Mag-log inAuroras POV:
As I sprinted down the hall back to my office Missy noticed and came to my office. What’s with the rush doll? Missy asked. Jumping up from my seat, I quickly went to the door, closed it and locked it. OMG Missy what the hell am I going to do? I mean like bam and now I’m mated. I never wanted to find my mate let alone just after landing my dream job. I started babbling like a recently released psych patient. Whoa, whoa, breath doll, Missy stated as she came over and started rubbing my back in an attempt to get me to breath, so I don’t hyperventilate. After I calmed down a bit I started over. So, as I was on the way to take Alexander the latest contract files for him to sign, I caught the most wonderful smell and it led to his office, and just as I was about to knock the door swung open and bam just like that my mate was on the other side.
Missy jumped up with the biggest grin going from ear to ear doing a happy dance for me. Oh, you have got to give me all the details, what does he look like, who is he, did you even find out his name, Missy started rambling. Now it was me who was laughing and trying to keep her from hyperventilating. Yes, Missy, I know his name unfortunately its Maverick. WHAT?! Missy screams like the Alphas son Maverick! Yes, Missy that is exactly who it is, but he has a fiancée, so I am just waiting for him to come and reject me we all know he doesn’t want a mate. Hold the front door Missy exclaimed what do you mean he has a fiancée? Just like I said Missy he has a fiancée, so my best guess is he is trying to figure out a way to reject me so he can move on since I overheard their wedding is in just two months. Secretly I am devastated even though I never intended to look for my mate, but luck had it I ran into him anyway and never thought that I would ever be rejected. I mean I know I am good looking as I have had plenty of suitors, but never took any of them seriously. To be rejected I was now going to be known as the wolf who couldn’t even be afforded the luxury of at least getting to know her potential mate before it happened.
Knock, Knock
Missy got up to answer the door and gasped as soon as she opened the door and bowed her head immediately as she opened it further. Maverick himself stood before my doorway. May I come in Maverick asked? Sure, I don’t’ see why not. What can I help you with Maverick? I asked, but Goddess knows I just want to run, kiss him, and rub every inch of his divine body. Missy slips out of my office that traitor to leave me alone with Maverick just as I told her I was going to be rejected. Maverick stood just inside the door and anyone that knew him could tell he was nervous. When he was about to shut the door, I stopped him and said, Maverick, I know you have a fiancée and if you’re going to reject me just do it already so we can be done with all this.
Mavericks POV:
As I knocked on her office door for some reason, I was nervous suddenly, I mean her running off is not a normal reaction to finding one’s mate, but at the same time I did just introduce my fiancée of all people. Missy opened the door, gasped and immediately bowed her head while opening the door further. May I come in I asked. Sure, I don’t’ see why not. What can I help you with Maverick? Aurora asked. Goddess knows her voice is like the sweet melody my ears have been craving all these years, and don’t get me started on her caramel apple scent. I could feel the bulge in my pants beginning to grow. So, what looked like nervousness was me really trying to get my dick under control. I was about to shut the door so I could adjust, when Aurora starts speaking again and states Maverick, I know you have a fiancée and if you’re going to reject me just do it already so we can be done with all this. What?! How could she even begin to think I would reject her? Of course, she knows of my past and what the tabloids like to put out there with all my random rendezvous over the last 5 years.
Aurora, I am not here to reject you, I state as sternly as I could muster. Do you really think so little of me after all we did grow up together, I say? Well let’s see everyone has always heard you rant on and on about how you don’t want a mate but to find love the normal human way, plus not to mention don’t forget you have your playboy status to maintain. So, I figure you are sticking to your guns and since you have a fiancée you have found love the normal human way am I getting this right? Aurora asked with an eyebrow arched at the same time. I didn’t know what to say to her response, so I just stood there with a shocked expression on my face.
After about 2 minutes of awkward silence, I say, “Aurora, you may think you know me from what you have read in the tabloids but trust and believe that you cannot believe everything you read or hear for that matter.” So let me be clear to you when I ask will you accompany me to dinner tonight so we can get to know one another again. She just sat there behind her desk shocked, but then she proceeds to lean and place both elbows on her desk and says, “Maverick, you have a fiancée to get back to, don’t you, so I think dinner is out of the question and I have work to catch up on before I can leave for the day so if you will excuse me and leave my office so I can get back to work.” Then she proceeded to turn her attention to the computer sitting to her right and didn’t glance back in my direction. After a few minutes of awkward silence, I left her office and went to the hotel that I had sent Scarlett to earlier today.
