Rain sat down with her back against the soft back of the chair. She could see into the distance through the carriage's glass window. There was a very majestic and towering black building in front of her. Moss and vines covered the surface of the black structure almost entirely.
The roof of the building consists of a collection of black domes and a pointed tower at the top. Around the top of the tower that soared into the sky, a thick fog continued to shroud. The dense fog slowly cleared as Rain's horse carriage approached the building.
"Wait, Mr Randall. Is what I see up ahead really our destination?"
"Yes, Miss Orwell. We'll be there in ten… nine… eight…." Randall continued to count down as the horses hooted.
"One!" said Randall at the end of the count when the carriage came to a complete stop.
Rain looked to the left side of the glass window. Dozens of steps lay before her eyes. At the top of the stairs were many giant gray pillars.
Some parts of the pillars looked cracked and chipped. Plants and moss also covered it. Some birds even make nests there.
Behind the rows of pillars was a giant black door that rose high.
"What place is this?" muttered Rain, who was frightened and amazed at the same time.
Rain suddenly trembled. Rain's guts shrunk. She remained seated in the horse-drawn carriage, tightly clutching her travel bag. Rain didn't move or say a word at all.
"We're here, Miss Orwell. Please continue your journey!"
"What? Where to? You're going to leave me here alone, Randall?" Rain protested in a slightly trembling tone.
"My job is done, Miss," answered Randall curtly without showing any expression in his tone.
"Then where should I go?"
Before Randall could answer, the carriage door suddenly opened without anyone touching it. Rain glanced out the door and saw no one there. Rain thought, maybe the carriage door opened and closed automatically with the lever in front of the steering wheel. She had no choice but to get off the horse-drawn carriage. Randall also didn't seem to want to be bothered any longer.
Brack!
Rain gasped and failed to get out of the carriage. The carriage door suddenly closed tightly again. Rain saw a girl coming out of the black door in front of her. The girl looked pale and frightened.
"Wh-who is she, Randall?"
Randall was silent. His pair of eyes reddened without Rain knowing. Randall hissed. "I'm late!"
"What did you say?" asked Rain.
"She's a job candidate who just arrived yesterday afternoon!"
"Why is she running and scared?"
"I don't know..." Randall muttered impatiently.
The girl came down the stairs. The girl paused for a moment beside the horse carriage that Rain was riding. Rain could see the girl's mascara smudging and blackening her cheeks.
Rain and the girl stared at each other wordlessly. The door of the horse carriage only separated their bodies. Rain reached out to the glass window. The girl had run away. Rain turned her head and followed her through the back window of the carriage. The girl ran to the path that Rain had just passed.
"Welcome Miss Orwell!" a woman welcomes.
Rain was surprised. She immediately got off the horse carriage. Rain tripped and almost dropped her travel bag.
An older woman was standing outside the carriage. The woman was wearing a slightly old-fashioned all-black suit. The woman's hair was in a beautiful bun. On the left chest of her coat is a brooch with the initials D made of gold.
"I am Erica Smith, the head of the Dauntees household."
Rain held her hand for a handshake, but she pulled it back again.
Erica greets by folding her right hand to her chest and slightly lowering her head, not a handshake. Rain followed suit by doing the same.
"Rain Orwell!" Rain introduced herself. "Sorry, I barely recognized your voice, Mrs. Erica Smith," Rain said while maintaining her cheerfulness.
Erica stood up straight. She just smiled kindly at Rain. "Yes, I spoke to you on the phone. Follow me!"
Rain walked quickly while tidying her appearance. She was sure her face, hair, and clothes were very messy that morning. As soon as Rain saw Erica's flawless appearance, She became insecure about her appearance.
Erica climbed the stairs, which were enough to make Rain tired. Rain was impressed by Erica's agility.
"Even though Erica was wearing high heels and a tight knee-length skirt, she still managed to climb the stairs with ease. Can I not complain like her?"
