Prologue

Devyn’s POV

I understand now that all my recent decisions led me here. I could have avoided this if only I spoke up sooner. If only I stayed away from him. And yet here we were.

“How could you do this to me, Devyn? How the fuck does this justify everything we have been through? HOW?” He continued to shout at me with tears of betrayal streaming down his face.

I know what I’ve done, and I know I should regret it, but I don’t.

Hurting him was the last thing on my mind, but when push came to shove, I needed to look after myself first. Where was he when shit went down and I sat with nothing but disappointment? Now he wanted to scream at me about betrayal when he was the one who threw everything away.

He was the one who threw me away.

“I’m sorry.” Is all I managed to say. I broke this man and could not even bother with a half-assed apology.

He scoffed and ran his fingers through his hair. “Sorry? I don’t think you know what that means, Dev.” He hissed out and looked to be getting angrier by the second. I need to diffuse this situation before Clarissa gets home. I stepped towards him and gave him the look I knew he loved. With an expression of shock on his face, I wrap my arms around him and lay my head on his chest. His heartbeat was erratic but calming.

“I was going to tell you. But things got so hectic and you were always out of town, not answering your phone when I called. I needed you, but it seemed as if you were sick of me.” I answer honestly. “Will you please forgive me?”

He relaxed in my arms and ran his fingers through my hair as he caressed it. Why did it always feel like I was being gaslighted recently? This can’t be healthy. Clarissa was right, I shouldn’t be with him any longer. This needs to end.

Releasing a groan, he finally spoke. “You know I want to believe you, Dev. I honestly do. But this, this is all a bit too much for me. I have come to realize that I love you too much to let you leave, so…”

That silence. What was he up to?? My heartbeat reached a dangerous level when I felt him calming down. This silence was never good.

He reached behind him and I felt the cold steel beneath my chin. “I will just have to make sure no one else can have you anymore.”

I did this. I created this monster because of my poor choices, and now I would reap the disappointment. A bang reverberated through the apartment, and then darkness took me.
