CALISTA

“We are here.” Maco's voice jolted me out of my daze, and I glanced briefly at him before turning to look outside.

“Oh my.” My lips parted slightly at the sight ahead of me. A few steps away from the parking lot stood a towering skyscraper building, rotating slowly, with the words "Sparta Tech" imprinted at the top.

I didn't expect it to be this magnificent in real life. I felt a hard gaze on me, and I turned my head to look at Maco, seeing the coldness in his eyes. But when he caught me looking, a warm smile spread on his face, the coldness disappearing instantly.

Umm… What was that?

“Uh, thank you for the ride.” I forced a smile as I grabbed the car door handle and opened the door. He didn't answer, and I took that as a cue to escape from there.

I shut the door and turned to the building, my files pressed tightly against my chest with my left hand.

“Let's do this. Fighting!” I nodded firmly in determination and began walking towards the building. My heels barely balanced as I walked, and that frustrated me.

After much difficulty, I made it to the interview waiting room. I glanced down at the number badge on my blouse and sighed softly.

I hope this goes well.

Right then, I heard whispers around me, and I bit my lip. They started whispering immediately as I walked into the room, and I knew very well they were talking about me.

“Hey.” A soft voice sounded beside me and I turned to the person. A red-haired girl, probably in her late twenties, smiled at me, and my eyes fell on her badge which said “No 43”.

“Hi.” I smiled.

“Oh? I didn't expect you to answer back.” She exclaimed, her hand covering her mouth, but when she noticed the stares from others, she whispered, " Sorry, " to them and faced me again. “I'm sorry.”

“It's okay.” I bit back the urge to laugh. Here I was thinking I was the nervous one in situations. Looks like I have found someone much worse than me. “I'm Calista.”

“I'm Katrina, Kat for short.” Her cheeks flushed and she looked away while talking. I nodded along, then her next words came out. “You're gorgeous. I just wanted to tell you that.”

“Thank you, Kat.” I glanced at her. “You're not looking so bad either.”

Her head snapped towards me, her eyes widening in shock. “You think so?”

I blinked rapidly in surprise while nodding. “Yeah.”

Her eyes sparkled, her hands clasped in front of her chest. “Aw, you're not only gorgeous but kind too.”

I was startled by her behavior. However, before I could speak, the door to the interview room opened and our heads turned in that direction. A woman dressed in black formal pants and a white long-sleeve shirt, with round glasses on her oval face, stared at us.

“Next!”

I flinched at the loudness of her voice. At that moment, Katrina jolted off the chair as though her seat was on fire.

I glanced up at her as she grabbed her files chaotically and began walking to the room, but one of her certificates fell on the floor and she bent down to pick it up.

A snicker sounded in my ears and I turned in that direction to see some girls holding back their laughter, their eyes filled with mockery.

“Sorry, I'm sorry.” Kat's soft apologies filled my ears, and when I looked again, she had already rushed into the interview room.

The woman swept her gaze around us before following Kat and closing the door. Silence settled after she left, and one by one the girls started talking.

“I can't believe someone like that came for the interview. She should have stayed at home instead of coming here for a performance,” one of the girls whispered to her seat partner.

I sat there with a neutral expression on my face as they gossiped among themselves.

I felt a buzz in my bag, so I opened it and took out my phone. My thumb swiped the screen and clicked on the red icon in the message app.

My brows pressed tightly together when I saw who the sender was.

[Are you at home?]

Sender: Sera

I locked the screen instantly, glanced briefly at the remaining candidates, and stood up, walking out of the room. I looked around and walked up to the nearest person to ask for the ladies' room.

“Turn to your right and enter the last room at the end of the hallway,” the person answered.

I said thank you and hurried to the ladies' room.

I shut the door behind me and walked to the counter, dropping my bag and files, then turned on the tap. I placed my hands under the water and glanced at the mirror, my reflection staring back at me.

No matter how much I run away from her, there will come a day when we still have to talk about what happened.

I turned off the tap and cleaned my hands, but just as I turned, a sharp pain shot up from my leg and I grabbed the counter, feeling prickles on my skin.

I lifted my left leg and looked down, only to see a cut at the back of my leg, and the same cut on my right leg.

“Ugh, as if my day hasn't been shitty enough.” I hissed sharply and grabbed my bag, searching for a Band-Aid, but there was nothing. “Fuck.”

I snatched my bag and walked out of the room, biting my tongue to stop myself from crying out in pain, but just as I stepped out of the bathroom, I bumped into someone.

Quickly, a hand wrapped around my waist and pulled me forward until my feet regained balance.

“Are you okay?” a male's deep voice sounded in my ears, followed by a familiar perfume, and my eyes widened slightly as my heart began beating heavily against my chest.

Mark?

