12. The Mission

"Where are you going? Why do you look so presentable this early?" Julian asked when we arrived at the dining room. I had cooked for him, although I didn't know his favorite meal other than a steak, cooked rarely. He sits in a chair and sips his coffee before grabbing one of the waffles.

"I have a little business with Mr. Emerson to take care of some things that my mom and dad entrusted to him," I replied. "Would you like to accompany me?"

Julian, who had been enjoying breakfast, lifted his face and looked at me with a look I didn't understand. "Should I?"

"Yes, I thought you might miss me a little."

Julian snorted. "You mustn't forget, our marriage wasn't based on love. So don't think about it because it will only make me sick!"

He got up, threw his napkin roughly onto the table, and stomped away.

I might not be able to stand Julian's attitude and words, but his refusal to come with me meant I would have more freedom to discover my parents' secret. And... maybe more time with Jude.
