Chapter Seventy

last update Last Updated: 2025-10-28 23:12:58

Cassie's POV

Dread pools in my gut as my eyes lock with Emily, my cousin. She stands at the class door, her expression cold and judgemental just like three years ago. She looks exactly like my aunt, with the same sharp features and cruel eyes.

I rise to my feet and walk slowly towards her. “Emily?” My voice comes out shaky and barely above a whisper. “What are you doing here?”

“Your aunt is on campus.” She doesn't move from the door or even act like she's excited to see me. “She wants to see you. Now.”

My heart sinks to the pit of my stomach in an instant and my fingers tremble involuntarily. The class goes silent as if they are aware of what's happening and what's about to happen to me.

I can feel every eye on me now. I swallow hard, forcing myself to say something, like making up an excuse, because my aunt is the last person I want to see.

“I— I have another class,” I stutter. “Can—”

“Now, Cassie!” Emily's voice cuts through the air. “Unless you want her coming to find you you

Cassie's POVI wake up with a smile on my face. For a moment, I just lie on the bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying last night in my head. The rooftop, the city lights, Knox's hands in my hair, the way he looked at me like I was the only person in the world. It feels like a dream, like something that happened to someone else, not the boring, invisible Cassie Monroe. My phone buzzes on the nightstand. I grab it and my heart skips when I see Knox's name.“Good morning, beautiful. Been thinking about you since I dropped you off. When can I see you again?”The smile on my face widens. I type back quickly.“Good morning. I have classes until 3. After that?”His response is immediate.“I will pick you up later then.” I hug my phone to my chest like a lovesick teenager. This is real, last night actually happened and Knox Black wants to see me again. “Okay, what's with the goofy smile?”My heart practically jumps out of my chest, and I nearly drop my phone. Maya stands at the door, her a

Cassie's POV After dinner, Knox suggests we move to the lounge area. The couches are plush and comfortable, arranged to face the city view. We settle onto one of them, and Knox immediately pulls me closer until I'm tucked against his side.It should feel awkward. But somehow, it feels natural, like I belong here, in this moment, with him.“Comfortable?” He asks, his arm draped across my shoulders.“Very.” I lean into him, breathing in that pine scent that's becoming dangerously familiar. “This whole night has been... I don't even have words for it.”“Good words, I hope.”“The best words.” I tilt my head to look at him. “No one's ever done anything like this for me before, or made me feel special like this.”Except my parents of course. However, I can't tell him that because I'm not ready to share my story with him. Not when he's obviously keeping a lot from me.Something flashes in his eyes. “Then everyone else is an idiot.” His fingers trace lazy patterns on my arm. “You should feel

Cassie's POV “So you're really telling me who this mystery guy is?” Maya asks for the third time as I dig through my bag. I pull out a dress, consider it, then toss it on the bed. It looks too formal. “I told you, it's just someone from class.”“Huh-huh. Someone from class who has you trying on every outfit you own.” She's sprawled on the bed, watching me with amusement. “Come on, Cass. Just give me a name. Is he someone I know?” Suspicion drips in her tone. “No.” I grab another dress, simple, dark blue, not too fancy but not too casual. “What about this one?”“Perfect. Now tell me his name.”“Maya...”“Fine, fine.” She holds up her hands in surrender. “Keep his name, I just hope he doesn't turn out to be a creep.” Guilt gnaws at my heart. I hate that I'm lying and keeping this massive secret from my best friend. But how do I tell her I'm going on a date with her brother? “He's not a creep,” I say. “He's... actually really sweet.”Maya's expression softens. “You really like him,

Cassie’s POV Lizzy's heels fade into the distance, and I watch in confusion and surprise as her words echo in my head. How did she know Knox cancelled on me? How did she know we had plans to meet tonight? And what the hell did she whisper to Knox that made his face go pale and his entire body go rigid like he'd been struck? I should ask Knox, demand answers, get the truth about what's going on. However, he's standing right there, close enough that I can smell his intoxicating scent— pine and something wild that makes my head spin. I can see the conflict raging in his emerald green eyes. And suddenly, I don't want to ask questions anymore. I just want him. I want to be in his arms, to feel safe the way I did that night when everything was burning and he was the only one that made it better. “Cassie.” His voice is rough and strained. “I'm sorry. I'm so fucking sorry. I shouldn't have cancelled—”I don't let him finish. I close the distance between us in quick strides and kiss him,

Lizzy's POV Adrian's jaw tightens, but he doesn't deny it.“What did you give her?” I demand, my voice shaky as I step closer. “What the hell did you put in her drink?” I saw Cassie acting strange that night and I believed it was the effect of the drink. The next day I expected to hear of her death, but I didn't. That was when I knew Adrian didn't go through with the plan. “Heat suppressant mixed with a catalyst.” He meets my gaze without flinching. “I figured if she was Knox's mate, triggering her heat would force them together. Would make Knox claim her before your psychotic ass could kill her.”Rage explodes through me and my eyes widen in shock. Has Knox marked Cassie yet? “You sabotaged me! You helped her!”“I saved her life!” Adrian's voice rises to match mine. “And I'd do it again. Because unlike you, I'm not a fucking monster.”“You're a traitor to me,” I spit. He shakes his head. “The only thing I'm guilty of is being stupid enough to work with you in the first place.”