The silence that instantly followed Maverick's declaration was absolute. It was not the peaceful, quiet calm of a productive Friday morning in a corporate office building. It was the heavy, suffocating, entirely terrifying silence of a vacuum right before a massive, catastrophic explosion. The air pressure inside my small glass office dropped so rapidly, so violently, that my ears actually popped. Maverick completely filled the doorway. He didn't just stand there. His physical presence entirely consumed the limited space. His broad, incredibly muscular shoulders completely blocked the artificial, fluorescent lighting bleeding in from the hallway, casting long, dark, imposing shadows entirely across the carpeted floor. He was breathing heavily. His chest was rising and falling in sharp, jagged, entirely predatory movements that legitimately threatened to completely rip the expensive, custom-tailored seams of his charcoal suit jacket. But it was his eyes that truly, entirely par
CHAPTER 12: Friday morning arrived with all the grace, subtlety, and sheer destructive force of a massive, uncoordinated train wreck. The corporate headquarters of Xanders Financial was an absolute madhouse. We had a hard, unmovable, entirely unforgiving deadline for the final stages of the Smithson corporate merger, and I was quite literally buried underneath a towering mountain of physical paperwork and glowing digital spreadsheets. My desk looked less like the organized workspace of a junior manager... ...and more like a bomb had gone off inside a high-end stationary store. I had been sitting in this exact, stiff ergonomic chair since six o'clock in the morning. I was desperately, frantically trying to catch up on the hours of critical data entry I had lost over the past three days. Three days that had been entirely derailed due to the massive, six-foot-four, green-eyed distraction that kept forcefully invading my office, my personal space, and my every waking thought. Eve
The penthouse suite of the Four Seasons hotel was originally designed to be a sanctuary. It was supposed to be a glittering, glass-walled testament... ...to the absolute power... ...and the immense, staggering wealth that I was marrying into. Instead... It had become my own personal, incredibly expensive prison. I paced the entire length of the sprawling, open-concept living room. My sharp, red-bottomed stiletto heels clicked rhythmically against the imported, dark Brazilian hardwood floors. Click. Click. Click. The sound echoed sharply through the massive, empty rooms. It was a hollow sound. A lonely sound. Three days. We had been in the city of Dallas for three agonizing, mind-numbing, entirely infuriating days. And in that time, I had seen my supposed fiancé for a grand total of perhaps four hours. "Financial emergencies," Maverick had claimed that very morning. He hadn't even bothered to look me in the eye as he stood in front of the vanity mirror, perfectly knotti
By the time Wednesday morning rolled around, the air inside the Xanders Financial headquarters was absolutely thick with it.Gossip.It hummed through the sleek, modern hallways. It buzzed in the employee breakrooms. It practically vibrated through the frosted glass of my office walls. Everyone... every single person... in the building had noticed. They had noticed that the Alpha’s notoriously elusive son, the playboy who was supposed to be on a romantic vacation with his gorgeous Parisian fiancée, was instead spending ninety percent of his waking hours hovering around the fifteenth floor.Hovering around me.I sat at my desk, my fingers resting motionless over my keyboard. I stared blindly at the complex spreadsheet illuminating my monitor, the numbers blurring together into a meaningless sea of black and white.Inside my mind, Violet was pacing relentlessly. He is close, she hummed, her tail brushing against the edges of my consciousness. I can feel him. He is th
MAVERICK’S POVThe polished mahogany doors of my father’s office loomed before me... heavy... and imposing. For five years, I had successfully avoided this exact room. Five years of European escapades... five years of running from the suffocating weight of the Alpha title. But today... today was different.I pushed the heavy double doors open, the brass hinges completely silent. My father, Alpha Alexander, sat behind his massive desk. The morning sunlight caught the silver at his temples, but his eyes... those piercing, calculating Alpha eyes... were fixed entirely on the mountain of paperwork in front of him.He didn't even look up as my heavy footsteps crossed the thick Persian rug."Dad," I began, letting my voice drop into a low, steady register. "I need access... to the Sales Department's quarterly projections."Alpha Alexander’s pen stopped scratching against the paper. The silence in the room stretched... thin and tight... like a wire about to snap.Slowly, he raised his
Maverick’s POVThe heavy silence that followed Aurora’s departure from the restaurant was more suffocating than any physical weight I had ever carried. I remained seated at the table, the scent of her—that agonizingly perfect blend of caramel, rain-drenched apples, and something uniquely Aurora—lingering in the air like a ghost. On the table sat the wedding invitation Scarlett had so gleefully presented. It was thick, cream-colored cardstock with gold-embossed lettering: The Marriage of Maverick Xanders and Scarlett DuPont. I stared at it until the letters blurred. To the rest of the world, this piece of paper represented a merger of power and prestige. To me, it looked like a tombstone.Lucas, my wolf, was pacing so violently within my mind that I felt my claws involuntarily begin to peek from my fingertips. “She’s gone,” he snarled, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that made my chest ache. “We let the Alpha’s mate walk away while the Delta’s daughter wears our mark on her finge
