Ashley’s P.O.V.

I drifted in and out of consciousness, unable to make sense of the voices around me. It was like someone was screaming at the top of his lungs to keep me awake. But the warmth of darkness lured me into sleeping, embracing my wounded existence.

“The patient is weak, malnourished, and traumatized. How is she alive?”

These incoherent murmurs resounded in my ears as I woke up to softness slowly. The smell of medicines and bleach in the air immediately made me aware of my surroundings. I was in the hospital. But how?

The medical facilities were nonexistent in rogue packs; injuries were the sign of weakness there. After years of cold and rot, how could I be in a proper hospital?

My eyelids fluttered, heavy as stone, but the fluorescent light over my face stabbed into my skull like a blade. I jerked up, trying to sit and check my surroundings. But the pain tearing through my bones was sharp enough to make me gasp. My head spun as the pieces of memories came crashing to my mind in bits.

The assault, punishment, attack and ... Vincenzo?

He was back!

The truth of his return bloomed in my chest like poison, overwhelming me. I looked around as the horrifying facts related to his name flipped my heart. But a female in a doctor’s gown placed her hand on my shoulder, gently pushing me down.

“Relax. Don’t move.”

That lady doctor in her late thirties smiled professionally, although her eyes were as cold as steel.

“You are safe here.”

Her assurance made me chuckle, I spoke bitterly.

“Someone like me is never safe!”

The doctor didn’t say anything and checked my vitals with a nurse, busy in her work. So, I asked her for more elaboration.

“Can you please tell me where I am?”

She raised her head and replied sharply. “It’s an emergency room!”

Obviously, it was a hospital ward. But where?

My heart thundered in my ears as the voice in the back of my mind screamed suspicion, alarming me for an unexpected danger. The doctor’s response was the last nail in the coffin and as she spoke.

“You are in the Eastern Gardens Pack’s general hospital. Alpha brought you here!”

What?

The cleanliness, facilities, and a female doctor, I should have guessed it earlier that I was at a proper pack, not some temporary camp for slaves. No one would spend such money for free labor.

However, the mention of the Eastern Garden pack dried the blood coursing through my body, rendering me speechless. My brain was unable to resolve the mystery of why Vincenzo took me here. Wasn’t he the one who banished me from my homeland, disregarding the fact that I was his soulmate, fated to share an eternity with him?

It seemed that the doctor read the queries dancing in my mind and answered them, sparing me from unnecessary trouble.

“Rogue King is dead, so Alpha freed all the branded slaves from the rogue pack. From now on, all of them will live in our Enchanted Gardens pack.”

She made it crystal clear that I wasn’t a special case, and if it wasn’t for other pitiful slaves’ suffering, he would never let me step on his land. Well, I was also not interested in staying in the pack of my ex-mate. Anywhere else would be better than his charity.

Thinking about him, my heart stuttered, pounding against my rib cage. As Ivory also woke up, I could feel Vincenzo’s presence, like an old wound aching badly. It was a new addition to my agony, worsening it with every passing second.

But one thing was confirmed: I wanted nothing to do with Vincenzo any longer. He was the only man I swore to loathe!

Removing the quilt from my body, I pulled the IVs from my hands to leave. But that doctor stopped me.

“The doctors’ panel is here with your test results.”

A team of experienced professionals arrived and greeted the lady doctor. They discussed my case like I wasn’t in the room.

“A twenty-three-year-old female was brought to the ER for a brand wound on her back and several silver burns. She is anemic ...”

Dr. Thomas described my condition using complex medical terms, running me out of patience. I cut him off.

“I am aware of what’s wrong with me. Thank you so much.”

Judging from the doctors’ cold behavior, it dawned on me that nothing had changed in this pack in five years. They still hated the traitor who betrayed the pack.

So, there was no need to stay here and create more problems for them. They weren’t obliged to heal criminals.

I sat up and swung my legs down the bed to stand up, ignoring the pain in my body. But Dr. Thomas’s voice froze me to my spot.

“You need to hear my recent diagnosis. It’s related to your rejection half a decade ago.”

He threw my world into chaos with his statement. “You have been suffering from a rare disease tied to the severed bond, Ashley. We have only read about it in the history books, but you are the first case I am seeing in my career.

In simple words, what you have is a weakening at the cellular level. Your body cells are decaying with no considerable amount of new cell’s production.”

