. “Are we dating, Jackson?”

I swallowed, stroking the back of her hand with my thumb. “If you want us to.”

She raised her eyes to mine, and they were so filled with worry that I wanted to kiss it all away, my fears forgotten.

“And what about what you want?”

“I want that too, my love. I want us to be together, but the label doesn't matter. What we call it doesn't matter. I just… I just want you, Siri. I don't care what we are as long as I have you.”

She stared at me with her bottom lip trembling, her eyes filling with tears as she asked, “And what about… our problem? About not being seen in public together when we go back home?”

And that made me falter. I looked away, down at my toes, my jaw clenched. I felt her small, warm hand on my jaw, turning my face back to look at her.

“It’s not fair,” she whispered. “And everything you said during our argument was right. The world wouldn't end if people saw us together, if they knew we were really close. I don't believe your life will fall apart because of that. I believe people will still try to stay on your good side.”

“So why, Siri?” I asked softly. “Why… hide?”

“Because I'm scared, Jackson,” she whispered so brokenly that my chest tightened. “I am scared with every fiber of my being. Michael, he…” She inhaled a shaky breath, and I fought to remain still as that damn name was mentioned again. “That bastard left a deep scar on me. And I promise I will tell you about it one day, but for now, I'm trying to put all of that behind me. For four years, I told myself that I was healed, and I’ve moved on, but that’s a fucking lie. I still freeze when I hear his name. A stupid part of me just… freezes in fear and panic.”

I turned to face her fully, cupping her face with both hands and placing a soft kiss on her forehead.

“There’s nothing stupid about that, Siri. Nothing stupid at all. I…” I swallowed. “The reason I have to have sex before every game is because of my father. It’s been seven years, and that still hasn't changed no matter how much I tell myself that it doesn't matter anymore. Seven years later and I'm still doing this.”

Her eyes were bright with interest now, chasing the panic away, but I wished it wasn't this topic that did.

“What happened?”

“He…” I looked down at her lap, my jaw clenched. “He scarred me as well, Siri. He made sure he imprinted himself on me before he left our lives. I had a game that night, and he–”

A shaky breath escaped me when I thought of the pain and panic of that rainy night. The horror of finally seeing my father for who he is. My mother’s scream still haunts me to this day.

“He tried–”

His cruel smile as he stared down at my broken body. The sick delight in his eyes and his words that burned themselves into my brain, words that to this day still echo in my mind, just like he wanted. Just like he knew they would.

“He–”

“Hey, hey,” Siri said softly, grabbing my face and dragging me out of that memory. When I looked back at her, my vision was blurry, and her eyes were bright with worry. “Hey, it’s okay. Come back to me.”

“I’m here,” I whispered with a shaky voice, grabbing her hands still on my face and squeezing them with hands that trembled. “I’m here, my love.”

“We’ll be fine, Jackson,” she said, trying to be strong even though her voice shook and tears filled her eyes. “One day… one day we’ll talk about these things like they’re nothing. One day we might even be able to joke about them. But for now… for now let’s just live in the moment and let the past stay in the past.” Her voice dropped, the first tear slipping down her cheek. “Even though the past seems to be bleeding into the present.”

And then she broke; she crumbled right before my eyes, and everything in me froze.

“I’m so scared, Jackson! I like you. I really like you so much, but what if you look at me differently when you know what happened? What if you’re disgusted by me when you know what I've done? How pathetic feelings made me? How desperate?"

“Shh, shh, shh,” I whispered as I dragged her into my arms, holding her so tightly as she trembled, as if I could keep her from falling apart. “Shh, baby. Don’t ever say something like that again. I’ve done my own fair share of shit in my life. Things I'm not proud of. Things that I might never be able to talk about. We’re humans, Siri. Bad shit is what we do, but it doesn't define us.”

I cupped her face so she could look into my eyes and see how true my words were. I wiped her tears, and she sniffled.

“I’ve looked into your eyes, Siri. I’ve gotten to know you, and I've seen that the past doesn't define you. I’ve seen how sweet and sharp you are. You are not whatever the past wants you to be.”

I leaned in and pressed a hard kiss on her lips, leaning my forehead on hers and whispering, “You’re my Siri.”

