LOGINRoman POV:
“What are you doing?” I looked up from the file I was poring over, surprised that I’d been so engrossed I hadn't heard Julian come in. After the argument we had the other day, it'd taken a while, but we'd finally made up. “Glossing through some files.” He folded his arms and inclined his head to the side. “It looks like you're doing a lot more than glossing to me. You didn’t even hear me walk in.” I snorted and closed the document. “Well, I was glossing intently through those files.” “Mm-hmm. Those files wouldn’t happen to be related to the rogue case, would they?” “...well.” He plopped down on a nearby chair. “That's supposed to be my job, but okay.” “I had the time,” I responded, but even I knew that was a lie. I just needed to do something. “Right. What do you have?” “Just like Pascal said during the last meeting, these attacks are well thought out. As though the rogues know exactly when they're supposed to attack, and how they're to move when they do.” “True.” I nodded at his reply, satisfied that he understood. “Then it must be because someone among them knows the routine of our pack. Knows exactly when and where our weakest links are.” I indicated the file at that moment. “Most times, it’s only someone who's compromised that can do this. I do not think it is someone who's lived in this pack all their lives. So, I'm checking to see who has left this place in the past few years, and has just returned.” “If there truly is a spy among us, I'm not taking any risk. Man, woman, teenager- we have to screen every returnee.” “That’s a good plan. I had something similar in mind, and had actually come to you to explain. But I couldn't have said it better. It’s a very good plan.” “Of course it is. I thought of it.” I bared my teeth in a smile to which he responded with an eyeroll and a rare smile. We worked in silence, and I continued to scroll through the file, my nose scrunched up. Suddenly, I stumbled upon a name, and my eyes widened. “Gatrix-Hill had a daughter?” Julian looked up from his phone, confusion initially evident in his expression. Then he raised a brow. “Isn't that the person you're getting married to?” “No. That's Tanya.” I stared at the lady’s picture. She seemed familiar, somehow. “This one's name is Audrey.” He had a blank look on his face. “I once heard that he did. Didn't bother to verify.” “Interesting.” My eyes didn't- couldn't- leave the picture, for some odd reason. “She looks nothing like her sister.” He hummed. “Now that I think about it, I did hear one time that someone left the pack for the human civilization. That was years ago though, and…well, it could be her.” He shrugged and went back to his phone. My eyes glided across the page. “She just returned. This afternoon, in fact.” Hearing that, he glanced at me again. “Just after the rogue attack last night? Well, that's awfully convenient.” He was right. That was awfully convenient. I studied the lady's photo once more, and subconsciously brushed it with a thumb, suddenly filled with the desire to know her more. Then I snapped back to my senses. What was wrong with me? I was engaged to her sister! Immediately the thought seemed to wrap around my neck like a noose, and I got to my feet, catching Julian's attention. “What's the matter?” “I need to go for a run. Take care of things till I get back.” His black eyes regarded me, and I had the feeling he could read my mind. “Be careful.” I snorted and made for the door. “I always am.” I nodded at the people baring their necks to me as I passed, patting some of the children's heads- the only positive expression of love I allowed myself to show before the members of the pack. Father had taught me to be ruthless. Cold. My mother had died immediately after my birth, he said, on her bed. He’d come to pick me from the nurse’s arms later that night. And though I was his bastard son, I was his only heir, so he kept trying to make me as heartless as possible such that I wouldn't waver in the face of adversity. I'd done my best to live up to that, except I always crumbled when it came to love. I'd never known it. I craved it like a drug, and for years I'd sought for my mate, wanting to share that emotion with her and only her. I wanted to do everything my father had never done for my mother for her, and love her like mine had never been loved. “Alpha.” I paused, hearing the familiar voice, and lifted my head. Tanya Hill stood before me, glowing and looking every bit like the kind of woman I wanted to rule beside me. I might not have my mate, but I had her. And she was enough. I grinned when I saw her, admiring the way the sun lightened up her hair. “Tanya. How are you?” She beamed. “I'm alright, Alpha. I hope you're okay too.” “I'm very well. And I've told you before, call me Roman.” A blush formed on her face. “Well, I…Roman.” She was really beautiful. “It’s fortunate that I saw you here,” she continued with a smile. “I was going to visit your quarters later to discuss the wedding outfits with you. Mother has had this beautiful royal blue gown arranged for me, so I thought it would be amazing if we matched. What do you think?” “Whatever you wish. You'd look exquisite in anything.” A brief picture of that lady I'd seen in the file flashed through my mind, dressed in the most beautiful blue gown I'd ever seen. What in the love of Luna- “Are you okay with wearing a blue suit?” I blinked. Tanya had an expectant look on her face. What was wrong with me? “Roman?” She was enough. “Yes,” I breathed, focusing on her. “I am.” The smile on her face somehow got even brighter. “You’d look really handsome in it, I’m sure. Well, um…that's all I wanted to find out. I'll be on my way now Roman.” I nodded, watching her as she walked away, before continuing to the woods. I really needed a run.Audrey POV: “That's the Luna?” someone questioned in a low tone