Ivory lost her ability to shift after the rejection, becoming a dormant wolf. And life in the rogue pack was so tough that I couldn’t pay attention to anything besides survival.

My blood ran cold as he explained the reason for my illness and reached the treatment plan,

“Normally, a bond is ended after or before completing the marking ritual, severing the red threads of destiny. But your case is unique.

Only Alpha marked you and then rejection happened, defying the laws of nature. So, this odd disease has turned your wolf into a clawless kitten.

You need to return to your Alpha mate and stay with him to complete the bond; otherwise ...”

“What?”

An involuntary scream escaped my mouth as I shouted. “What kind of remedy is this? Aren’t you a doctor?

You know what, leave it!

I will continue to live like before.”

Five years had passed, and I was alive, so this disease didn’t sound as deadly to me. But Dr. Thomas’ serious response took me by surprise.

“If you don’t go back to your mate, I am afraid you have only six months to live.”

The news of my approaching death sent shivers down my spine, knotting my stomach. Shaking my head, I cursed my dark fate.

“So, I would die without Vincenzo? Perfect!”

The bond which had thrown my world into chaos was back to smack me hard on my face. No one would be unluckier than me in this entire world. Instead of getting a chance to start my new life, I was yanked to my painful past, sprinkling pepper on the lacerations deep on my soul. It was impossible for me to even imagine living in Vincenzo’s pack after everything.

No!

I had to do something before it was too late!

Taking a deep breath, I calmed my racing heart and faced the doctors. My teary voice sounded shakier than I intended it to be, as I requested.

“Please do me a favor and don’t inform your Alpha about it. I can’t ...”

But before I could plead for their mercy, the door was flung open, assaulting my senses with the mouthwatering scent of pinewood. My heart stumbled over its rhythm as Vincenzo’s mighty figure appeared before my sight.

His burning glare was fixed on me as he commanded.

“What are you trying to hide from me?”

I hadn’t expected that Vincenzo would even bother to come here.He stood in the doorway, shadowed by the dimming light behind him. The indifference was etched on his cold face, but his eyes. Those fiery emerald orbs were fixed on me, glaring hard at me. I quickly averted my face, ashamed of being caught like this. Vulnerable and crying weren’t the words I ever liked to associate with my name.“I wasn’t hungry.” Speaking hoarsely, I stood up to greet Lilly as hopped on the floor, running towards her spot. However, my answer failed to please Vincenzo. He stepped inside, closing the door with a soft thud.“That’s not an answer! You have to eat, Ashley Miller!”Whenever Vincenzo was angry, he would call a person by his full name, giving him a chance to submit or run for his life. So, I stayed silent as he grabbed my wrist and dragged me to the mirror.“Have you se

Ashley’s P.O.V.I stood there frozen, the hallway air turning colder around me despite the warmth of Lilly against my heart. The scene before me slit through the fog of the night before like a blade as she placed her hand on Vincenzo’s shoulder. I saw her fingers; I saw the way Vincenzo didn’t shrug it off. He lifted his gaze, calm and composed, reaching for the cup she placed. Something paused in my chest as that girl, no Cassidy Garrison, leaned in closer. Her glossy lips parted in a smile that could have been carved from poison-tipped roses.“I asked the kitchen to add cinnamon.” She purred, “I know how you like your morning coffee, Vin!”Vincenzo glanced at her. “Thank you!”Sitting in a pleasant atmosphere, Vincenzo, Luna Rose, and Cassidy were enjoying breakfast, chattering happily. Rose was extra-sweet with Cassidy like she was her most precious possession. However, my world was in chaos, pushing me back into the dark pit of the past. I tried to climb out of it, but my d

Wrapping my arms around my body protectively, I asked him.“Why are you giving me such an odd order?”Standing beside the window, Vincenzo was here like he had every right to be. He stuffed his hands in his pockets and turned his head towards me, appearing perplexed.“It’s simple. What’s wrong with my command?”Goddess, how could he say that with a straight face?Taking a deep breath, I tried to calm my racing heart. It was so difficult to point out the obvious for more elaboration.“You are ... asking me to strip? Why?”Vincenzo raised his brow. “So, what? Do you shower with your clothes on?”Well, it was my turn to be hell embarrassed as his statement jogged my memory.“You need to take a medicinal bath daily before bed. Don’t you remember what’s written on the prescription?”My cheeks burned as I lowered my head, hiding my s

