Roman POV:
“What are you doing?” I looked up from the file I was poring over, surprised that I’d been so engrossed I hadn't heard Julian come in. After the argument we had the other day, it'd taken a while, but we'd finally made up. “Glossing through some files.” He folded his arms and inclined his head to the side. “It looks like you're doing a lot more than glossing to me. You didn’t even hear me walk in.” I snorted and closed the document. “Well, I was glossing intently through those files.” “Mm-hmm. Those files wouldn’t happen to be related to the rogue case, would they?” “...well.” He plopped down on a nearby chair. “That's supposed to be my job, but okay.” “I had the time,” I responded, but even I knew that was a lie. I just needed to do something. “Right. What do you have?” “Just like Pascal said during the last meeting, these attacks are well thought out. As though the rogues know exactly when they're supposed to attack, and how they're to move when they do.” “True.” I nodded at his reply, satisfied that he understood. “Then it must be because someone among them knows the routine of our pack. Knows exactly when and where our weakest links are.” I indicated the file at that moment. “Most times, it’s only someone who's compromised that can do this. I do not think it is someone who's lived in this pack all their lives. So, I'm checking to see who has left this place in the past few years, and has just returned.” “If there truly is a spy among us, I'm not taking any risk. Man, woman, teenager- we have to screen every returnee.” “That’s a good plan. I had something similar in mind, and had actually come to you to explain. But I couldn't have said it better. It’s a very good plan.” “Of course it is. I thought of it.” I bared my teeth in a smile to which he responded with an eyeroll and a rare smile. We worked in silence, and I continued to scroll through the file, my nose scrunched up. Suddenly, I stumbled upon a name, and my eyes widened. “Gatrix-Hill had a daughter?” Julian looked up from his phone, confusion initially evident in his expression. Then he raised a brow. “Isn't that the person you're getting married to?” “No. That's Tanya.” I stared at the lady’s picture. She seemed familiar, somehow. “This one's name is Audrey.” He had a blank look on his face. “I once heard that he did. Didn't bother to verify.” “Interesting.” My eyes didn't- couldn't- leave the picture, for some odd reason. “She looks nothing like her sister.” He hummed. “Now that I think about it, I did hear one time that someone left the pack for the human civilization. That was years ago though, and…well, it could be her.” He shrugged and went back to his phone. My eyes glided across the page. “She just returned. This afternoon, in fact.” Hearing that, he glanced at me again. “Just after the rogue attack last night? Well, that's awfully convenient.” He was right. That was awfully convenient. I studied the lady's photo once more, and subconsciously brushed it with a thumb, suddenly filled with the desire to know her more. Then I snapped back to my senses. What was wrong with me? I was engaged to her sister! Immediately the thought seemed to wrap around my neck like a noose, and I got to my feet, catching Julian's attention. “What's the matter?” “I need to go for a run. Take care of things till I get back.” His black eyes regarded me, and I had the feeling he could read my mind. “Be careful.” I snorted and made for the door. “I always am.” I nodded at the people baring their necks to me as I passed, patting some of the children's heads- the only positive expression of love I allowed myself to show before the members of the pack. Father had taught me to be ruthless. Cold. My mother had died immediately after my birth, he said, on her bed. He’d come to pick me from the nurse’s arms later that night. And though I was his bastard son, I was his only heir, so he kept trying to make me as heartless as possible such that I wouldn't waver in the face of adversity. I'd done my best to live up to that, except I always crumbled when it came to love. I'd never known it. I craved it like a drug, and for years I'd sought for my mate, wanting to share that emotion with her and only her. I wanted to do everything my father had never done for my mother for her, and love her like mine had never been loved. “Alpha.” I paused, hearing the familiar voice, and lifted my head. Tanya Hill stood before me, glowing and looking every bit like the kind of woman I wanted to rule beside me. I might not have my mate, but I had her. And she was enough. I grinned when I saw her, admiring the way the sun lightened up her hair. “Tanya. How are you?” She beamed. “I'm alright, Alpha. I hope you're okay too.” “I'm very well. And I've told you before, call me Roman.” A blush formed on her face. “Well, I…Roman.” She was really beautiful. “It’s fortunate that I saw you here,” she continued with a smile. “I was going to visit your quarters later to discuss the wedding outfits with you. Mother has had this beautiful royal blue gown arranged for me, so I thought it would be amazing if we matched. What do you think?” “Whatever you wish. You'd look exquisite in anything.” A brief picture of that lady I'd seen in the file flashed through my mind, dressed in the most beautiful blue gown I'd ever seen. What in the love of Luna- “Are you okay with wearing a blue suit?” I blinked. Tanya had an expectant look on her face. What was wrong with me? “Roman?” She was enough. “Yes,” I breathed, focusing on her. “I am.” The smile on her face somehow got even brighter. “You’d look really handsome in it, I’m sure. Well, um…that's all I wanted to find out. I'll be on my way now Roman.” I nodded, watching her as she walked away, before continuing to the woods. I really needed a run.Roman POV: “Nolan!” a huge man standing in front of a sportscar