Chapter 9

The next day, Evelyn wakes up to have breakfast with her husband. She comes out to see Michael in the dining table as usual.

“Good morning Michael, you are early as usual.” She says with a smile. 

“Good morning to you too.” He replies and signifies to the maid to bring out and set the food on the table.

The maids set the food and they both start to eat, after eating. Michael informs Evelyn that he was leaving.

“I am going to my father’s place today, I just thought that I should inform you.” Evelyn informs her husband. 

“Ok, just call me if you need anything.” Michael says and Evelyn nods in response. Michael leaves with his P.A.

Evelyn goes to her room, she decides to go to the Hawkins family house at noon, as she was going to take a shower, her phone rings. She picks it up yo see that it is her best friend, Kate calling. She picks up the call.

“Good morning, Katie.” Evelyn greets her friend.

“Good morning, my love. I thought I should call you since it seems like you have forgotten that you have a best friend that you used to call almost every day. Is your husband treating you that well that you forgot about your most loyal friend.” Kate says teasingly.

“I am so sorry, forgive me my Lord. Your servant was just too engrossed in the useless things that she committed the most grievous sin of all. I deserve to be punished my Lord.” Evelyn answers with an equal sense of humor and they both burst out laughing. 

“But seriously my friend, is your husband treating you that good that you forgot about me. What a pity.” Kate says seriously

“I am so sorry Kate, I have been busy and I honestly don’t want to disturb you. I mean, you are very busy with school work and I don’t want to be a source of distraction to you. Forgive me.” Evelyn begs her best friend.

“Well, you are my best friend. You cannot be a distraction to me, do you understand?” Kate says sternly.

“I understand.”

“So what have you been up to, how is married life treating you? I hope your husband is treating you well.” Kate asks her anxiously, worried about how her best friend is doing.

“I am fine Katie, my married life is good and my husband is treating me well also. I am fine.” Evelyn assures her.

“That is better. If your husband does anything bad to you, just tell me. I am going to get revenge for you.” Kate says with righteous indignation.

“Yes ma, I will make sure I tell you if my husband does anything bad to me.”

“Yes, I almost forgot. I hope that you have paid your admission fee and when are you resuming? I hope you are still planning to go to school.” Kate asks her

“Yes, I am definitely going to go to school. I forgot to pay the application fee, I am going to pay it once I drop the call. I can’t believe that I forgot.” Evelyn says grateful that her friend reminded her.

“Are you really enjoying your married life that much that you forgot. I am jealous.” Kate says jokingly and they both laugh.

“Yes, I almost forgot my brother arrived yesterday.” “Really? He came back yesterday? That is nice, send my regards to him.” Evelyn tells Kate.

“I told him that you got married, he was very surprised. I remember when you had a huge crush on him, I really thought you were going to get married to him.” Kate says making fun of her.

“Well thank you for your wishful thoughts, I hope you get a good sister in law because I don’t think I will be getting a divorce anytime soon.”

“Ohhhh, Mrs. Andrews. Well done. You must be really enjoying your husband.” Kate teases her and she just smiles.

“By the way, what of your family and your sister, have they found her?” 

“Well, I went to the house 2 weeks ago after getting married because I needed to take all my clothes, they could not really say anything because Michael followed me, when I asked about Ayla they said they have not yet seen her, but I think that is a lie because they were stuttering and I don’t think step mother can be that calm without her precious daughter.”

“Despicable people, I will not be surprised if they were the ones that sent their daughter away so that you can marry the man instead. They are really wicked.” Kate says angrily

“I am also considering that option but honestly I prefer it here. They can behave as they like. My father even called me today to come home and that he wants to see me. I don’t know what he wants but I have to go.” Evelyn informs her

“Well, just make sure that you don’t allow them to anything to you. I am sure that they want to ask for something from you. Be safe, Ok?” Kate says worried.

“Ok, I am going to be fine. It is not like they can do anything to me. I will be fine.” She assures her friend.

“We should go out before you become too busy preparing for resumption, we should meet at our usual sometime next week, is that fine? I hope your husband will agree.”

“Yes, let us meet. He will agree, just tell me when you are free.”

“Ok, no problem. Goodbye. I will be expecting your calls.” Kate bids her goodbye.

“Bye, talk to you later.” Evelyn says and hangs up the call. She drops her phone and goes to take a shower.

She decides to go to her Father’s house immediately, instead of waiting till noon. So she dresses up, takes her bag and went out. A driver approaches her that he has been given instructions to take her to anywhere she might want to go, so Evelyn tells him the address of the house and enters the car. The ride was smooth and soon she gets to the Hawkins residence. She tells the driver to hold on and that she will not take too much time.

She enters the house and as usual, all of the maids just looked at her continue doing their work like she was air, she shakes her and just enters the living room to see her step mother with a designer and she was picking out the clothes she wanted to get. She knows that it was her mother’s money they were spending extravagantly, while she as the biological daughter gets waste and crumbs.

“Good morning Step mother. Where is my Father?” Evelyn greets the woman who just looks at her and eyes her for disturbing her, and then she puts on a very fake smile.

“Your father is in study; you can go and meet him there.” She says and then continues picking the clothes. Evelyn climbs the stairs and goes to her father’s study, she gets to the door of the study and knocks on it. Even from a very young age, she had to knock before going to meet her father while her younger step sister is free to enter anyhow.

She hears her father’s gruff voice, “Who is there?” She shouts back, “It is Evelyn” “Come in” She hears him say and she enters the study closing the door behind her.

“Good morning Father, you said you wanted to see me.” She says as soon as she enters the study.

“Good morning, my daughter. Yes, I said I want to see you.” He says with a smile that looks real but she knows that it is a fake smile. She raises her eyebrow when she heard the endearment her father called her. He had never called her like that before even when she had good grades or even won scholarships, she did not pay much attention and smiles back at him.

“Is everything alright Father? Is the company fine?” She asks with feigned worry.

“Well, everything is a little bit fine. I just want you to convince your husband that he should forgive us and that he should not target our company. I know that he must not be that angry with you. So please beg him and convince him.” Mr. Hawkins says

“Ok Father, I will make sure that I convince him not to take action against our company.” Evelyn says with fake enthusiasm while Mr. Hawkins nods his head that he still had control over her.

“Also, you should convince him to collaborate and invest into the company. We are his in laws after all.” Mr. Hawkins says smugly

“Yes father, I will do as you say.” She says obediently

Mr. Hawkins nods his head and signifies that she can leave.

“By the way Father, have you found Ayla? Do you know where she is?” She says innocently.

“Of…. Of course no, we are still looking for her. I don’t know where she hid herself but when I find out I will make sure I teach her a lesson.” He says with fake anger.

“I just hope that we find her. I mean she must be all alone out there. I just hope that she comes back home.” Evelyn says with feigned sympathy

“Well, I will be leaving now. Goodbye Father.” She says while her father just waves his hand while being engrossed in his work. She leaves without greeting her step mother and enters the car straight.

As soon as she enters the car, her temperament suddenly changes and a glint of ruthlessness flash through her eyes. She tells the driver to start driving.
