Chapter 9

Author: Clear River
Xavier got drunk and crashed into a pole, severely injuring his right hand. In simple terms, Xavier would never be a doctor again.

He was lucky to escape with his life, but it wouldn’t be long before he was behind bars, paying the price for his reckless choices.

Around the same time, I received a text from Eve. “Xavier is ruined. I’ll let you have him. Honestly, he was never the one for me anyway.”

When I read her message, I felt an odd sense of disbelief.

In such a short time, everything had come to an end. Xavier would never return to the life he was proud of. The career he had built and the prestige he flaunted were all gone. Even his long-time first love, his so-called soulmate, had given up on him.

For reasons I didn’t fully understand, I decided to visit him. His hair was shaved short, and the face that used to be sharp and handsome now looked like it had aged a decade. His once-bright eyes were now dull and lifeless.

That night, Xavier sent me a ton of messages. I didn’t even know how he managed to get my exact address.First, he sent a cake. Then, he ordered a huge bouquet of roses from a florist. I didn’t accept any of it, so he kept piling gifts at my doorstep, just to get me to see him.Through my security camera, I watched as the gifts were stacked into a small mountain outside my door, and I couldn’t help but feel a little wistful.I thought about how, back when we were still married, Xavier was always busy with work. He was so consumed by his job that he barely had time for me. We had never spent anniversaries, birthdays, or Valentine’s Day together. On Valentine’s Day this year, I had prepared a full dinner. I went out early to buy his favorite records and even ordered us a new pair of rings, hoping for a memorable evening together. He had called me, saying he’d be home soon.I sat at the table, waiting until 11 p.m. All the food had gone cold. It wasn’t until the early hours of the mo

Xavier yanked his hand away from Eve’s grasp. He didn’t care that she nearly stumbled from the sudden movement. He hurried over to me, a look of panic on his face as he tried to explain, “Sara, I didn’t know you were telling the truth. Please, hear me out. I didn’t mean to put you through all of this.”I scoffed, watching the regret set in his eyes.“Xavier, you made me lose my job, got me publicly humiliated by strangers, plastered my face all over the streets, and fueled an online mob against me. Do you think a few words will make me forget everything?”Not a chance. Xavier knew it wasn’t possible either. In a rush, he pulled out his phone and deleted all the hate-filled posts about me from the internet.“Sara, just give me a chance. I’ll give you the answers you want,” he pleaded, his eyes shifting between me and Eve, hoping for some kind of forgiveness. He might feel guilty now, but it was all too late.I said, loud and clear, “Not a chance.”By that time, I had already s

“It makes me happy to see you miserable. I revel in it. Everyone should own up to what they did, and I’m admitting I did it, but could you admit to what you're guilty of?”His shamelessness was driving me crazy. After hanging up, I quickly called the HR department at my company to explain the situation. To my surprise, the reason for my dismissal had nothing to do with the scandal. It was Xavier who had meddled behind the scenes. He was a doctor with plenty of connections, and getting me fired was just a small favor for him.I set my phone down and returned to the hotel. Sitting down, I finally started thinking clearly. The chaotic thoughts in my head slowly calmed.Since I didn’t do anything wrong, I had nothing to hide. As long as the police don’t find me guilty, Xavier’s false accusations would backfire on him eventually. Not long after, I heard a commotion outside my room. When I opened the door, I was shocked to see that someone had spray-painted words on the door that read:

I shoved his hand away as he tried to help with the luggage.“Fine. Tomorrow, the day after, or whenever. We have plenty of time to get divorced.”He shot me a skeptical look and replied, “You better stick to your word. Even if you beg me, I won’t get back together with you.”I didn’t say another word. I grabbed my suitcases and walked out the door. I had already called a cab and booked a hotel in advance. After days and nights without sleep, arranging everything for Christine’s funeral, I collapsed onto the couch at the hotel and instantly drifted off into a deep sleep. When I woke up, my phone was flooded with messages. A few of them were from Xavier.“I have time this afternoon. Let’s get divorced. Don’t make me wait for you.”Then, there were some messages from friends asking why Xavier had suddenly posted about being single on social media. I replied to a few close friends, got ready, and headed out. When I arrived at the courthouse, Xavier had been waiting for who knew how

  • False Death and Forgotten Promise   Chapter 4

Seeing the devastated look on his face, all I felt was a wave of bitter irony.“If you had come to the hospital when I called, maybe your mom wouldn't be dead,” I said coldly. “Your coworkers and friends were looking for you, but Eve was all you cared about. You ignored my messages and blocked my calls. You killed your mom.”Something in my words must have struck a nerve. His eyes widened like an enraged animal as he shouted, “If you hadn’t been so jealous as to kill Eve, none of this would’ve happened! This is all your fault. You’re a murderer!”I was stunned. Even after everything, Xavier blamed everyone else for what had happened. I knew he was running from the truth, from something he couldn’t bring himself to accept. So, I said nothing. I just told the workers to keep digging for a hole deep enough for Christine’s ashes to rest. I carefully gathered the ashes back into the urn, though some had already mixed with the soil, forever part of the earth.Xavier stood there, eyes re
