Chapter Fifty Five

Knox's POV

I park my car in the circular drive, the same spot I peeled out of last night when I defied every rule to get to Cassie.

The engine roars as it cools, the only sound in the early morning silence.

My fingers tighten around the steering wheel. Nyx screams at me to turn around and go back to Cassie. To make sure she's truly okay. But I can't. Not when Maya is still here, unsafe with my father who has made it clear what happens if I don't comply with coming here.

‘We should go back, Knox,’ Nyx growls again. ‘Our mate needs us. She will get mad for abandoning her.’

‘Maya needs us too,’ I mutter, finally forcing myself to let go of the wheel.

‘Maya can take care of herself. Our mate is—’

‘Human. Vulnerable. Which is exactly why I need to protect her by staying away.’ The words taste like bile on my tongue.

‘You confirmed last night that she's not human,’ Nyx protests stubbornly.

‘Then what's she?’ I snap and he goes quiet because even he couldn't tell what Cassie is.

    Knox's POV The words hit her like a slap. I see it in the way she flinches, in the way her amber eyes go wide with unshed tears. My heart aches seeing her this way.
