“Go change he said” “We’ll wait he said” “Why the hell would I go back down there” I said slamming the door as I walked back into my room. Ugh. Natalia was beginning to irritate me. I took off my soaked dress and changed into a clean comfortable sweater and a pair of loose pajama shorts. I climbed into bed with a novel I found in the library in the mansion. I had every intention of pretending like what happened earlier didn’t happen. 30 minutes later I was already deep into the book I was reading and seemingly enjoying when the my bedroom door flung open. I didn’t even look up from the book. “You still don’t knock” I mumbled, turning to another page and laughed at something funny. “I told you to change and come back to the dining room” he said. His voice was calm but there was an edge to it. Like everyone must obey his command because he is a “mafia lord” I pretended not to hear him, the words on the page I was reading suddenly became very interesting. Just as I was about to read through a twist, the book disappeared from my hands. “What is wrong with you? Give me my book back” I yelled. “It’s my book and it’s my house and you’ll do what you’re told” he said, his voice raising. I rolled my eyes and scoffed at the audacity he had. I just genuinely wanted to the book back so I looked up at his dominating figure. And he looked down at me. His book “my book” by the way because I was the one reading it… if that made sense… was in his hand. His gray eyes fixed on mine. “Could you please give the book back?” I said batting my eyes. “You were ignoring me” he almost sounded hurt. “I wasn’t ignoring you. I just preferred the book more” I said in a sad whining voice. His jaw tightened. I could tell he didn’t like rejection. Or he hasn’t been rejected or disobeyed by anyone before. For several seconds neither of us said a word. We just stared at each other. The room was suddenly too small and he was standing too close to the bed… close enough to remember how it felt when he kissed me. Heat slowly crept up my neck. Great. I could tell my face had turned red… I was blushing. It was getting too intense and I knew I just had to break the silence or he would break me. “I don’t appreciate being humiliated” I said folding my hands. “Humiliated?” He asked, his expression changing. “Or disrespected” I said, still looking at him. “I handled it” he said. “You fired a maid, which is not the same as handling it” “Natalia…” “Is a grown woman” I interrupted. “I won’t sit at a table where I’m treated like I’m beneath everyone else” Technically I was beneath them especially if they think I’m just a tutor. He just remained silent so I continued. “Natalia knows exactly what she’s doing and she’s been doing it from the first time we met. She doesn’t like me? Fine, but...” I breathed to control myself so I wouldn’t blow this up for all of us. “I know I’m not from a wealthy family like you. I don’t know which forks to use like Anya and I don’t wear designer clothes like Natalia but that doesn’t give anyone the right to look down on me” “It doesn’t” He said suddenly. I blinked. He agreed with me? “It doesn’t?” I repeated. “No” He confirmed. No arguments, no “this is my house and you shall obey my commands?” “Then why didn’t you stop her sooner” I pushed. “I did” “After she had already insulted me” His jaw flexed. I wasn’t even that mad about it. I actually seemed to be enjoying talking to him. And he didn’t seem to be an a-hole like I thought he’d be. “She’s a grown woman Zayka and I can’t control everything she says” I let out a humorless laugh. Wait. “Why do you call me that?” “What?” “Don’t pretend like you don’t know what I’m talking about. Why do you call me Zayka” “It’s not your business” “If you’re calling me that, then it’s my business” He didn’t say anything to me again. He just looked at me like he was already tired of talking. “Fine.” “Fine what?” “It’s not your business” His jaw ticked. Good. That almost made me smile. “Make it clear to Natalia that what she’s doing is unacceptable and she shouldn’t be acting the way she does especially in front of her child” He didn’t argue. I knew he was fed up with her too but why not just tell her to leave or get an apartment for her. It couldn’t be because of Anya. Anya doesn’t seem to like Natalia very well either. So why was he keeping her in the mansion? I’d ask him but he’d just say “it’s not your business” or “it doesn’t concern you” “If she has a problem with me, she should say it to my face and stop acting like a bitch” “I’ll speak to her” he said, his eyes staying on mine. I nodded. Silence again. That was when I realized I’d just blurted all that to a mafia boss that could kill me at any moment. He finally stretched his hand forward, giving me the book back. I took it from him cautiously. “Anya would like to see you at breakfast tomorrow” he said. “We’ll see” i said and his lips twitched ever so slightly. He turned and walked towards the door. Just as his hand was just about to reach for the handle, I spoke again. “Oh and Viktor?” “What?” He sighed. “Tell Natalia something for me”’ I started and he glanced over his shoulder, “if she decides to keep playing dirty, two can play the game” His brows lifted and I gave him a sweet smile before opening the book and falling back to the bed. I heard my room door open and close and I let out a deep breath. I took a risk tonight but i would worry about that when I was done with the book.KATHY 3 days later we were back in the US. I was very glad to be back. Being attacked wasn't part of the vacation specifications and I didn't like that very much even though I had caught the rat. Viktor had killed him without even thinking twice. Would he do the same to me when he finds out who I really am? I had better start making escape plans just in case. The drive back to the mansion somehow felt heavenly. Three cars, Viktor and Romanov in one, Natalia and Anya in the other and I in the last car. It was peaceful. I looked at my arm which had healed enough that I no longer needed a bandage, though the scar was still there. I would have to wear long sleeve shirts to visit Nana. It would be hard to explained that my life was at risk at my employer's home. The car I was in finally came to a stop last. Anya and Natalia had already gone inside while I walked behind Viktor who was many steps away from me. The moment I stepped on the foyer, I saw Zuri. "Kathy" he gre
