SIRI

Keep a straight face, Siri.

Do not waver.

Do not let this English, good-looking man, with huge biceps that even the large hoodie can’t hide, and with thick, strong thighs that his jeans highlighted, distract you. And with messy hair and those bedroom eyes, distract you.

Do not let your STEPBROTHER distract you.

Yap, and that did it.

“I’m at work, Jackson,” I said, making sure to push enough irritation into my voice to throw him off. “If you’re not going to order, then leave.”

He wasn't thrown off. He kept staring at me, leaning against the counter, and I could feel the eyes on us. Eyes that I wanted to avoid, the way I have always avoided eyes.

He straightened suddenly.

“An americano. Two shots.”

And just like that, his face was closed off.

I nodded. “Coming right up, sir.”

After his order was served, he took it, paid, and left without a single glance my way. Why did that… sting? Now, I was just being ridiculous. But I couldn't help but think about how he was going to get laid.

Who will she be? Maybe tall. Skinny, with a tight ass. Yeah, that was what men like him go for. I know it was a joke when he said those things to me. Men like him didn't look towards girls like me. And when they do? Run the other way.

Whoever that girl is going to be, I was fucking jealous of her.

~.~

I got home later than usual, and a single light was on. My heart sank before I even permitted it. I slowly made my way upstairs, hoping he wouldn't notice I was back, because I knew I was the reason that light was on, but who was I kidding? He always noticed.

“A word, Siri.” His voice came from the kitchen, cool and calm like it always is, and a cold sweat broke out on the back of my neck.

“Breathe, Siri,” I whispered as I made my way to him. “Breathe.”

He was standing by the counter, a mug in his hand. His eyes were cold and empty as they were fixed on me, nothing like the way they were when he was looking at Lillian. But of course I knew that look was fake, too. This man felt nothing for anyone but himself.

“You’re late today,” he said, sipping from the mug and looking at me from the rim.

“I had to pull a double shift.”

He said nothing, his eyes fixed on mine. I’ve come to know that this was a show of power, and every time I looked away first, I let him know he held power over me. I’ve learned how to hold his eyes.

He looked away first. “Lilian is beginning to ask questions.”

“About?”

“Your job at the café.”

Ah yes. I remembered Jackson had asked me the same thing.

So let me explain the picture to you. The image my father has set up was a doctor who was doing well for himself. I wonder why nobody has ever asked which hospital he was working at. Why has no one ever thought to see him at his workplace? Then they’ll know that everything about him was a lie.

It would affect me, I know. The way it affected me four years ago, but I will survive the way I always did.

So back to the picture. For a doctor who was well off, it would seem strange to anybody who looked that his daughter was working in the café.

“I see,” was all I said.

He raised an eyebrow. “That’s all you have to say?”

“Yes, Father. That’s all I have to say. I have a student loan I need to pay, bills that keep piling up and I don't even know where they come from, and I have a life. So yes, that’s all I have to say.”

Calm, Siri. Be calm. Be like him, stonefaced, and emotionless.

He hummed, raising the mug to his lips again. Was there even liquid in that cup?

“We’ll think of a solution to all that,” he said finally. “I can’t let you ruin this for you. Good night, Siri.”

My shaking hands clenched into fists, but I kept my face blank as I nodded. “Good night, Father.”

When I got to my room, I stood still at the center for a good five minutes, staring at nothing in particular.

Ruin this for him? Ruin what? His lie? His fake life? He was the one who ruined things for me! Four years ago, he made my life harder than it already was!

“Don’t cry,” I muttered, clenching my hands so tightly that my nails dug into my palms and pierced my skin. The pain woke me up. “You are no longer that little girl who cries because of him. You’re not her anymore.”

~.~

Jackson had a game the next day, and unfortunately, I had to be there because we were playing the perfect little family.

I scoffed. What bullshit.

“What’s funny, Siri?” Lilian asked with a bright smile, and I almost felt guilty.

“Nothing,” I said softly. “I just remembered a joke.”

The game was about to start, and the arena was alive with the screams and cheers of thousands of fans. I already had my earplugs in, but they did nothing to dull the noise, so I played music. The cheers faded, the screams dying down, and I just… breathed.

Finally, the game started. As soon as he skated into the rink, I knew it was him even though he was wearing a helmet. It wasn't the C on his jersey that gave away his position as captain, or the number seven printed boldly on it. It was just… him.

I don't know when I started being so aware of him when we’ve barely spent time together. He stood tall, rolling his shoulders, his stick tight in his grip. The world was quiet, and he was the only one I saw on the rink.

And then, almost as if he felt my eyes on him, he raised his head, and from across the arena, his eyes found mine.