I lifted my head instantly to look at the person, but when I saw his face, the shock slowly disappeared.

CALISTA“So… are we going to do the introduction?” I asked, twirling my pen. Katrina's head lifted from the book she was reading to look at me; her brows lifted slightly.“We already did that.” Someone cut in before she could reply. I faced them. “My name is Marcus, and he is Lucas, my best friend. We are already on this program together.”“Oh, I'm—” I extended my hand for a handshake, but a female appeared before me, taking my hand.“Calista.”My brows shot up. How does she know my name?“Um… you are?”“I'm Fara,” she smiled at me.“Oh.” My mind spun in circles as I wondered if I had heard that name before, but nothing came to mind. “It's nice to meet you, Fara.”“Same. Don't be too puzzled. I learned your name from Mrs. Parker's lips and your ID hanging around your neck.” She pointed at my chest, and I lowered my head to see that indeed it was.Oh, lord. I'm not used to this.We settled around a table at the far end of the company's cafeteria, discussing how our day went. Fara seems

Enjoy spending some dollars on your car door.” I stared at the expression on his face in satisfaction before marching toward the company.I hurriedly climbed the short stairs before making it inside the entrance. My gaze swept around the people walking about, each one of them having their ID card hanging around their neck.I walked past the receptionist and got inside the elevator along with ma

CALISTA“Which hospital is she in?” The words slipped out of my mouth the minute I got down the stairs. My eyes went to Mikhail, who was going through something on his phone, and in his left hand was a newspaper. He looked up from the phone, his eyes settling on me before moving behind me. I didn't need to turn to see what he was looking at.“You're awake.” He ignored my question, setting down his phone and the newspaper on the table. “I thought Eren said her body needs more rest?” His brows shot up as he glanced past me to Eleanor.“Yes, but for now… let her do the minimal things.” She answered, walking past me to the table.Mikhail's eyes moved from her and landed on me, and for some reason, I felt the scolding in his eyes.“What?” I snarled at him, my fists clenched beside me, and I wanted to punch him.He sighed softly, rubbing his face. “Now that she's awake, Eleanor, what next?”Eleanor didn't answer immediately, her eyes on something in the newspaper. She dragged it to herself,

CALISTA“M-Mihail?” My teeth clattered as I stared at the body far away from us. “Y-you hit her. She's not moving!”“H-hey, hey.” He ran over to me as my legs gave way beneath me. He caught me before I could hit the floor and covered my eyes with his hand, pressing my head to his chest. “S-she's not dead.”My body shook violently as coldness seeped into me. H-he hit her.Is she dead?Dread crawled through me at the thought of witnessing a murder scene. Why would he do that?“Let me go.” I lifted my hand to push him away, but it fell to the floor. I struggled to lift it again, but it fell limp beside me.Mikhail hugged me tightly, his heart beating heavily against my ear. “It's okay.” His muffled voice followed. My teeth sank into my flesh, and just as I was about to speak, a voice echoed from the parking lot.“Calista…huh? What happened here?” Footsteps approached us, and I didn't know where the strength came from, because one minute I was wrapped in Mikhail's embrace and the next, I

CALISTA“Here is your order.” Kat placed the wine on the table. “Call me if you need anything. I'll be over there.” She glanced briefly at both of us before leaving, returning to her original spot.I stared at the table we were sitting at, at the far end of the bar, and sighed softly, pressing my forehead. I had completely forgotten the reason I was here.“Is she someone new?” Sera asked, pushing one of the glasses toward herself.“Yeah,” I answered, but didn't say anything after that.Nodding, Sera mouthed an “oh” before bending down to sip her wine, and her eyes widened slightly.I expected her to say something about the wine, but she didn't. Instead, she removed the straw from the glass, dropped it on the table, and gulped the contents of the glass in one go.“The hell?” My brows shot up, but I said nothing. She cleaned her mouth with her arm and turned to where Katrina was writing down an order.“Another one!” she yelled, and Kat's head lifted from what she was doing to face us. S

CALISTA“Cal.” Sera's voice trembled from the speaker. “I never knew he was the man you kept telling me about. If I had known he was your stepfather… I would have created a distance between us.”“You never sent a picture of how he looked. All you've talked about is your hatred towards him and how you never wanted to be in his life.” She let out a shaky breath and continued. “I will never do something that will destroy the precious bond we have together. So… please, I beg you to forgive me.”If it were other times, I would have done so.I stared at the phone on the dressing table in silence. After a while, I turned and walked to the wardrobe. Opening the doors, my eyes skimmed through the dresses, and I picked one, walking over to the bed and throwing it there.“Let's meet tonight,” I said, walking to the dressing table and pulling one of the drawers. Inside was a key. I grabbed it and closed the drawer. “This isn't something we can talk about over the phone.”“O-okay, where is the pla
