Carson

My father entered without knocking—of course he did. The heavy door creaked open like a warning, but he moved through it like he owned the air.

Jacob lounged on the couch like a bored ghost, while Willis and Grant flipped through ancient tomes and reports, the paper whispering secrets we were too tired to hear.

The conclave was tonight.

We called it, and if we were walking into the lion’s den, we’d do it armed with knowledge—and with teeth bared.

The strigoi were coming. That much was inevitable. So was the presence of the Balshov clan, still angered over the clash outside Nocturne. And Adrian… Adrian had entered Blackgate. That alone raised the stakes.

With him, lines didn’t just blur—they shattered. And when boundaries vanish in our world, something ancient and irreversible tends to rise from the ashes.

This meeting wasn’t just politics. It was about drawing lines in blood and making sure no one crossed them again.

I also had another goal—Lisa. I wanted her released to us. An

I feel sorry for him but also don’t.!! The sneaky way he voiced that Adrian walked into his territory like gaining his father sympathy over that but I’m glad his father voiced out that way. I know he meant well about keeping Natalie but to me he’s taking the wrong way

Adrian“There’s nothing inherently magical about Brian offering himself up,” I said, tone even, deliberate. “You know that.”Dimitri didn’t move, but I felt his posture stiffen—old defensiveness coiling in his muscles.“The purpose of the tribute system has always been clear: end the bloodline through the male heir and revoke the family’s access to Strigoi privileges. That’s it. Nothing more.”I leaned forward slightly.“In Brian’s case—he’s gone. No sons. No heir to continue the line. And frankly? Nicole and Natalie want nothing more to do with your protection. They’re ready to walk.”Dimitri’s lip curled, but I pressed on.“You’ve already lost this one. Cut your losses. Find new tributes. You’re wasting your energy trying to cling to what’s slipping through your claws.”I let the next line hang like a dagger.“The mating season is approaching, and your list is growing thin. Too many women failed transformation this year.”Dimitri’s eyes narrowed—then widened, just a bit.“Maybe it’s

Adrian“You might as well have concocted all of this just to get Natalie for yourself,” Dimitri sneered, his voice full of venom.I didn’t respond, but I watched Carson—his fists clenched, barely keeping it together. And yet… I knew the wolves weren’t lying. If we tested that parchment, the blood would match. It would be Brian’s.But knowing the truth didn’t make this any easier.Because if everything they said was real—if Brian truly made that sacrifice—then Natalie belonged to them now. To the wolves. And if they chose to keep her… there would be nothing I could do. No power, no persuasion, no treaty that would make her mine again. And I wasn’t sure I could live with that.“Why would I do that?” Carson asked, his tone sharp.“Because you want her,” Dimitri said, voice rising. “I saw you at the meet and greet—pleading with Michael to give her to you. He said no, so you came up with a better angle. One that couldn’t be verified. One where the man who could speak for himself was conven

Adrian“Brian feared the Strigoi wouldn’t play fair,” Jacob said, steady but grave. “He claimed his life was in danger—that assassins were hunting him.”A murmur rippled through the room. Not loud. Just enough for the truth to sink in.“We thought he was paranoid,” Jacob continued. “But my father chose not to ignore him. He assigned warriors—some of our best. They protected his home, followed him, shadowed him day and night.”He paused. His voice dropped, almost reverent.“On the evening he decided to deliver the contract severance to the Strigoi house in Ashberge… they were ambushed.”I sat back, spine rigid.“They were slaughtered.”The word echoed like a thunderclap.“Everything pointed to Strigoi involvement—but we couldn’t prove it. There were claw marks too. And bullets. It wasn’t clean. Whoever carried out the attack didn’t want questions—they wanted a message. All of our men died. My father had to pull the team guarding Brian’s family just to prevent further loss.”He looked a

Adrian I stared at the parchment Carson had laid on the table—blood-inked, binding, final—and wished I could pretend it didn’t exist. But it was real. Undeniable. Brian Pierce’s signature stared back at me like a ghost reaching from the grave. If he truly made that sacrifice—for his wife and daughter—then everything suddenly aligned. It explained why Michael took control of the estate. Why he moved like a man with something to hide. Brian must have severed ties to Strigoi-gotten wealth, purging himself of bloodstained legacy, and handed it all to his brother. Trusting him. Believing he would protect what remained of their family. Instead, Michael kept the inheritance and offered Natalie like a pawn on a debt that wasn’t hers to pay. Disgust flared in my chest. It wasn’t just cruel—it was calculated. He wanted to erase Brian’s line, cleanly and legally, while shielding his own name. Natalie wasn’t tribute—she was collateral damage in a quiet family war. And now… I had no choi

  • Fated In Darkness   98 The Tribute Issue

Carson“Graham Neeson,” my father said firmly. “We ask that you release his daughter to us, since he has given himself as tribute.”Dimitri bared his fangs, fury bleeding into every word. “I will do no such thing. Graham owes—and he will pay.”My jaw clenched. The arrogance was unbearable.“Pay? He’s already offered himself. That’s the law—you know it. I heard your people discussing the transaction. You're stalling because you want to steal from us. He handed her over. You want his wealth? Fine. Take it. But she’s ours.”Dimitri growled, eyes burning red. “Where’s your written proof?”I froze.“There is none, is there?” he said, voice slick with triumph. “If Graham wants out of his obligation, he needs to write it in blood. And it must be offered to flame.”He knew. He knew we didn’t have the document. I’d walked right into the trap. There’d been no time to ask Graham for a formalized oath—not during the meet-and-greet, not with everything happening. And Dimitri knew that too. That sm

CarsonAdrian arrived like he always did—unhurried, unapologetic, untouchable. He walked in with that infuriating calm, his presence folding into the room like he belonged to it more than anyone else.He didn’t acknowledge the wait, didn’t offer a word of apology. Just sat, eyes gleaming with that cool detachment he wore like armor. And it got under my skin. The strigoi never said it outright, but their actions screamed it—they still saw us as lesser. Tools. Foot soldiers. Beasts bred for blood and war, not politics. They smiled at the treaty, but beneath it, they still believed they reigned supreme. They had another thing coming.Annabelle’s voice broke through the tension. “We won’t waste time. Alpha Cain—state the purpose of this meeting.”My father adjusted in his seat, slow and deliberate. The room leaned in.“There are three matters to address tonight,” he said. “We’ll go through them one at a time.”He paused, then leveled his gaze at Dimitri.“First: a breach of the accords. A