outside the hospital yelled, taking my friend's hand and shaking it vigorously. “Wow! You look good, my friend!” Nolan smiled back and shook the man's hand just as vigorously, then released it a while later. “Hugo. What a surprise! I never thought I'd see you in this part of the city!” “Me neither,” said the man, laughing boisterously. “But it just so happens that Yolanda’s sister is giving birth at this hospital, so I had to drive her here.” He rolled his shirt sleeves up, revealing a snake tattoo. “This is quite cozy, Nolan. I can see why you love it here. A bit too cozy for me though.” He laughed again, and I used the opportunity of being virtually invisible to him to size him up. His bronze skin indicated his being a foreigner, and there was a sharpness in his eyes that showed shrewdness. But that wasn't what set off my suspicion. It was the watch he wore that had a grey wolf insignia. Very few got their han
Audrey POV: Few hours after that strangely beautiful occurrence, I had another vision. Not a dream, and not about wolves. It was about Roman. We'd been lying in a very familiar bed, and he'd had my hand in his, slowly moving his fingers over mine. “You know one thing I'm very grateful for, love?” I'd turned to him, smiling. “What's that?” “The fact that you're beautiful, inside and out.” He pecked my cheek. “You're an amazing woman. I'm in love with a wonderful person. That's what makes me very glad.” I opened my eyes after that vision to see Selena walking into the parlor. She'd just returned from work. “Will Mr. Howell be available by this time?” She gave me a surprised look, was about to say no, then shook her head. “I'll make a call.” I was en route to his office minutes later. “Welcome back, Miss Audrey.” I smiled at Tristan and sat quietly in the chair. “Hi. I'm sorry for disturbing your evening. I just…I had something to offload.” He waved off my apology. “Pleas
Audrey POV: I woke up in the middle of the afternoon after a short nap, but paused when I sensed a dip on the edge of my bed. Someone else was in the room. I opened my eyes to greet Selena immediately, but froze when I saw that it wasn't her. What the- “Hey, babe.” I blinked at the shirtless man sitting by my bed, shocked by his presence. “Um, who are you?” He gave me a hurt look. “What do you mean by that, Audrey? Are you trying to say you don't know me?” He knew my name? I stared at him incredulously, then sighed. “First off, how did you get in my room? Secondly, how do you know me?” He inclined his head to the side. “I'm your mate, love. I'm with you wherever you are. And I know you just as you know me. We're together.” Mate? What was that supposed to mean- A weird pang of pain appeared in my chest, and I winced. He was by my side in an instant. “Are you okay?” he whispered, kneading my fingers gently, his face not very clear in my vision. “Hey. You good?” I huffed
Roman POV: I should have known the interrogation session was coming. I crossed my legs- an action I seemed to express whenever I was about to pour my heart to him- and placed my hands on my thighs. “Audrey's missing.” He gave me a small frown of confusion. “Audrey…Audrey who?” “My mate.” His eyes widened. “You have a mate?” I furrowed my brows. “I didn't tell you?” “Not that I can recall.” He sighed, sitting crossed-legged as well. “What happened?” “She was kidnapped, then left for dead.” Even as I said it, I felt the strong urge to kill Marvin for this. Perhaps it was truly time for me to do so, whether or not it would incur my father's wrath. He was disrupting every part of my life, and that was infuriating. “That’s terrible.” He narrowed his eyes, echoing my irritation. “You know who did it?” “Yup.” I scowled. “I’ve arrested one, but the other is under my father’s protection. If I do something harmful to him, that man will materialize from thin air and try to control m
Roman POV: This was messed up. I'd stayed in a motel that was thankfully on the outskirts of the area, tossing what was left of my cash on them to get a place to sleep and a bite of food. It'd been a while since I'd been among humans, and I'd forgotten the manner in which some places took care of their surroundings. These ones were anything but neat, and I’d wrinkled my nose more than five times as I walked into the room they'd assigned for me. It was small, not dirty but still untidy, and I was tired, so I didn't have the energy to fight. However, as I woke up the following morning to sensing teeth on my leg and opening my eyes to see a rat there, I realized just how full of garbage this place truly was. I couldn't check out and go to another hotel though, since I'd susccessfully spend every dollar I had on their bed and breakfast. I groaned and stood, my back aching. After the insane run from home, I was too concerned with finding Audrey I forgot that I hadn't taken care of
Audrey POV: Selena squeezed my hand quietly as we sat in the therapist's office, her eyes conveying comradery and encouragement. But I found it difficult to calm down, my heart beating fast. We'd been directed to his office a while ago, and he was apparently being held back by something. That only served to add to my anxiety. “I told you, Audrey. Don't worry about a thing,” Selena said, her voice soft. “He knows exactly what he's doing.” “It doesn't feel like it,” I muttered. “Why is he late?” “It's out of place for him to be tardy, I have to say,” she responded, looking around. “But don't worry. I'm sure he'd be here soon. In the meantime, I need you to take deep breaths and just…well, just calm down.” I sighed, not finding it in me to refute her. To make up for my lack of enthusiasm, I quietened and looked around the office as well. I hadn’t had a good chance to look at the decor because of my nervousness. It was very minimalistic, but I loved the color scheme of the decor.
