CALISTA

“So… are we going to do the introduction?” I asked, twirling my pen. Katrina's head lifted from the book she was reading to look at me; her brows lifted slightly.

“We already did that.” Someone cut in before she could reply. I faced them. “My name is Marcus, and he is Lucas, my best friend. We are already on this program together.”

“Oh, I'm—” I extended my hand for a handshake, but a female appeared before me, taking my hand.

“Calista.”

My brows shot up. How does she know my name?

“Um… you are?”

“I'm Fara,” she smiled at me.

“Oh.” My mind spun in circles as I wondered if I had heard that name before, but nothing came to mind. “It's nice to meet you, Fara.”

“Same. Don't be too puzzled. I learned your name from Mrs. Parker's lips and your ID hanging around your neck.” She pointed at my chest, and I lowered my head to see that indeed it was.

Oh, lord. I'm not used to this.

We settled around a table at the far end of the company's cafeteria, discussing how our day went. Fara seems to be the quiet type, but whenever someone asks her something, the quietness disappears into chattiness.

She's something.

Katrina, on the other hand, was avoiding me. I knew why she was doing that, but instead of confronting her about it, it's best to leave her alone.

If I were in her shoes, I would do the same. Imagine witnessing an attempted murder only to find out the culprit is the girl you complimented before.

I would freak out!

I drew on the straw, but only air entered my mouth. Looking down, I realized the can was empty, and when I checked the time, lunch break was over.

I got on my feet and walked to the bin. I had just taken some steps when I accidentally bumped into someone. No, more like they bumped into me.

My heels twisted painfully, and I crashed on the floor, hitting the trash bin and spilling its contents.

“The hell? Watch where you're going!” A female's high-pitched voice pierced my ears, and I sighed heavily.

I knew damn well what was about to happen, and I wasn't ready to be the entertainer. I got on my feet, dusting off the dirt on my shirt.

My eyes moved to the speaker, and I was a little stunned to see who it was. Her brown hair fell in waves down to her waist, her siren eyes glaring at me. My eyes fell to her exposed chest, and I saw her big breasts through the loose buttons.

From behind her, male eyes practically ate her up, and that irked me. If she's allowed to dress this way at work, she must be in a high position.

The last thing I would want right now is to bring trouble to myself.

“My apologies, I didn't see you coming in my direction.” I smiled politely, my hands pressed together in front of me.

“Are you visually short-sighted? How is it possible you didn't see me? You know what… I'm going to call your supervisor and have this dealt with.” She turned sharply, walking out of the cafeteria.

“Geez, Daisy already got hold of her new target among this year's interns.” Someone commented, and I faced him.

“What do you mean?” I walked toward him, my brows furrowed tightly.

“Um…” his eyes darted around before he finally looked at me. “What I am saying is that you're being tested. Although you all passed the interview and got the position as interns, you're still being tested until you finally get a permanent job in this company. My advice is for you to go after her right now.”

Fuck!

I threw the empty can into the trash bin that the cleaner had picked up and ran out of the cafeteria.

Why always me?!

Why always me, damn it!

I searched around for her, but she was nowhere to be found. My eyes went to the elevator, but it didn't indicate anyone had gone inside.

I took a sharp turn, and immediately I saw her. My feet slowed down.

She was standing in front of a tall man, and they seemed to be in a conversation.

She rubbed her arm, her right leg playfully kicking the floor. She giggled softly and nodded.

The heck?

The man's head lifted slightly, and I fully saw his face.

It was the bandage man… but different.

Was it the wet strands of hair blocking his face or the piercing earrings? He looked more handsome than before and… damn hot.

As if noticing my presence, his eyes moved to me, and he smiled, his mouth still moving. He leaned closer to Daisy, whispering something to her while maintaining eye contact with me.

My brows furrowed slightly, and I wondered if that was something I needed to see.

It seems I'll have to come back later.

I turned around and left the place, heading to my workspace. Lunch was over three minutes ago.

“Were you able to stop her?” Marcus whispered fiercely.

“No, but someone else did,” I grunted, sitting on the chair. I turned my head to Mrs. Parker's office and saw she wasn't there.

“Where did she go?” I nudged Katrina. She stiffened slightly before looking away from the laptop.

“I heard the CEO requested her in his office. I don't know when she will be back,” she answered.

I nodded slowly, then returned my focus to work.

