Chapter four
ALESSIA'S POV "The High King wants us in his territory." Thompson sounded as though he just won the lottery. My heart leapt out of my mouth. "Mom!" Adrian jumped from his seat with his shirt damped with the orange juice I subconsciously spilled on him from the glass I was pouring his juice into. I was too ashen, too shaken to understand what exactly Thompson meant by 'us'. "I'll clean up and get you another shirt." I stammered, practically scurrying off the kitchen and didn't stop until I was safe behind my bedroom closed door. This couldn't be. It had been three days now since the party. I thought the Lycan King had finally received some senses and chose to let me be. But it seems I was wrong, he had sworn to make me his. It was terrifying, the lust in his gaze terrified and haunted my sleeps. The words he'd spoken that night were on constant replay in my head, they had the worst effect on me. Oh Goddess save me! I had heard of and judged adulterous women. Now, I was drawn to the thin line between remaining faithful to my husband or giving into this heat. I couldn't go to his territory. Breathe in. Breathe out. I slowly worked on my breathing, focusing on the things in my room to keep the enigmatic Lycan off my mind. But it wasn't working. I walked to the window, to get some air on my face in a sick attempt of dousing the heat inside of me. It was just a matter of time then whatever this was would fade off. Yielding was never an option. I loved Thompson and even though he'd betrayed me by bringing home another woman four years ago, I never would betray him this way. I loved him. I loved my husband. "I'm married to Thompson, I love him. I only desire my husband..." I repeated to myself, but I nearly jumped when I turned to see Thompson staring at me with furrowed brows in the middle of my room. Did he creep up on me? I didn't think so. My mind was hazy with the thoughts of a man that could never be mine, my body reacting to a kiss that never happened. This undeniably happened only because Thompson and I hadn't made love since the morning Adrian turned three and Annalise was out of town for about two weeks. Those two weeks remained untainted in my memory. "You don't act yourself for days now. Are you sick?" Thompson threw at me. Thompson never cared about my wellbeing, but having him speak this softly to me brought a sheer sense of joy to my heart. It gave me the boldness to venture to where he stood by my big bed, wrapped my hands around him and got on my tippy toes just so our heights could match. But he pulled away before our lips could seal. "You sicken me, Alessia." His tone was quiet, "You know I never wanted you from the get go." "But I've always loved you." I sniffled, battling the tears that pooled in my eyes and the frustration gnawing my soul. "C'mon, you don't expect me to betray my mate yet again? I've done it once but it's not happening again... " "I am your wife!" I yelled as though to get some sense into him, "I'm not against you being with you mate all I'm saying is that..." He flailed his hand in the air forcing me to go instantly silent. "It's never easy to cheat on a mate," He paused only to chuckle, "That's something your pathetic life will never get to experience because I doubt if any man would ever want you." "Don't say that to me! I don't want them, I'm happy and content with you." My voice wobbled. "With a body like that, I don't doubt that. I hate to think I'll be going to meet and dine with the Lycan King with you." I hated to think that he was right after all, no man ever paid any attention my way. Well, except the Lycan king. "It's fine. You can take your mate. Not like I care about any of this stuff." I snapped. My indifference deflated his ego and seemed to ignite his rage. His face hardened, an air of warning settled around him, his muscles clenching visibly made me instantly back away. "We're leaving tonight. Pack your bags." "I have a son to raise, I just can't fit into this mold any longer. Take your mate with you, Annalise wants this. If you so much love her the way you claim then take her with you and let me be!" Tears streamed down my face. There were no chances of me going off to Lycan King’s territory when the signs were there that he only wanted to lure me into his bed. And worst, I couldn't even tell Thompson I'd found my mate and he was the Lycan king, reasons why he shouldn't let me off. Thompson's brain was wired differently, he could turn this around and blame me for the things I had no control over. Annalise was now at the table when I returned from the room, with her daughter Liah who would be turning four in a few more months. "Good morning, Mum Alessia," Liah offered me an infectious smile, "Can I please get some blueberries on my pancakes today?" "Mom, my shirt." Adrian whined. We had no domestic staff around here, I was in charge of cooking, scrubbing, laundry and babysitting our kids. Although it could be tiring, I never complained even when Annalise lazed away all day, nagged me about not feeding her daughter on time and left her clothes for me to wash. I did them all because I loved Thompson and wanted to be productive in his household. I got Adrian a shirt to change into, surprised Liah with the smiley face I crafted on her pancakes with blueberries, her favorite. Her smiles lit me up. "I'm coming along this time right?" Annalise asked when Thompson joined the table. "There's only room for two." "I don't see the problem." She fluttered her thick lashes to me, "She can take care of Liah while I'm gone." "I'm absolutely cool with that." I offered her a sweet smile. Thompson slammed his hand on the table, "I've hired a housekeeper to cook and clean and babysit while we're gone. The Lycan king specifically stated Alessia Keith.’’ All the lights left my vision. This was a joke. How could he not have suspected something was fishy? "How strange!" Annalise gaze darted to me. "Why does the Lycan King want me over?" I asked breathlessly, wanting to find out if he told Thompson about being my mate. "You don't imagine he would risk words spreading? But he's offering fifty million dollars if all goes as he plans." "He's buying me off?" Dread filled and clipped my words. Thompson and his mate regarded me as though I had lost my mind. Well, maybe I did. "I'll check and refill the juice." I left to the kitchen, bile rising in the pit of my stomach. What exactly did this brute Lycan ruler want from me?The mistake I made was not rejecting him on the spot. Maybe walking straight into his Kingdom, rejecting him and returning wasn't such a terrible thing to do. But I couldn't leave my son with some stranger, especially with his stepmother. "I'm sorry I'm forcing this on you." Thompson stood behind me in the kitchen after dinner was over and I was cleaning up after myself, "I've canceled over an excuse you got the flu." My gaze left the dishwasher to his sober face. He would do that for me? Two weeks went by and I heard nothing about the Lycan king or the trip to his Kingdom. The budding hunger and the heat slowly fading. Thompson paid more attention to the things I did lately and seemed to act nicely towards me, although keeping his distance. That night, he made a glass of green juice and talked casually about my father, for once, in a nice way. It was all I remembered of that night until I woke up the next morning in a bright and vast room. Nothing in the room to suggest I was home. I swung to my feet and darted to the window and the opulent view struck me dumbfounded. Just then, my husband came into the room from the connecting door, a broad smile on his face and a heavy towel around his waist, his hair wet and spiky from the shower. I ogled his way, my gaze tracing his tanned waistlines. Did we...? I searched myself, nothing to suggest we'd made love the previous night. Whatever it was, we were together in the nicely furnished hotel room. "You slept in. You made me worried that we might be late." His smiles brightened my morning. How I loved this man. "Late for?" I yawned and rubbed my eyes wearily. "Breakfast with Lycan Cyril." Thompson blurted out. What the hell? There was no way I heard him right. But, "We're in his kingdom and we must abide by his rules." He added. I froze. Did Thompson know the implications of what he'd just done?Chapter 73Alessia's pov I looked at my image in the mirror, my poor frame looked so hopeless and lost. Lost in the uncertainty of my impending fate. Hedges had called, asking us over to the Alpha's aboard after close to two hours of waiting. He'd sounded neutral on the call, so it was impossible to dictate what consequences awaited us. Ophelia's figure crossing the mirror pulled me back to consciousness, and I turned to meet her gaze on me. ‘‘You will be fine, trust me. Hedges isn't bad as he may have seemed.’’ She tried comforting me. “Let's get going.’’ Lady Amora showed up. Ma'am Amira was already out waiting, but she wasn't going with us to the Alpha. She'd drop by at the family store while we went, and Ophelia was to join her afterwards. We arrived at the compound and we were led to the waiting venue; under a shade of trees somewhere around the side of the Alpha's portable duplex. Soon, a man came to call on us. They led us into the main building, and I suspected we were
Chapter 72Alessia's povI opened my eyes to meet Ophelia standing before me. She jerked slightly, like my consciousness had scared her. “Y-you are up….’’I refused a word, trailing my eyes around the room for nothing in particular. It was still vivid in my memory, all the revelations of Ma'am Amira and the scary truth behind my connection with the lycans. My gaze flailed back to Ophelia, and she stepped back oddly. “What is the matter with you?’’ I threw at her, unable to overlook her weird attitude.‘’I..uh… Hedges.’’ She paused a bit. ‘’Hedges returned.’’I immediately knew who she was talking about but what has that gotten to do with me?“I'm sorry, Alessia. I didn't mean to do it. I was just too excited it slipped off my lips.’’ She mumbled, though in a fairly audible voice. I couldn't make out the least of what she spoke about. Though it agitated my emotions, I managed to keep still with a straight face.‘‘What have you done?’’ I inquired, my pulse escalating as anticipatio
Chapter 71Alessia's pov I must have zoned out again. Fingers snapped in my face, undoubtedly belonging to Ophelia. “What again?’’ She whined, taking a seat beside me on the wooden bench. “I keep getting this weird feeling, like something isn't right. And it's not always a flop each time I feel like this.’’ I expressed my sincere thought.I could no longer hide it. My heart panicked for some reason, and my mind had refused to leave home. Did something go wrong? Are the kids fine? Those questions persisted in my mind all morning. “Why did you refused to go and see the Alpha?’’ Ophelia questioned suddenly, taking me by a bit of surprise. “I-I mean….is it so important that I see him?’’“Yes it is. But I need to know how important your reason might be first.’’ She answered, throwing such an intense stare at me like I was some criminal in disguise. “Thompson. I'm sure he's been searching for me already. He might eventually find me if his inquiries reaches your Alpha.’’ I lifted my g
