Ashley’s P.O.V.
“I am the Alpha here. Every matter should be reported to me!” Standing tall in his Alpha glory, Vincenzo let out a loud growl, thickening the air with his dominant aura. It was like the room itself recoiled at his existence as he snatched the file from Dr. Thomas’s hand. “Alpha, we were about to inform you after checking on her. She is ...” He tried to explain, but Vincenzo raised his hand, silencing him. The room was engulfed by the deafening silence as I could hear my own frantic heartbeat drumming in my ears. I stared at Vincenzo in a catatonic stupor and prepared myself for the inevitable, enduring the unbearable pain in my body. My fate was in the hands of the overbearing Alpha in front of me. Just like the day of my mating ceremony five years ago, when he decided to kick me out of his land without a proper trial. Every passing second escalated my panic as I searched for a speck of emotion on Vincenzo’s cold face. It was impossible to guess his intentions from his indifference. He read the test result as if it were an ordinary issue of his pack, requiring a quick solution. He closed the file and spoke icily. “Consult the other physicians for more details!” This order was his indirect method of saying fuck off, and thankfully, Dr. Thomas took his hint and left with his team after bowing. I didn’t wish to deal with Vincenzo’s anger before voicing my thoughts. “We need to talk!” Crossing his arms over his chest, Vincenzo looked at me as if awaiting a response from me. If he was expecting me to thank him for bringing me back to his pack, he was truly mistaken. “Yes, I need to say goodbye before leaving. It’s the last time we are seeing each other.” “No! You aren’t going anywhere, Ashley Miller!” He snapped at me angrily. “You are sick. It’s not something we have seen before.” I laughed at Vincenzo’s fake concern and coughed, hard enough to taste blood in my mouth. “Poetic! I finally get to die in the place that killed me before!” Although I taunted him, Vincenzo didn’t rise to the bait like a mature man and continued with his previous statement. “Your illness is trauma induced, endangering your life. Ivory is barely hanging on. So, you have to live in my pack to heal, Ashley!” “I don’t need your charity, Alpha Vincenzo.” I couldn’t help but spit out in disgust. “It’s better to die than be a parasite. I won’t let this bond save me!” “It’s not about letting it.” Vincenzo crossed the room slowly, like he was approaching a wounded animal, and spoke firmly. “The mate-bond is already healing you.” As he stepped closer, I felt the pull of the bond, frayed and bitter, but still alive under all the wreckage. I was stunned to see the broken threads of destiny desperately trying to reconnect. Vincenzo also witnessed the bizarre twist of my rotten fate and sighed. “You were on the brink of death, and your wounds weren’t healing like they should. But as we crossed the border of my Enchanted Gardens pack, your vitals shifted. Ivory was able to breathe properly when you were closer to me.” His long, horrifying speech made me feel a cold pit in my stomach, freezing my insides. The tornado of realization hit me hard, shaking my world with its magnitude. Like a leech, I relied on Vincenzo’s life source, borrowing his energy to survive. The injustice of heaven crushed my soul into tiny little pieces as I muttered under my breath. “It’s unfair.” “It is what it is, Ashley.” Vincenzo spoke, “As the doctors have recommended, our broken bond is necessary for you to recover. So, here’s the deal. You will work in my mansion as a maid, and in return, I will make sure you won’t die of this illness.” He offered me a work-treatment plan, planning everything ahead. Vincenzo was the Alpha who didn’t have time for his ex and other trivial matters. As I wasn’t his responsibility anymore, I plainly refused his offer. “Don’t bother, Alpha. My stay here won’t be in your pack’s best interest.” With that, I stood up, even as my head spun. Keeping my brave façade intact despite the pain was my only priority. “Thanks for your concern. I will figure out something on my own.” My firm decision set him on fire as Vincenzo growled furiously, asserting his dominance. “You are a part of my pack now, Ashley. Whatever I say, goes. Don’t you dare defy my orders!” Vincenzo’s audacity to call himself my Alpha burned me from the inside out. I didn’t hold back and hissed at him. “How can I forget you are the Moon Goddess in my life, Alpha Vincenzo Anderson? If you think I am a danger to your pack, you can banish me, depriving me of my life and freedom. And whenever you like, I am again a part of your pack. So, you can see me suffer and enjoy my misery. Is that what you want? Watching me beg you every time I feel unwell, flexing my miserable last days before your pack mates as the Goddess’ justice for previous betrayal?” I felt dizzy as the darkness prevailed before my eyes, spinning the world around its axis. But I didn’t give a damn to my weakness and vented out my frustration. “This work arrangement is just an excuse to see me dying before you. You want me dead, just