MIKHAIL'S POV

She’s gone.

I stared at the door in silence before turning my head to where Mother’s portrait was. I glanced down at the camera remains, then lifted my phone and swiped the screen.

My thumb hovered over the app which was frozen, and I clicked on it. The app icon showed the feed loading, and soon blank live feeds appeared on my phone. I clicked on the replay feed, and soon a video of me squatting in front of the camera appeared.

I glanced at the portrait just as the version of me in the video removed the camera and broke it. My eyes narrowed slightly as I glanced at the door.

How did she notice so quickly that there was a camera there?

“Looks like she’s not as foolish as I thought.” I swiped out of the feed and pressed the LIVE section, and multiple live feeds appeared.

One showed Eleanor sitting in front of the makeup table blow-drying her hair in her nightdress. Another showed Calista standing in her room with her phone in her hand.

“Fuck.” Her voice sounded from the speaker and she threw her phone on the bed, her hands gripped her hair as she turned around. I walked over and sat on my bed, watching the frustration on her face.

“Why now of all times?” She grabbed the hem of her shirt and pulled it over her head without hesitation, throwing it on the floor. She removed her skirt and kicked it away.

All that was left on her body was a pair of boxers and a singlet.

She reached into her wardrobe and grabbed a big T-shirt, then turned around and collapsed on her bed.

“She’s something,” a chuckle left my lips, and at that moment my phone buzzed and an ID flashed at the top of the screen. I clicked on it and placed the phone to my ear.

“Boss, we found them,” said Maco Deluca, one of my right-hand men.

“Send me the address.” I glanced at the window, and at the same time, my phone dinged. I brought my hand down and swiped the screen. A map ping was there. “Good. Do it, and send their remains to their leader.”

“Understood.” He answered, and the call ended.

I turned my head to the window and got up, walking over to it. I yanked the curtains aside and noticed the men on patrol.

CALISTA

“Mikhail! It’s almost 7:30! I can’t be late!” I yelled, putting on my lip gloss. I grabbed the comb and packed my hair into a sleek half-up, half-down ponytail, the crown smoothed back into a high tie while the remaining length fell in glossy waves down my back.

I glanced at the mirror and at my outfit, wondering if it was too much. I wore a cream sleeveless chiffon blouse tucked into a fitted black pencil skirt, paired with a tailored black blazer.

On my feet were black closed-toe pumps, and I carried a structured beige handbag, which Eleanor forced me to carry with me.

“It’s just an interview, there’s no need to dress this way,” I groaned, putting on simple pearl earrings and a delicate pendant. I twirled a little and blew a kiss to the mirror, my left leg bent up.

I grabbed my files. “Time to go,” I said and walked out of my bedroom.

Clanking sounds came from the kitchen as I hurried down the stairs, and from afar, I saw Eleanor cooking. I sniffed the air and my mouth watered instantly.

“What are we having for breakfast?” I walked over to her, and she turned at the sound of my voice.

“You’re done.” She smiled, cleaning her hands with a towel before placing the towel on the table. She walked towards me and adjusted my blouse while saying, “I made your favorite eggs Benedict and truffle-infused avocado toast. It is my way of wishing you luck on your interview, child.”

She tapped my shoulder lightly before turning back to the pan. I stood there in silence watching her wipe her forehead, and I clenched my hands tightly.

“I’m sorry about last night,” I whispered, looking away. “It was wrong of me to yell at you… in front of him too.”

She didn’t stop stirring. “It’s in the past, Cali. I know you didn’t mean it. I am also sorry for ruining your plans with my decision without discussing it with you first.” She finally paused and turned halfway to me. “I promise it will never happen again. Now go sit your ass at the table while I serve breakfast.”

I nodded, a smile spreading on my face, but I turned before she could see it.

A few minutes later, she served the dishes and smiled at me before going upstairs.

Mikhail decided to join us later, but when I saw him, a frown formed on my face.

“Are you just waking up?” I asked.

Mikhail glanced briefly at the dining table before walking to the coffee machine.

“Hello oh?”

“I can hear you.” He grabbed the mug and placed it under the machine. “My assistant will drive you to work… I’ll be back before you’re done with the interview.”

“And you didn’t think to discuss it with me?” I clench my spoon, my eyes fixed on him.

Mikhail didn’t reply and instead grabbed the mug and lifted it to his lips.

I stared at his back for a few seconds before turning to my food, and suddenly I lost my appetite. I set down my spoon, grabbed my files and bag, and got up, pulling the chair back.

I walked past him to the door, ignoring his gaze — that is, if he was even looking.

The door opened before I could reach for it and I saw a handsome man standing in front.

“Hi,” he smiled, and oh Lord, his smile was charming 'cause the anger inside me somehow disappeared.

“Hi,” I returned the smile.

“I’m Maco Deluca, your temporary driver.” His eyes went to my hands and then back to me. “May I help you with it?”

I glanced down at my hand and saw what he was referring to.

“Uh, yes-” before I could finish, Mikhail's annoying voice sounded behind me.

“No.”

I frowned and turned to Mikhail, my brows shooting up. His left hand was inside his pocket, and his right hand held the mug as he stared at me lazily.