Chapter 70Thompson's povI limped my way through the quiet dark roads, watching my back at intervals as I tugged my injured leg along. A grunt escaped my lips as I settled by an empty barn. With heavy breaths breezing off my nostrils, I searched for any phone and dialed Regal. “Cover up for him. Move over there and get on your bellies.’’ He yelled over the phone as the line connected. ‘‘I've been shot.’’ I said, snapping his attention immediately. ‘‘What?’’“I'm on my way back to the house now, but it seems it's still quite a distance away.’’ I complained bitterly, pain stretching intensely through my leg bone. The house was still about twenty meters away. There was no fucking way I could get home on my own, not with the amount of bleeding pouring from my injured leg. ‘‘Where are you right now?’’ Regal inquired. I turned over, trailing my gaze around the darkness of the unfamiliar space. Undoubtedly, it wouldn't have been possible for me to recognise the area in the day, not
GETTING RID OF THE PESTThird person's pov Thompson stood by Adrian's bed, tucking the sheets properly around the sleeping lad. His face beamed crimson with sticky lashes proving evidence that the poor lad had been in tears recently. Finishing up, Thompson swatted one last glance at Adrian's sleepy face, a frustrated sigh leaving his lips. He's had to deal with Adrian's whining over Alessia's absence for the last few hours. Two days had passed already, yet no news of Alessia's whereabouts. Adrian got discharged from the hospital the very day Thompson heard about Alessia's visit to the hospital two days ago, and it hadn't been easy handling him. Annalise wasn't any help. She openly neglects tending to Adrian's needs and gaslights Thompson each time he tries confronting her over it. Of course Emelda was still kept under hostage and couldn't help with Adrian either, leaving Thompson the whole responsibility to handle. Clearing jab from his throat, Thompson turned and headed out. No
Chapter 69Alessia's pov My eyes darted to Lady Amora, widened with shock and fright at Ophelia's somewhat scathing report.“Oh, did he?’’ Lady Amora simply asked, calm and nearly nonchalant. “What message is it?’’ I inquired impatiently. All my time, I've had to deal with Alpha's up until recently. I couldn't afford another Alpha related drama, not just now when things seemed to have gotten a little better with my life. “Oh, he requests to see you when you're awake. It's just for formalities. We have explained to him already the daughter of whom you are.’’ Lady Amora responded in a suiting manner. In all sincerity, her softness was supposed to calm my nerves but it did little to nothing since my brain calculated faster than the seconds. “Let's get you dressed….’’“Can you not tell him I'm awake yet?’’ I interrupted. Desperate. “Huh?’’ Ophelia tuned. “I'm sure Thompson must have herded a search for me. If the Alpha discovers details of me, that'll mean an increased chance of T
Chapter 68Alessia's pov “What's with you ladies?’’ Lady Amora spoke up after moments of observing the aura in the atmosphere. Her eyes darting from me to Ophelia at intervals. “Uh…it's nothing. We were just…just uh….’’ Ophelia fumbled. “When you said this was my mother's land, what did you mean?’’ I threw the question, my gaze planted fixedly on Lady Amora. Ophelia's words were messing with my head. My mother's name was indeed Allora, but I never heard about her family. Probably because she died in my early days, my father never mentioned them and they never showed up for a visit on any occasion. I was forced into believing she had none. I watched lady Amora swat a glance at Ophelia who totally avoided looking her way. A sigh breezed off her lips and she kicked her way towards me. “How do you feel?’’ She beamed. I couldn't believe my ears, but I chose to swallow down my reproach and nodded instead. “That's a relief.’’ She breathed, letting silence take over. “Um… I should ta
Chapter 66CYRIL’S POV “What the hell are you talking about, it's been two days already!’’ I snapped into the phone, flames breezing off my nostrils as his reports swirled in my mind for the settlement I wasn't willing to grant the disappointing news. “Trust me, my king I've been completely active on it.’’ Regal tried to convince me but I wasn't having it. “You haven't. You have been too busy arming your weak men in preparation for an attack but trust me, you won't even see it coming.’’ I sneered with bitterness in my heart, hanging up the call. “He is still yet to find her? I told you not to trust him.’’ Lance whined. He had been watching me all the while I sauntered about on the call with Regal. “Didn't we have more men go in search of her? It's not like I'm depending fully on him.’’ I snapped, not taking his words lightly. A sigh left his lips. “Let's just keep hoping for some news and I really wish you'd calm down during this time.’’ “Where in hell have you gone, Alessia?’
Chapter 65Thompson's pov I watched elder Ralph, Zach, and elder Mayor in nothing but spite and despise. How weak of them. They couldn't even withhold their honour and stand firm in the presence of the lycans. “We can't win against them. It's too dangerous.’’ Elder Zach complaining, wiping his coat. “They are in our land. We can take anything out in our own land.’’ I spat, irritated.“We can't take nothing. The lycans are dangerous. They are currently raiding the whole pack and you speak like that?’’ Ralph rumbled, sounding pissed. “Men are out there fighting back. The fact that neither of you could fight back doesn't make all others a coward!’’ I spewed, my chest flaming madly with rage. “Are you referring to us as cowards right now?’’ He seethed. ‘‘All these isn't necessary right now. Just stop this now before it is too late, alpha.’’ Elder Mayor chirped in. “I agree to that. The Luna, your wife, should be the one responsible for every blames here and not the lycans or the k