admit it, Alpha Vincenzo.” Vincenzo’s jaw clenched as he looked pained, barely keeping it together. His blue eyes glowed crimson as his wolf pushed forward in rage. But before he could admit, my knees buckled, making me lose my balance. Vincenzo rushed to support me as I fell into his arms helplessly. “Calm down, Ash. It’s not good for your health.” He whispered against my hairs, pulling me closer to his chest. I squirmed in his hold as the feeble protest, spitting out my hatred as the last thing before the sudden wave of relief lulled me to sleep. “I hate you, Vincenzo!” ... “You are a liability, Ashley. I can’t risk my pack for a mere mate!” The flashback of my rejection haunted me in my dreams, not letting me sleep peacefully. I was jolted awake by the searing pain of rejection cutting through my heart. My body felt heavier, as I couldn’t move, paralyzed in the bed. It wasn’t just fatigue, but the stabbing pain in every bone of my body, tearing me apart. My chest was so tight, suffocating me. I could see Ivory curling in a corner, fading. “Ivory!” Panic creeped in as tried to shift, just to feel her presence. But a solemn voice resounding in my ears stopped me. “Don’t. Let her rest.” I turned my head and gasped, missing out on breathing. Vincenzo, lying on my right side, leapt my heart to my throat as he spoke softly. “Ash, I don’t want you dead!”Ashley’s P.O.V.Blinking slowly, my grip on my phone tightened as I replied to Cassidy.“It was given to me.”“Oh, really?” She drew a slow step closer, her heels crunching against the gravel.“Who is so interested in you to give such an expensive phone?”Cassidy’s shrill voice dripped with disbelief and something colder. She took a closer look at my phone and gasped.“That’s Vin’s model! The same one he bought a week ago. You, liar! How dare you steal from him?”Her audacity to call me a thief shattered my obedient façade. That accusation hit me like a slap, sharp and humiliating.“I didn’t steal anything. He gave it to me.”Cassidy’s laugh was soft and scornful in response. “Right. Alpha Vincenzo handed over his personal phone to a lowly maid. What a convincing story.”She raised her brow. “Maybe you are forgetting your place, Ashley. Vincenzo has important things to focus on, and you are clinging to him with your fake ailment and puppy doe eyes.Don’t think we aren’t s
Ashley’s P.O.V.Slowly melting under the heat of anticipation, I was about to lose myself in the temptation when the sharp chime of the cell phone shattered the silence like a slap, breaking my trance. This loud tone was enough to yank me back to reality. My eyes flew open as I gawked at Vincenzo. This sudden interruption made him still, catching his breath. He was already pulling away when I finally got a hold of my emotions. The moment was gone! The phone rang again, vibrating angrily in his pocket like the universe had snapped the thread we were both dangling from!Vincenzo stepped back, just one step, but it felt like a mile. Ivory squirmed inside me as he said, voice low and conflicted.“I need to take this.”I nodded, unable to speak. My chest rose and fell rapidly as if trying to catch what had slipped through my fingers just now. Vincenzo hesitated for a bit, like he wanted to say something. But his hesitation evaporated into thin air as he saw the caller ID on his p
Ashley’s P.O.V.Startled by the sudden presence in the room, my head jerked up as my hands wiped at my face too late. I hadn’t expected that Vincenzo would even bother to come here.He stood in the doorway, shadowed by the dimming light behind him. The indifference was etched on his cold face, but his eyes. Those fiery emerald orbs were fixed on me, glaring hard at me. I quickly averted my face, ashamed of being caught like this. Vulnerable and crying weren’t the words I ever liked to associate with my name.“I wasn’t hungry.” Speaking hoarsely, I stood up to greet Lilly as hopped on the floor, running towards her spot. However, my answer failed to please Vincenzo. He stepped inside, closing the door with a soft thud.“That’s not an answer! You have to eat, Ashley Miller!”Whenever Vincenzo was angry, he would call a person by his full name, giving him a chance to submit or run for his life. So, I stayed silent as he grabbed my wrist and dragged me to the mirror.“Have you se
Ashley’s P.O.V.I stood there frozen, the hallway air turning colder around me despite the warmth of Lilly against my heart. The scene before me slit through the fog of the night before like a blade as she placed her hand on Vincenzo’s shoulder. I saw her fingers; I saw the way Vincenzo didn’t shrug it off. He lifted his gaze, calm and composed, reaching for the cup she placed. Something paused in my chest as that girl, no Cassidy Garrison, leaned in closer. Her glossy lips parted in a smile that could have been carved from poison-tipped roses.“I asked the kitchen to add cinnamon.” She purred, “I know how you like your morning coffee, Vin!”Vincenzo glanced at her. “Thank you!”Sitting in a pleasant atmosphere, Vincenzo, Luna Rose, and Cassidy were enjoying breakfast, chattering happily. Rose was extra-sweet with Cassidy like she was her most precious possession. However, my world was in chaos, pushing me back into the dark pit of the past. I tried to climb out of it, but my d