All through the day, Katrina distanced herself from me, and finally, it was time to bid each other goodnight.

“Ow, my back!” Lucas yawned, stretching his body as we walked out of the building. I checked my wristwatch and saw it was past 8 PM.

Where the hell is he?

“Aren't you guys joining us at the team dinner?” Fara asked.

“A team dinner? We weren't informed about it,” Marcus commented.

“You guys didn't check your email? Come on, always check it.” Fara slapped her forehead.

I didn't need to check it though. Their expressions said it all.

“The one hosting it is Mrs. Parker! We can't miss this! Um… do you have a car? Which one of you has a car?” Lucas panicked.

“I do.” Katrina finally joined us in the conversation.

“Okay! Let's go!!!”

They hurriedly ran to the parking lot, leaving me behind.

I took out my phone and dialed Mikhail's number.

“The number you're trying to call doesn't exist…”

Huh?

CALISTA“Which hospital is she in?” The words slipped out of my mouth the minute I got down the stairs. My eyes went to Mikhail, who was going through something on his phone, and in his left hand was a newspaper. He looked up from the phone, his eyes settling on me before moving behind me. I didn't need to turn to see what he was looking at.“You're awake.” He ignored my question, setting down his phone and the newspaper on the table. “I thought Eren said her body needs more rest?” His brows shot up as he glanced past me to Eleanor.“Yes, but for now… let her do the minimal things.” She answered, walking past me to the table.Mikhail's eyes moved from her and landed on me, and for some reason, I felt the scolding in his eyes.“What?” I snarled at him, my fists clenched beside me, and I wanted to punch him.He sighed softly, rubbing his face. “Now that she's awake, Eleanor, what next?”Eleanor didn't answer immediately, her eyes on something in the newspaper. She dragged it to herself,

CALISTA“M-Mihail?” My teeth clattered as I stared at the body far away from us. “Y-you hit her. She's not moving!”“H-hey, hey.” He ran over to me as my legs gave way beneath me. He caught me before I could hit the floor and covered my eyes with his hand, pressing my head to his chest. “S-she's not dead.”My body shook violently as coldness seeped into me. H-he hit her.Is she dead?Dread crawled through me at the thought of witnessing a murder scene. Why would he do that?“Let me go.” I lifted my hand to push him away, but it fell to the floor. I struggled to lift it again, but it fell limp beside me.Mikhail hugged me tightly, his heart beating heavily against my ear. “It's okay.” His muffled voice followed. My teeth sank into my flesh, and just as I was about to speak, a voice echoed from the parking lot.“Calista…huh? What happened here?” Footsteps approached us, and I didn't know where the strength came from, because one minute I was wrapped in Mikhail's embrace and the next, I

CALISTA“Here is your order.” Kat placed the wine on the table. “Call me if you need anything. I'll be over there.” She glanced briefly at both of us before leaving, returning to her original spot.I stared at the table we were sitting at, at the far end of the bar, and sighed softly, pressing my forehead. I had completely forgotten the reason I was here.“Is she someone new?” Sera asked, pushing one of the glasses toward herself.“Yeah,” I answered, but didn't say anything after that.Nodding, Sera mouthed an “oh” before bending down to sip her wine, and her eyes widened slightly.I expected her to say something about the wine, but she didn't. Instead, she removed the straw from the glass, dropped it on the table, and gulped the contents of the glass in one go.“The hell?” My brows shot up, but I said nothing. She cleaned her mouth with her arm and turned to where Katrina was writing down an order.“Another one!” she yelled, and Kat's head lifted from what she was doing to face us. S

CALISTA“Cal.” Sera's voice trembled from the speaker. “I never knew he was the man you kept telling me about. If I had known he was your stepfather… I would have created a distance between us.”“You never sent a picture of how he looked. All you've talked about is your hatred towards him and how you never wanted to be in his life.” She let out a shaky breath and continued. “I will never do something that will destroy the precious bond we have together. So… please, I beg you to forgive me.”If it were other times, I would have done so.I stared at the phone on the dressing table in silence. After a while, I turned and walked to the wardrobe. Opening the doors, my eyes skimmed through the dresses, and I picked one, walking over to the bed and throwing it there.“Let's meet tonight,” I said, walking to the dressing table and pulling one of the drawers. Inside was a key. I grabbed it and closed the drawer. “This isn't something we can talk about over the phone.”“O-okay, where is the pla