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Today's Joy. Tomorrow's Pain

Yeah, fuck Toria and her stupid advice. Fuck that happy ending nonsense. Sure, I do want a happy ending with him. I want a happy beginning, middle, and ending with Jackson. All of that and more! Damn it, I had even been thinking of the perfect future together with him. Yes—and fuck you—I’ve been thinking of going somewhere with him, getting a house, three dogs, and maybe one cat. We could live like that for a few years, then get married, and decide if we wanted kids. I'd already mapped out the perfect future, the perfect ending. So yeah… Use him? USE him? How on God’s green earth can I use him when I was in love with him? I was madly in love with that man, and it made me realize that I was never in love with Michael. No. No, I was just in love with the attention and the idea of love, the idea that someone finally wants me. But this painful shit with Jackson? This soul-crashing devastation? Yeah, this was love. This was love in its purest, fucked up form.So how was I going to us

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Stay And Use

“I thought you might be gone already,” Toria said as we settled into my hotel room. “Jackson already booked my flight,” I said, opening a beer. “I leave in two days.”“Hmm. So what are you going to do till then? Stay cranked up in here?”“Probably.”“I could show you around, you know.”I thought about it for a second and shook my head, sipping my drink. “Thank you, but no.”I had thought about leaving and just going to tour on my own, but every time I thought about the possibility that I might run into him out there, I shook off that thought. Maybe I would have seen him with his hand around another woman’s waist, laughing with the boys and acting like that night didn't happen. But seeing him on screen tonight, I don't think any of that might have happened. I wanted to ask Toria what happened and why he looked that way, but then I might sound like I care, which I very much do, and I wanted to stay cool and keep up this nonchalant act until I was out of here. And so I sipped my drink

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Play The Fool Again

SIRIHe… lost. I stared at the TV screen in my small hotel room, my eyes wide, hands squeezed together and pressed to my chest.“He lost,” I whispered it out loud like it would make sense if I did so. I told myself I wasn't going to watch the game, that I would stay away from my screen and just wait for my flight back home two days from now, but I couldn't. I couldn't let the chance of seeing him, even though it was from a screen, slip away. As soon as his team had skated onto the ice and the camera zoomed in on them, my eyes had found him immediately, and I knew something was wrong. His skin was too pale, his eyes looked too sunken, and he kept flexing his wrists over and over, to the point I was sure everyone in the arena must have noticed. And I could have sworn that he was trembling. The game started, and it was even worse. Everything about the way he moved, to the way he could no longer hide his trembling, was wrong. It filled my heart with dread and panic. I couldn't relax a

PRESENTThe smoke of that cigar, laced with a chocolate scent, burned into my nose even though he was across the street. The scent was the same: the cigar lit, resting on his lips, lifted in a smile. A small smile, soft and gentle. Not like that frightening smile he had on his face that night that still sends a chill down my spine. Elijah M’Call still looked the same even seven years later. His black hair was slicked back from his face, dotted with gray. His grey eyes were wrinkled at the corners from age. His shoulders were still broad beneath his tailored suit, and black leather gloves covered his hands. He still looked and dressed the same. Nothing had changed. After that night, I had cut every tie with this man. I made sure I never heard a word from him or received a single penny. I moved into Jacob’s house, and his mother accepted me without a single complaint, letting me stay until I could rent my own place. I didn't speak to my mother for two years after that. She came to my

Reader discretion is advised. ~.~“I can think of a few things that can make you quit hockey,” my father said, his voice relaxed, but his face was filled with hell. He stood chest to chest with me, and I fought every instinct screaming at me to lower my eyes, to pull back. I fought them and stood perfectly still, not letting that dark look intimidate me.“What?” I spat. “Are you going to pay the coach to kick me out of the team? Then I'll just find another team to join.”“Jackson, please,” my mother whispered, and that just made my fists clench harder. Why was she calling me back and not her husband? He was the one threatening to take my dream away from me! My hopes for a better future, and still I was the one being called back? Did she really think I would just roll over and accept this bullshit? Bloody no. “That is way beneath me, Jackson,” he said in a low voice, acting li

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Just A Little More

SEVEN YEARS AGOThe sun had long since set, and the neighborhood was dark by the time I strolled in through the back door, my shoes tied together by their laces and hanging around my neck, my hands shoved into my pockets. Hopefully my parents were asleep by now, and I wouldn't have to deal with either of them. It was exhausting to look into their eyes these days and act like everything was fine when I harbored a little bit of hatred for my father. Okay, maybe it was more than a little bit, but I won’t tell if you don’t. I spent time at Jacob’s house long after practice, then came home and lied through my teeth, saying the coach sucked us dry with practice, which is why I was so late. You can’t blame me. The atmosphere in this house was depressing, and hearing my father whistle while he smoked his cigar, acting like all was right and fair in the world, was pissing me off when I could see my mother was losing weight, when I could clearly see she was losing her shine. She just needed