Ashley’s P.O.V.“What?”I stumbled a step backwards as an involuntary gasp spilled my lips. Vincenzo’s bizarre command shifted the ground below me. Wrapping my arms around my body protectively, I asked him.“Why are you giving me such an odd order?”Standing beside the window, Vincenzo was here like he had every right to be. He stuffed his hands in his pockets and turned his head towards me, appearing perplexed.“It’s simple. What’s wrong with my command?”Goddess, how could he say that with a straight face?Taking a deep breath, I tried to calm my racing heart. It was so difficult to point out the obvious for more elaboration.“You are ... asking me to strip? Why?”Vincenzo raised his brow. “So, what? Do you shower with your clothes on?”Well, it was my turn to be hell embarrassed as his statement jogged my memory.“You need to take a medicinal bath daily before bed. Don’t you remember what’s written on the prescription?”My cheeks burned as I lowered my head, hiding my s
Ashley’s P.O.V.Under the heat of Vincenzo’s intense gaze, I found myself at a loss for words as my tongue felt heavy against the roof of my mouth. My eyes were fixed on his hand, a few inches away from my face. The small hair on the back of my neck rose, anticipating his next move.I couldn’t even lower my head to show submission!A devilish smirk curled into his lips as, at the last moment, Vincenzo shifted his gaze to Lilly, his hand sinking into her soft fur. He scratched behind her ears like he used to, drawing out a pleasant purr from her and a quiet breath I didn’t realize I was holding until now.The glee was evident from the dimples forming in his cheeks as he said. “Lilly is in good hands!”Then, without another word, he turned and strode from the room, his footsteps echoing in the hallway. I was left standing there, pulse racing frantically. His warmth still clinging to my skin like a secret, calming a part of my soul. Ivory sighed in relief.“I am feeling better, A
Ashley’s P.O.V.The sharpness of that feminine voice cut through my heart, but I didn’t have to turn to recognize her. Vincenzo got up right away, lowering his head a bit.“Good morning, mom.”Rose Anderson, Vincenzo’s mother, and the Luna of the Eastern Garden’s Pack stood in the doorway, dressed in slate-gray silk. Her mouth curled in a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. She moved into the dining room like a queen returning to court. Her gaze flicked to Lilly in Vincenzo’s arm, then to me, lingering with disdain.“I should have known that you’d find your way back, like a weed between cracks.”Rose’s voice was smooth, yet her each word was a needle stabbing in my chest. As she didn’t consider her son’s greetings and addressed me directly, I straightened my spine.“I am only a maid here, Luna.”Rose laughed, soft and bitter. “Is that what you guys are calling it now?”She stepped closer, narrowing her eyes. “You were rejected and banished, Ashley Miller. This mansion, this pack
Ashley’s P.O.V.Jenna parted her lips to answer, but before she could say anything, a sharp voice cut through the air like claws on glass.“Don’t flatter yourself, Ashley.” Martha, the head maid, sneered. “You think Alpha is out here, sending pills to his traitor ex-mate?”I didn’t know when Martha came and started eavesdropping on our conversation. But she was hell pissed. She emphasized on her words like venom on her tongue.“Stop pretending that you are a Luna and focus on your work. Food isn’t free here!”My chest tightened as tears burned in my eyes. The humiliation of being a pack traitor was back to smack me hard. However, I didn’t have any choice as a maid in Anderson’s mansion. I guess it was my fate now.Swallowing the bitter taste of shame, I picked the duster and started cleaning, pleasing Martha. She flashed a satisfied smirk and walked off, her heels clicking against the marble floor.Jenna grabbed my hand, pausing me mid-cleaning. “Ash, what was she talking about
Ashley's P.O.V. The honesty of Vincenzo’s tone directly hit my heart. But I couldn’t react to this unexpected situation as the cold seeping through my fevered skin made me shiver. My every nerve felt raw, as if I had been dragged naked over the snow. Desperate for a moment of relief, I curled closer to the heat beside me. A whimper escaped my mouth as I tried to move. Vincenzo saw me struggling and instantly wrapped his arm around my waist, careful but firm, grounding me against the storm of pain. His warm scent of pinewood filled my lungs, reminding me of that maddening undertone of musk I had missed for five years. “I am here!” He whispered hoarsely, “I swear I won’t let you go through pain alone.” I let out a breath that shook. “You already did!” The mention of that brutal rejection wasn’t to hurt him, but a reminder to myself that whatever this was, it was dangerous. That breakup had left deep wounds on my soul which would never fully heal. Vincenzo rubbed slow circle