as Roman and I walked past some of the buildings under renovation to the safe house's gate. “Damn. I didn't see it before, but she's really beautiful.” I blushed in embarrassment, and Roman chuckled at my expression before pecking my forehead. I stared up at him, feeling love bubbling up from some private area in my heart. I still hadn't gotten most of my memories back, but I was sure that I adored him with all my heart before the head injury. That was why, in this crowd of numerous people who were bowing to us as we walked by, I felt at ease with the mere fact that he held my hand. As had been the custom for a few days now, cheers followed our way to a private bunker that had been set for us the moment we walked in, and Roman locked it behind us when we entered, pinning me against the wall. “Finally,” he breathed, his words tingling my skin. “I have you all to myself.” “I've not exactly been able to go anywhere,
Audrey POV: “Dumbass,” Julian scoffed, before being escorted away by some construction workers. Roman chuckled, wrapping an arm around my waist and pulling me close. The moment we'd returned, we'd called for a meeting- actually, Roman called for a meeting. I just went because I was his mate- and informed some people who he called elders and family heads on the situation at hand. He grimly explained the state of the compound, and they surprisingly took it in stride. Then he appointed a woman named Charlotte to be in charge of the rehabilitation project. Renovations for the the pack compound had started in earnest, and although Julian stubbornly wanted to take on the responsibility attributed to his role as Beta, Roman had just placed him on house arrest. He'd been cooped up in the makeshift infirmary underground, and hearing Roman give him an Alpha command placing him on house arrest made him sadder than normal. But he’d be alright, according to Roman. And I didn't doubt it. In
Audrey POV: I sat quietly, staring up at the stars. Despite the hour, I didn't feel afraid or worried for Roman. Perhaps it was because we were at a temple that I felt oddly at peace, but at least I didn't feel unpleasant. The sound of a twig breaking attracted my attention, and I whirled around to see a young woman approaching me. Her hair glittered in the moonlight, and she looked almost otherworldly. I was about to greet her, but paused when I recalled Roman saying that everyone was underground except the bad guys- the Crimson Wolves, he'd called them. This woman had an aura of peace, so why was she out here? “Hello,” she said when she'd reached me. “How are you?” “Um, hi,” I responded sheepishly. Was she a bad person too? She seemed to have stepped out from the temple. The temple. Was Roman okay? “Roman's alright, Audrey.” I heaved a sigh, then blinked, realizing that she'd answered me as though she knew my mate, and wondering if I'd spoken my thoughts out loud. “Yo
Roman POV: I stumbled backward, hitting a wall behind me. But I didn't register the pain, for my shock was greater. Julian was dead. Marvin had made that very clear. However, encasing one in a freezer just so you had some meaningnless victory was… I shut the freezer, feeling the contents of my stomach threatening to regurgitate, and turned around to see Audrey staring at me with a concerned look. “I- you were taking time,” she said, nervously touching her hair. “So I came downstairs to check if you were alright.” She gazed up at me. “Are you alright?” She just lost her memories. She just killed a woman, though in self-defense. She'd watched me kill someone else today. We were scruffy and somewhat messed up, and the ideal thing to do would be to yell about how much pain she was experiencing. Instead, she was giving me a look of worry. “Roman?” “No,” I responded, hearing the crack in my voice. “I am not okay.” I took giant strides and moved her into my arms, feeling my heart
Roman POV: I almost couldn’t believe my eyes. But the facts were right in front of me. I looked with disgust as Jacob repeatedly slammed into Tanya, oddly reminded of the time I walked in on Margrave doing that as well. The two were going at it with so much passion, completely oblivious to the fact that they had an audience. Tanya moaned out loud and stretched downwards, while Jacob added more force to his thrusts, grunting loudly. The fact that I'd imagined Audrey in that position multiple times did not help matters at all. It was time to put an end to this. “You should be ashamed of yourselves.” They froze simultaneously, whipping around to we me and my mate. While Tanya's face twisted in pure fury, Jacob's had an easy smirk on his face. “Please,” he jeered. “You wish you were here.” “Her mate just died,” I replied annoyedly. “And the next thing you do is elect yourself as her new fuck toy?” Tanya growled, pushing herself off the wall while Jacob slid out of her. She'd c
Audrey POV: He joined me within minutes, and I found myself relieved that he hadn't been lying. Then he held my waist, pushed a certain area on the wall in (I hadn't even known that it'd been there), and gripped me tight as it opened slightly. “Hang on,” he said in my mind, before speeding through the space and sidling into a dark corner. “I'm trying to check the compound for signs of life above ground.” I nodded, half understanding what he was talking about. He'd briefly explained the safe house situation, so I kind of got the gist and looked around, my gut wrenching. The area was full of dead people, some with their limbs pulled out of their sockets. I turned to Roman's chest when I couldn't take it anymore. He still carried me in his arms, and I marveled at his strength and he moved stealthily. Then he paused at a point and narrowed his eyes. “The pack house,” he growled out, but in a low tone. It didn't fail to startle me, however. “They're at the pack house.” “How many?
