Matteo's POV

The scent of antiseptic filled my lungs firstfollowed by the warmth of sunlight pressing through the window blinds, diffused and gentle, like the world had finally stopped screaming and started whispering again.

My body ached in places I couldn’t name, but my heart my chest felt heavier than anything the machines had strapped me to, like the weight of unspoken things had followed me into this room.

I blinked.

The world returned in pieces.

Beeping monitors, the low hum of the vents above, and then… her. Sarah. Curled in the chair beside my bed, eyes red, fingers still tangled with mine.

She looked exhausted.

But beautiful.

Even now.

Even after the storm I’d put her through.

Even after all the cruel things I’d said to push her away, just to protect her from the mess behind my name and my blood.

She stirred when she saw my eyes open, sitting straighter, blinking fast as if part of her had doubted I’d ever really wake up again.

“Hey,” she whispered, voice fragile but laced wi

The sky had begun to bleed into dusk, streaks of orange and violet painting the horizon. I sat in the back seat of the car I’d booked, eyes staring blankly ahead. My thoughts wandered back to the cold tension I left behind at Alessandro’s estate. Matteo hadn’t said much, but silence had screamed louder than words ever could. I pressed a hand against my chest. The driver hummed along to a soft tune on the radio, but I was barely listening. I just wanted to get back to Dr. Langston’s hospital, to Mia, to peace what little was left of it.Then the car slowed sharply. Tires screeched. I jolted forward, heart thudding. “What the hell?” the driver murmured. A sleek black car had swerved across the highway, cutting us off. We came to a stop too fast.I blinked in confusion, sitting up straighter. That car there was something familiar about it. My stomach turned. I reached for my phone, already knowing I wouldn’t like what was coming next. Before I could dial anyone, the door to the black car

  • Falling in Love with my cocky boss   Chapter 70

I sat back, gently stroking Mia’s hand, my eyes flicking now and then to the soft rhythm of her chest. She was fighting, even in silence, and that gave me hope. The hospital room was dim and quiet, except for the occasional buzz of machines and the hushed conversations of nurses in the hallway. I’d carved a little bubble here, just us.My phone buzzed on the side table. I glanced at it without urgency, assuming it was Ethan checking in but the name that flashed on the screen made my brows furrow sharply.Alessandro.I hesitated for a moment, then picked it up and unlocked the screen. His message was brief surprisingly so. But the words sent a chill trickling down my spine instantly.“Sarah, I need to see you. It’s about the ball. Two weeks from now. You must attend to everything that depends on it. There’s something I haven’t told you.”I read the message again, slower this time. The ball? What could depend on some glamorous, high-profile event? What hadn’t he told me? And why send it

We stayed there in silence, Ethan’s arms still wrapped around me like a promise I didn’t know I needed. His presence didn’t demand anything it simply reminded me I wasn’t alone anymore.I pulled away slightly, but not far. “I’m scared,” I admitted. “Everything feels like it could disappear again. Just like that.” I snapped my fingers softly. “I don’t think I could survive losing again.”Ethan didn’t blink. “Then you won’t have to.” His voice was low, firm. “I’m not asking you to move on or forget anyone. I just want you to know I’m here. That’s all.”My throat tightened. Maybe it was too soon. Maybe I was too broken. But I found myself wishing the world could just pause in this moment. Just for a little longer. The door beside us opened gently, and Dr. Langston stepped out. His face held a calm warmth. “She’s resting now. Peacefully. You can sit with her again in a little while.”I nodded with a smile. “Thank you. For everything.” He glanced between Ethan and me, and his eyes twinkled

  • Falling in Love with my cocky boss   Chapter 68

Sarah’s POVMorning sunlight filtered through gauzy curtains, wrapping the room in warmth I didn’t feel. I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at nothing, trying not to shatter completely.I hadn’t slept a wink. Not with Dr. Langston’s words echoing in my mind. Matteo my Matteo fighting something so deadly alone. And I never knew. He never gave me the chance to know. The message I’d sent him last night still burned in my chest. A breakup written with trembling fingers and a heart bursting with pain, not understanding. Not forgiveness. Just raw emotion. Now, I regretted it. Every single word. I should’ve asked. I should’ve waited. I should’ve gone to him, held his face in my hands, and made him look me in the eye and tell me everything himself. But instead, I walked away. Just like that. And now, I wasn’t sure if I’d ever find a way back to him. Not with the heaviness still choking the air around me.Mia stirred slightly in the guest room. I tiptoed in and sat beside her, brushing a ha

  • Falling in Love with my cocky boss   Chapter 67

Matteo’s POVThe cold breeze brushing against my skin wasn’t from the window it came from within. A storm settled in my chest the second my phone vibrated and her name lit the screen.I reached for it lazily, half-expecting something simple maybe a reminder to eat, maybe another soft “thinking of you.” Instead, her words dug into my chest like glass buried beneath skin. You should’ve told me, Matteo… I can’t do this anymore.I read it again. And again. And again. My hand slowly dropped to my side, phone still clutched in it, like my body had forgotten how to function under the weight of heartbreak. The world went silent.Everything around me the soft ticking of the clock, the occasional rustling of leaves outside, the creak of the old wooden stairs blurred into meaningless background. The only thing loud enough to hear was the crack inside my soul. And it was deafening.I closed my eyes, trying to pretend I didn’t read those words. That they weren’t real. That I hadn’t just lost the o

  • Falling in Love with my cocky boss   Chapter 66

Sarah’s POVThe van pulled up to a quiet, ivy-cloaked building nestled deep behind wrought iron gates. It didn’t look like a typical hospital more like a forgotten manor redesigned with silent precision. The entrance doors slid open without a creak, revealing polished floors, modern lights, and eerie silence. A few nurses in deep navy uniforms approached us like clockwork, nodding without a word.Ethan helped guide Mia’s gurney while I trailed behind, my fingers brushing the wall as we moved past closed doors and scentless corridors. Everything smelled… sterile, almost too perfect.“This is Dr. Langston’s property,” Ethan finally said. “He only takes private cases here. No reporters. No threats. She’ll be safe.”I wanted to believe that. I did. But something in the air made my lungs tighten. Still, I followed as they wheeled Mia into a glass-walled room filled with soft lighting and advanced equipment.Dr. Langston arrived moments later tall, suited, silver-haired. His eyes flicked ov
