I blink twice.

Then stare at the door for several seconds, incredulous.

I half expect Damon to walk right back in.

He doesn’t.

The fire crackles softly behind me as rain lashes against the cabin walls.

I wait.

And wait.

And wait.

Soon, I can’t sit still anymore.

I have no idea how long Damon has been outside, but it feels too long.

I push myself carefully off the couch, testing my weight against my ankle.

Pain flares immediately. But not nearly as badly as before. Whatever

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Setting sun

AVELINE'S POVI waited.I lowered my knees from beneath my chin and straightened where I sat, watching him closely.Nereth wasn't usually the sort to hesitate. If anything, he spoke with an almost irritating certainty, even when I disagreed with absolutely everything coming out of his mouth.Now...He seemed to be arguing with himself. His gaze wandered toward the forest.Toward the stony slope that disappeared beneath the broken wall.Toward anywhere but me."You've gone quiet," I observed."I have.""That's unlike you.""So I've been told.""By who?"A ghost of a smile touched his lips."Myself."A laugh escaped me before I could stop it."That sounds incredibly lonely.""It can be."The smile faded almost as quickly as it had appeared.Silence settled between us again. For the first time since we'd met, Nereth looked... uncertain. He drew in a slow breath before finally turning to face me."Aveline..."He paused."What I'm about to tell you..."The words trailed off.He stopped.I

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Smoke between my fingers

AVELINE'S POV The more time I spent with him, the more I began to suspect he experienced the world... differently. Not better. Just differently. Once, while we crossed what I was convinced had once been a bustling marketplace according to my latest theory, I paused to admire a great tree whose massive roots had forced their way through solid stone, splitting ancient pavement that must have stood untouched for centuries. "It's beautiful," I had murmured, tracing the rough bark with my fingertips. "It used to be smaller." I looked at him. "...Used to be?" He blinked, as though only then realizing what he had said. "I mean..." He cleared his throat. "...I imagine it used to be." I narrowed my eyes. "That isn't what you said." "No?" "No." "Hm." He looked genuinely thoughtful, almost as though he were replaying the conversation inside his own head. "I suppose it wasn't." I folded my arms. "You say the strangest things." "So I've been told." At the time, I simply assum

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Theory

AVELINE'S POV As I had suspected, there were no beasts stalking the Northern Wilds. It was, for all appearances, no different from every other forest I'd ever explored. I found myself wondering when, how and, more importantly, who had started the rumours about the enormously dangerous creatures said to dwell there. The fact that those rumours had become accepted as undeniable truth fascinated me. They appeared in research texts, educational materials, historical records and countless other sources. Whoever had orchestrated such an elaborate deception had clearly been someone with extraordinary influence. I never encountered any of the beasts of the Northern Wilds. Not once. Just in case my theory proved wrong, however, I remained prepared for an encounter with the creatures so many insisted were real. Three weeks passed. Still nothing. By then, I was almost certain I was right. Everything we knew about the Northern Wilds might have been little more than propaganda, or perhaps

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Secretive

AVELINE'S POV "Which pack are you from?" I'd asked the next day when I stumbled across Nereth again. At the time, I considered it nothing more than an amusing coincidence that he'd somehow ended up at the dying moat, southeast of the collapsing pillar, a little to the right of the watchtower, at the exact place I'd planned to begin that day's exploration. We'd parted ways the previous afternoon without making any plans to meet again. Neither of us had mentioned returning to the Wilds. Yet somehow... There he was. Standing exactly where our paths happened to cross once more. I knew he didn't necessarily have to be from either the Eastern or Western Pack simply because they shared borders with the Northern Wilds. Sirus's coronation had drawn werewolves from nearly every territory. The Eastern Pack had been practically teeming with visitors like myself. Normally, I could identify where someone came from just by listening to them speak. I'd always had a good ear for acc

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Nereth

AVELINE'S POV (Twenty years ago) If someone had told me the greatest mistake of my life would begin with my curiosity, I would have laughed. Now, whenever I look back on those days, I sometimes wonder how different everything might have been if I'd ignored the stories surrounding the Northern Wilds and stayed safely inside the packhouse that morning. If I'd never gone looking for monsters. But I did. And that single decision changed far more than my own life. It put my sister, and eventually everyone I came to care about, directly in the path of a tragedy none of us saw coming. The tales and myths surrounding the Northern Wilds were never as popular in the Winter Pack as they were in the Eastern and Western Packs. That wasn't particularly surprising considering those two territories shared borders with the forest itself, while ours lay comfortably farther away. To most wolves in the Winter Pack, the Wilds were little more than an unsettling story told to reckless childr

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Mourning the living

DAMON'S POV "Why?" The word barely rose above a whisper. It didn't sound like my voice. It sounded like it belonged to the frightened little boy I'd been twelve years ago. Mother flinched. Not visibly enough for anyone else to notice. I noticed. Her lips parted. Then closed again. "I'm sorry." "No." The word left me before I could stop it. "No." My voice was louder this time. Somehow, I found the will to go on. To speak. "That won't work." Silence. The fire crackled quietly behind me. Somewhere outside, water continued to trickle through the stream as though the world hadn't just turned itself inside out. "I'm sorry..." she tried again, her voice barely above a whisper. The female I'd met at the bottom of the ravine, with her fierce composure in the face of those creatures, and the female standing before me now felt like two entirely different people. I still couldn't wrap my head around any of it. Twelve years. Twelve entire years. I laughed. It wasn't amuse

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    The little devil

I open the window, sliding one foot over, then another. My feet land lightly on the carpet, and I smile at the sheer perfection of the action. The lights flick on. I gulp. Talia stands by the switch, arms crossed, her face set in that “I caught you and you’re in trouble” look. Despite the

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    I do not have a weak stomach

I startle at the sound of leaves crunching under boots. “Who’s there?” “Mia? Is that you?” I turn to find Cole picking his way toward me. “Cole,” I breathe. “How did you—” “I had a feeling they were going to come for you after what you did.” He finally reaches where I’m leaning against a t

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Catch her

My screams does not deter him. Oh no. “Don’t—” I start. He lunges again. Below me, the group spreads out in a perfect semicircle. Waiting. “Catch her,” I recall Damon’s words. He plans to force me out if this tree, I realize. Panic claws at my lungs as I adjust myself on the branches so I c

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    You are not the boss of me

Rule number one for anyone living in a werewolf pack—especially if that person is human: Never humiliate the future Alpha. Rule number two? If you do, don’t get caught. I broke rule number one three hours ago. And right now, I just broke rule number two. “You can run, but you can't hide, h