My eyes were fixed on his hand, a few inches away from my face. The small hair on the back of my neck rose, anticipating his next move.I couldn’t even lower my head to show submission!A devilish smirk curled into his lips as, at the last moment, Vincenzo shifted his gaze to Lilly, his hand sinking into her soft fur. He scratched behind her ears like he used to, drawing out a pleasant purr from her and a quiet breath I didn’t realize I was holding until now.The glee was evident from the dimples forming in his cheeks as he said. “Lilly is in good hands!”Then, without another word, he turned and strode from the room, his footsteps echoing in the hallway. I was left standing there, pulse racing frantically. His warmth still clinging to my skin like a secret, calming a part of my soul. Ivory sighed in relief.“I am feeling better, A

Ashley’s P.O.V.The sharpness of that feminine voice cut through my heart, but I didn’t have to turn to recognize her. Vincenzo got up right away, lowering his head a bit.“Good morning, mom.”Rose Anderson, Vincenzo’s mother, and the Luna of the Eastern Garden’s Pack stood in the doorway, dressed in slate-gray silk. Her mouth curled in a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. She moved into the dining room like a queen returning to court. Her gaze flicked to Lilly in Vincenzo’s arm, then to me, lingering with disdain.“I should have known that you’d find your way back, like a weed between cracks.”Rose’s voice was smooth, yet her each word was a needle stabbing in my chest. As she didn’t consider her son’s greetings and addressed me directly, I straightened my spine.“I am only a maid here, Luna.”Rose laughed, soft and bitter. “Is that what you guys are calling it now?”She stepped closer, narrowing her eyes. “You were rejected and banished, Ashley Miller. Ashley’s P.O.V.Jenna parted her lips to answer, but before she could say anything, a sharp voice cut through the air like claws on glass.“Don’t flatter yourself, Ashley.” Martha, the head maid, sneered. “You think Alpha is out here, sending pills to his traitor ex-mate?”I didn’t know when Martha came and started eavesdropping on our conversation. But she was hell pissed. She emphasized on her words like venom on her tongue.“Stop pretending that you are a Luna and focus on your work. Food isn’t free here!”My chest tightened as tears burned in my eyes. The humiliation of being a pack traitor was back to smack me hard. However, I didn’t have any choice as a maid in Anderson’s mansion. I guess it was my fate now.Swallowing the bitter taste of shame, I picked the duster and started cleaning, pleasing Martha. She flashed a satisfied smirk and walked off, her heels clicking against the marble floor.Jenna grabbed my hand, pausing me mid-cleaning. “Ash, what was she talking about

Ashley's P.O.V. The honesty of Vincenzo’s tone directly hit my heart. But I couldn’t react to this unexpected situation as the cold seeping through my fevered skin made me shiver. My every nerve felt raw, as if I had been dragged naked over the snow. Desperate for a moment of relief, I curled closer to the heat beside me. A whimper escaped my mouth as I tried to move. Vincenzo saw me struggling and instantly wrapped his arm around my waist, careful but firm, grounding me against the storm of pain. His warm scent of pinewood filled my lungs, reminding me of that maddening undertone of musk I had missed for five years. “I am here!” He whispered hoarsely, “I swear I won’t let you go through pain alone.” I let out a breath that shook. “You already did!” The mention of that brutal rejection wasn’t to hurt him, but a reminder to myself that whatever this was, it was dangerous. That breakup had left deep wounds on my soul which would never fully heal. Vincenzo rubbed slow circle

Ashley’s P.O.V.“I am the Alpha here. Every matter should be reported to me!”Standing tall in his Alpha glory, Vincenzo let out a loud growl, thickening the air with his dominant aura. It was like the room itself recoiled at his existence as he snatched the file from Dr. Thomas’s hand.“Alpha, we were about to inform you after checking on her. She is ...”He tried to explain, but Vincenzo raised his hand, silencing him. The room was engulfed by the deafening silence as I could hear my own frantic heartbeat drumming in my ears. I stared at Vincenzo in a catatonic stupor and prepared myself for the inevitable, enduring the unbearable pain in my body. My fate was in the hands of the overbearing Alpha in front of me.