“She has hands to carry those little things. You’re to drive her and then return,” he said, lifting the mug to his mouth, “with your mouth shut.”

“Sorry? I didn’t hear that?” I stepped towards him, but Maco urging us to leave stopped me from continuing.

After giving Mikhail a hard glare, I followed Maco, and soon we were out of the compound.

As we took a U-turn, I caught sight of a familiar car driving into the compound from the corner of my eye.

CALISTA“So… are we going to do the introduction?” I asked, twirling my pen. Katrina's head lifted from the book she was reading to look at me; her brows lifted slightly.“We already did that.” Someone cut in before she could reply. I faced them. “My name is Marcus, and he is Lucas, my best friend. We are already on this program together.”“Oh, I'm—” I extended my hand for a handshake, but a female appeared before me, taking my hand.“Calista.”My brows shot up. How does she know my name?“Um… you are?”“I'm Fara,” she smiled at me.“Oh.” My mind spun in circles as I wondered if I had heard that name before, but nothing came to mind. “It's nice to meet you, Fara.”“Same. Don't be too puzzled. I learned your name from Mrs. Parker's lips and your ID hanging around your neck.” She pointed at my chest, and I lowered my head to see that indeed it was.Oh, lord. I'm not used to this.We settled around a table at the far end of the company's cafeteria, discussing how our day went. Fara seems

Enjoy spending some dollars on your car door.” I stared at the expression on his face in satisfaction before marching toward the company.I hurriedly climbed the short stairs before making it inside the entrance. My gaze swept around the people walking about, each one of them having their ID card hanging around their neck.I walked past the receptionist and got inside the elevator along with ma

CALISTA“Which hospital is she in?” The words slipped out of my mouth the minute I got down the stairs. My eyes went to Mikhail, who was going through something on his phone, and in his left hand was a newspaper. He looked up from the phone, his eyes settling on me before moving behind me. I didn't need to turn to see what he was looking at.“You're awake.” He ignored my question, setting down his phone and the newspaper on the table. “I thought Eren said her body needs more rest?” His brows shot up as he glanced past me to Eleanor.“Yes, but for now… let her do the minimal things.” She answered, walking past me to the table.Mikhail's eyes moved from her and landed on me, and for some reason, I felt the scolding in his eyes.“What?” I snarled at him, my fists clenched beside me, and I wanted to punch him.He sighed softly, rubbing his face. “Now that she's awake, Eleanor, what next?”Eleanor didn't answer immediately, her eyes on something in the newspaper. She dragged it to herself,

CALISTA“M-Mihail?” My teeth clattered as I stared at the body far away from us. “Y-you hit her. She's not moving!”“H-hey, hey.” He ran over to me as my legs gave way beneath me. He caught me before I could hit the floor and covered my eyes with his hand, pressing my head to his chest. “S-she's not dead.”My body shook violently as coldness seeped into me. H-he hit her.Is she dead?Dread crawled through me at the thought of witnessing a murder scene. Why would he do that?“Let me go.” I lifted my hand to push him away, but it fell to the floor. I struggled to lift it again, but it fell limp beside me.Mikhail hugged me tightly, his heart beating heavily against my ear. “It's okay.” His muffled voice followed. My teeth sank into my flesh, and just as I was about to speak, a voice echoed from the parking lot.“Calista…huh? What happened here?” Footsteps approached us, and I didn't know where the strength came from, because one minute I was wrapped in Mikhail's embrace and the next, I

CALISTA“Here is your order.” Kat placed the wine on the table. “Call me if you need anything. I'll be over there.” She glanced briefly at both of us before leaving, returning to her original spot.I stared at the table we were sitting at, at the far end of the bar, and sighed softly, pressing my forehead. I had completely forgotten the reason I was here.“Is she someone new?” Sera asked, pushing one of the glasses toward herself.“Yeah,” I answered, but didn't say anything after that.Nodding, Sera mouthed an “oh” before bending down to sip her wine, and her eyes widened slightly.I expected her to say something about the wine, but she didn't. Instead, she removed the straw from the glass, dropped it on the table, and gulped the contents of the glass in one go.“The hell?” My brows shot up, but I said nothing. She cleaned her mouth with her arm and turned to where Katrina was writing down an order.“Another one!” she yelled, and Kat's head lifted from what she was doing to face us. S

CALISTA“Cal.” Sera's voice trembled from the speaker. “I never knew he was the man you kept telling me about. If I had known he was your stepfather… I would have created a distance between us.”“You never sent a picture of how he looked. All you've talked about is your hatred towards him and how you never wanted to be in his life.” She let out a shaky breath and continued. “I will never do something that will destroy the precious bond we have together. So… please, I beg you to forgive me.”If it were other times, I would have done so.I stared at the phone on the dressing table in silence. After a while, I turned and walked to the wardrobe. Opening the doors, my eyes skimmed through the dresses, and I picked one, walking over to the bed and throwing it there.“Let's meet tonight,” I said, walking to the dressing table and pulling one of the drawers. Inside was a key. I grabbed it and closed the drawer. “This isn't something we can talk about over the phone.”“O-okay, where is the pla
