ISABELLA

The words floated around until it seized my breath. He’d done what?!

I stared at the building, the implication too heavy to actually believe.

My father’s pack was his pride, he neglected me for it, he didn’t even mourn my mother’s death to avoid looking weak and even died for it.

And Rohan didn’t just destroy his legacy and my whole childhood, he also hid it from me.

“How sure are you of this?” I asked, my hands balling into fists by my side.

“I’m a lot of things, a liar is not one

56ISABELLAI stared at my hands in horror.“No,” I whispered immediately, shaking my head hard. “No, that’s not possible.”The Seer looked exhausted.Far more exhausted than she had moments ago.“It is.”I pushed myself up too quickly, panic clawing through my chest again. “How would my powers even do that?”The Seer steadied me before I could stumble backward.“Easy,” she muttered darkly. “You were never meant to exist.”The words sent a cold chill racing down my spine.I stared at her.“What does that mean?”She released a tired breath before slowly lowering herself onto the cracked edge of the fountain.“When we first met,” she began carefully, “I was shocked because your scent made no sense.”My pulse quickened.“You smelled like a wolf,” she continued, “but your magic…” Her pale eyes lifted toward me. “Your magic felt ancient. Witch blood. Strong witch blood.”The world suddenly felt very quiet.“You think I’m…” My throat tightened. “A hybrid?”The Seer rubbed at the bluish vein

55ISABELLA I stared at him, completely lost.Rohan was laughing. Not loudly. Not like something was funny. It was darker than that—low and rough, the sound scraping out of his chest like he couldn’t decide whether to be amused or exhausted.Meanwhile my entire world had just collapsed.I tightened my fingers against my sleeve. “Why are you laughing?”Rohan dragged a hand down his face before looking at me again.“So that’s why you’ve been acting strange.”My brows pulled together immediately.“Strange?” I repeated. “Rohan, this is a mate bond.”The words came out sharper than I intended.A mate bond. Not some tiny inconvenience. Not some awkward misunderstanding. This was fate.Soul deep.Life altering.I rubbed my sweaty palms together awkwardly, suddenly feeling stupid standing there while he looked completely unaffected.“Do you think I’m lying?” I asked quietly.Rohan’s expression shifted slightly. Then he shook his head.“No.”Relief almost came for a split second—Until he con

54ISABELLAThe vision shattered as suddenly as it came.Air slammed back into my lungs.I stumbled backward, nearly dropping the clay pot as the garden snapped back into focus around me. The scent of damp earth and flowers hit me all at once, but my heartbeat was still trapped somewhere inside that memory. The warmth of her hands still lingered against my chest like phantom heat.Lila rushed toward me immediately. “My lady?”I blinked rapidly, trying to steady myself. The Seer didn’t move. She simply watched me with an expression far too unsurprised for my liking.“What… was that?” I whispered. The Seer sighed heavily before lowering herself onto the stone bench nearby.“A vision.”I swallowed hard.“That’s not possible.”“It clearly is.”I stared at her.“She was there,” I said shakily. “My mother was there.”Something flickered across the Seer’s face then.“You’ll get more of them,” she said quietly. The words made my stomach twist.“More?”She nodded once.“The deeper your magic a

53ISABELLA My heart nearly stopped.Ravena’s father stood unbothered near the stone entrance, his sharp eyes locked on the place where the spell had vanished. For one horrible second, nobody spoke. Then the Seer rounded on me.“If you want me to continue teaching you,” she snapped, “then you will do exactly as I say.”Heat rushed into my face immediately.“I was doing exactly what you said,” I shot back, clutching the book tightly against my chest. “I was reading it.”The Seer’s pale eyes narrowed dangerously.“You were reading with intent.”I frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”“You weren’t studying the spell.” She stepped closer, lowering her voice. “You intended to use it.”I opened my mouth, then closed it again.Because she was right.I hadn’t just been curious. The second I saw the bonding spell, desperation had taken over. Some part of me had hoped there was a way to weaken the mate bond before it destroyed whatever sanity I had left. The Seer exhaled sharply through her

52ISABELLA“I was just about to come to you,” I said as they approached. “Rohan invited her to come.” Lila lowered her voice to say.The mate bond reacted instantly, heat curling beneath my ribs like it approved of the information. I hated that my body reacted to him before my mind even caught up.In the background he was this helpful guardian angel. But really saw me as his nemesis. The Seer moved stiffly near the fountain, her milky dress flowing around her thin frame as the morning breeze swept through the courtyard. A rough sack bag hung over one shoulder, clutched tightly in her wrinkled fingers. Her pale eyes darted across the packhouse grounds constantly, like she expected wolves to leap and attack at any second.Honestly, maybe she wasn’t wrong. She looked tense enough to bolt.I walked toward her slowly. “You don’t need to look so worried. This is a safe space.”The Seer frowned so deeply the lines on her face sharpened.“Safe?” she echoed dryly. The way she said the word m

51ISABELLA“I can heal you, it will only take a second,” I said, unable to watch him struggle in pain.“I’d rather suffer than let someone like you touch me,” he spat and I rubbed my temples, feeling a pang there. “You just killed a man without breaking a sweat, isn’t your moral compass off?” I countered.“There’s no way you can compare this to what you did to our baby!” He roared, his eyes glowing dangerously.Subconsciously, I took a step back. And it wasn’t just from fear, but the hurt I could hear in his voice. Maybe the bond between us intensified every emotion. His mind was already made up, hell he would rather be in pain than let me help him though he risked his life to save me.Classic Rohan. A complicated subject.“Thanks for helping.” I said finally, rubbing my wrists where the chains once were.I walked away from him but we were still bonded.I wondered if he felt it too or maybe he was way too angry to feel it.The fantasy of the bond died when I got married. He was my

Why did he look almost… disappointed?“Sir,” I managed, unsure how to address him now.He was still standing at the door, light from the hallway cutti