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Play The Fool Again

SIRIHe… lost. I stared at the TV screen in my small hotel room, my eyes wide, hands squeezed together and pressed to my chest.“He lost,” I whispered it out loud like it would make sense if I did so. I told myself I wasn't going to watch the game, that I would stay away from my screen and just wait for my flight back home two days from now, but I couldn't. I couldn't let the chance of seeing him, even though it was from a screen, slip away. As soon as his team had skated onto the ice and the camera zoomed in on them, my eyes had found him immediately, and I knew something was wrong. His skin was too pale, his eyes looked too sunken, and he kept flexing his wrists over and over, to the point I was sure everyone in the arena must have noticed. And I could have sworn that he was trembling. The game started, and it was even worse. Everything about the way he moved, to the way he could no longer hide his trembling, was wrong. It filled my heart with dread and panic. I couldn't relax a

PRESENTThe smoke of that cigar, laced with a chocolate scent, burned into my nose even though he was across the street. The scent was the same: the cigar lit, resting on his lips, lifted in a smile. A small smile, soft and gentle. Not like that frightening smile he had on his face that night that still sends a chill down my spine. Elijah M’Call still looked the same even seven years later. His black hair was slicked back from his face, dotted with gray. His grey eyes were wrinkled at the corners from age. His shoulders were still broad beneath his tailored suit, and black leather gloves covered his hands. He still looked and dressed the same. Nothing had changed. After that night, I had cut every tie with this man. I made sure I never heard a word from him or received a single penny. I moved into Jacob’s house, and his mother accepted me without a single complaint, letting me stay until I could rent my own place. I didn't speak to my mother for two years after that. She came to my

CONTENT WARNING: This chapter contains references to domestic abuse and may be triggering to some readers. Reader discretion is advised. ~.~“I can think of a few things that can make you quit hockey,” my father said, his voice relaxed, but his face was filled with hell. He stood chest to chest with me, and I fought every instinct screaming at me to lower my eyes, to pull back. I fought them and stood perfectly still, not letting that dark look intimidate me.“What?” I spat. “Are you going to pay the coach to kick me out of the team? Then I'll just find another team to join.”“Jackson, please,” my mother whispered, and that just made my fists clench harder. Why was she calling me back and not her husband? He was the one threatening to take my dream away from me! My hopes for a better future, and still I was the one being called back? Did she really think I would just roll over and accept this bullshit? Bloody no. “That is way beneath me, Jackson,” he said in a low voice, acting li

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Just A Little More

SEVEN YEARS AGOThe sun had long since set, and the neighborhood was dark by the time I strolled in through the back door, my shoes tied together by their laces and hanging around my neck, my hands shoved into my pockets. Hopefully my parents were asleep by now, and I wouldn't have to deal with either of them. It was exhausting to look into their eyes these days and act like everything was fine when I harbored a little bit of hatred for my father. Okay, maybe it was more than a little bit, but I won’t tell if you don’t. I spent time at Jacob’s house long after practice, then came home and lied through my teeth, saying the coach sucked us dry with practice, which is why I was so late. You can’t blame me. The atmosphere in this house was depressing, and hearing my father whistle while he smoked his cigar, acting like all was right and fair in the world, was pissing me off when I could see my mother was losing weight, when I could clearly see she was losing her shine. She just needed

“You good, mate?” Jacob asked as he sat beside me and handed me a cup of hot chocolate. I took it without a word, cupping my hands around the mug and staring at the steam. He said nothing for a while, just drank his beverage, and then said, “The game is tomorrow, you know.”My shoulders stiffened. I heaved a sigh, sipping the hot drink, but I barely tasted anything. “Yeah,” I said, my voice scratchy from lack of use. “You haven't slept, haven't eaten anything. How are you going to play like this? Don’t expect us to go easy on you because you were our captain.” He said it as a joke, nudging my shoulder with his, but I remained silent, unmoving. He sighed deeply, placing his mug down and turning to face me. “Listen here, mate: it’s not your fault. It’s neither of your faults. You both have a shitty past, and she’s been hurt, yeah, but have you ever done anything to hurt her?” He didn't wait for an answer he wasn't going to get and just went on. “Sure, you were a fuckboy just three

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Hands Made Of Feathers

JACKSONI haven't moved for an hour or two. It might be three. I don’t bloody know. I sat on the bench by the bar, my eyes fixed on the glass of liquor in front of me. A glass I haven't touched since it was placed in front of me. Usually, I would have downed the drink just to try to numb these painful feelings in my chest. But no. No, I wanted to feel them all. I wanted them to burn. I wanted them to hurt. Jacob has been sitting beside me since the-however-long hours I've been here, but he hasn't said a word, just nursing his drink. I wish he would say something. I wish he would call me a bastard or a fool. Why? I didn’t know. I just needed something to hurt. I needed it to hurt even more. He suddenly shifted beside me, going tense. “What the bloody fuck do you want, Toria? Here to push the knife in deeper?”“Calm down, J. I just need to talk to him.”“Well, he doesn't want to talk to ya. Piss off.”“Did you love her?” she asked anyway, and Jacob was already shaking with anger, wh