KATHY"Call the doctor."Viktor's voice was calm, but everyone moved immediately.Romanov gave a short nod before disappearing down the hallway.I looked down at my arm. The adrenaline had worn off, and the burning pain was becoming harder to ignore. Blood had soaked through my sleeve, staining my shirt.About 15 minutes later, the doctor arrived. He cleaned the wound, stitched the cut, and wrapped my forearm in a neat white bandage."It isn't deep," he said. "You'll be sore for a few days, but you'll be fine. I'll give you some painkillers"As soon as he finished, Viktor looked at me."Go get your things."I frowned."My things?""We're leaving."I stood up to leave but Anya wouldn't let go. So we both went into my room together and I packed my bags. I didn't leave anything behind. We also went to Anya's room and picked some of her clothes and stuffed toys inside her school bag and we both went downstairs.Viktor took one look at my bag and back at my face.I shrugged. There was no w
KATHYI knew something was wrong the moment Viktor said we were leaving the country. "A vacation" was what he called it. Although the few days I had been here had been beautiful so far, something just didn't feel right. I could feel it. I wish I could just know what was happening. But my best guess was that the Mafia was under attach. The security around Viktor had doubled since we'd arrived. Romanov was constantly on the phone. Guards rotated shifts more frequently than before, and Viktor himself rarely relaxed, no matter how calm he appeared.Which made it all the more reason to believe that they were having some kind of fight. Would running away for a week really protect us? That afternoon, I wandered through one of the quiet hallways, hoping to clear my head, because something just kept nagging at me.I heard voices through a half-open door."...I've told you before."It was Viktor's voice.I stopped involuntarily.I wasn't trying to eavesdrop or anything.I had every intent
VIKTOR I hadn't stopped thinking about yesterday. It was becoming a problem. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Katherine diving into the pool without a hint of hesitation. The moment she came back out of the water in her swim suit, I knew all hope were lost for me. I wanted her. Beautiful. Dangerously beautiful. I let out a quiet sigh and rubbed a hand over my face. I had meetings to think about. A war brewing back in New York. Shipments that needed rerouting. Enemies who wanted my head. Instead... I was thinking about Katherine. Pathetic. I left my room and walked down the hallway toward hers. Just as I was about to knock, I heard laughter. Not just laughter. Her laughter. "...Gabby, stop!" she giggled through the phone. "No, I'm serious!" She laughed again. "I am not blushing!" A smile threatened to form on my lips. It disappeared the moment I realized I was smiling because of a woman talking on the phone. Ridiculous. I knocked o
KATHYI had never been on a private plane before. The moment I stepped into Viktor’s private plane I immediately realized we lived in twice completely different worlds. The cabin looked more like a living room in a 5 star hotel than an airplane. The whole seats where made of black leather. And everything else looked just as expensive.I sat on one of the seats at the back, pretending like this was all normal to me but it wasn’t.Anya had no problem at all though. She bounced on the seat beside me like she had been doing that all her life, which I was sure she was.She looked at me smiling then she eagerly grabbed my hand and started showing me around while Viktor discussed something with Romanov near the front area.I watched them for all of two seconds before turning my attention back to Anya. I already knew something was wrong the moment he said we were going on vacation. I just didn't know what.Nana wasn’t happy about me leaving the country when I told her I wouldn’t be around for
KATHY"You're smiling."Gabby narrowed her eyes at me as we stepped out of the boutique, shopping bags hanging from both our wrists."I'm not""You've been smiling for the last five minutes.""I have not"She folded her arms."You're thinking about a certain grumpy Mr. Expensive.""I absolutely am not."She gave me a look that screamed liar.I chuckled lightly trying to get her to stop talking but before she could tease me again, I casually glanced at the reflection in a nearby shop window. There they were. Two men.One pretending to study a display of watches. The other scrolling through his phone.Neither of them was interested in shopping. They were interested in me, it was too easy to tell.I almost laughed."What?" Gabriella asked."Nothing."I kept walking."Just... don't look behind you."She immediately tried to look behind her.I grabbed her arm."I literally just told you not to."Her eyes widened."Someone's following us?""Two someones.""Oh my God.""Relax.""They could b
VIKTOR Most people bored me. Politicians. Business men. Criminals. They all bored me. They all wanted something. Money. Power. Revenge. The only difference was how honest they were about it. I was sitting in the bar exactly 11 minutes before she walked into the bar. She was trying not to lo
KATHYThe thing about going undercover to seduce information out of a Mafia lord when you're 24 hours post betrayal, heartbreak and working on just a birthday cake in your stomach with just 3 hours of sleep... It is not the best idea.I knew this. But I accepted the mission anyways. If I catch this
KATHY"Katherine, Katherine" Daniel called out to me while I was walking as fast as my legs could carry me.My hands were shaking and my heels were suddenly too loud that my feet felt numb. My chest hurt so badly that I couldn't breathe properly."Katherine, wait!" he said again. "It's not what you
KATHY"Forgive me, father, for I have sinned" I said, the words leaving my mouth for like the millionth time. And honestly, every time I said it I meant it a little differently and today it was about a man I shot last Tuesday. I didn't kill him...but still...The guilt every time I shot someone si