Rain looked back when he reached the top of the stairs. Randall's carriage was no longer there. The girl had also disappeared.
"How could that be? I don't hear hoofs or anything! Where is he going?"
Rain walked as she kept thinking about the girl and the horse carriage that had mysteriously disappeared. Suddenly, she bumped into Erica, standing in front of the door.
"Yes, Miss Orwell?" said Erica.
"Oh, sorry, Erica! I must look really careless in front of you." Rain's face paled and panicked.
Erica just kept silent and stood stiffly in front of the black door.
"Before we go in and start all the interview stages, is there something you'd like to say?"
"Yes! Erica, what exactly is this place?"
"That's a question that can't be answered with just one word or one sentence," Erica sighed. "Actually, I already knew you would ask this. Every prospective worker who comes for an interview always asks the same thing. But, I can keep it simple for you."
"And what is it?" investigate Rain.
"You are at the Dauntess residence, in a mountain town called Darkwood to be exact!"
"But, it looks like a black palace, if I may say so."
"This place is indeed known as Darkwood Castle."
Rain felt uncomfortable. However, she held back and showed her best smile in front of Erica.
"Is there anything else you want to ask before we start the job interview?"
"Then, who was the girl who ran away earlier?"
Erica looked into Rain's eyes intently. "If you object and feel uncomfortable, there is still a chance for you to leave here."
"Ah, I..." Rain muttered. "How does she know what I'm thinking?"
Rain was terrified, but she couldn't give up. She needed this job. Primarily, she needed a place to stay. Rain bit her lower lip.
"She's a candidate who failed the interview test!" Erica answered in the end.
Rain sighed. She felt very lucky because the job was not owned by anyone then.
"Umm, fine, when are we going to start the interview?"
"I need to tell you! After going through this door, if you are selected as our employee, then you are not allowed to resign until the employment contract expires."
"What do you mean, we have started doing job interviews?" Rain stammers.
"Yes, of course! Now make your decision. Do you want to move on to the next stage or just stop here? If you object to this interview process, I can ask Randall to drive you back to Westlake Station."
Rain opened her eyes wide and swallowed hard. She stared at the pair of large, black wooden doors in front of her.
"What is behind this door? Why did that girl run scared?"
"Run!" whispered the girl before leaving Rain.
"I can't run," thought Rain as she stood in front of the big black door. "I need this job."Rain's eyes were closed with her hands tightly clenched at her sides. She took a long and deep breath.Erica was still standing beside Rain with a straight and stiff face. Erica urged, "Our time is very tight. You have to do the first test this morning!"Rain's eyes opened. She looked at the black door in front of her again and nodded firmly."I will do it! I have to get this job. Whatever test you will give me, I will do my best!"Erica let out a sigh of relief. Her right-hand moves in a circle beside the body. A thin black smoke floated from the movement of her hand.Rain didn't realize any of that. She was still mesmerized by the maze-like carvings on the surface of the black door. A key that became a pawn among the maze suddenly moved, and the door opened."Wow!" Rain muttered in amazement. "I've never seen anything like this before! Is this the latest security system?"Rain reached out and
Ben had just left the nearest supermarket with two bags of groceries. The tall, blonde-haired youth kept smiling along the way. Just as Ben walked past the cigarette stall, Mrs. Puff greeted him."I feel sorry for you, Benjamin!""Mrs Puff? What are you doing here? Isn't it cold tonight?" Ben tried to make small talk before leaving the woman."Open your eyes, young man!" cried Mrs. Puff after lit a cigarette to her lips. "That little squirrel is just taking advantage of you! Tonight, she may squirm in your arms, but tomorrow she will be curled up under another man's blanket!"Ben's steps suddenly stopped. The smile disappeared entirely from his red lips. Ben squeezed the grocery bag in his hand until his knuckles turned white."Hah! Are you mad at that fact, Benjamin?" Mrs. Puff quipped as she left the cigarette stall.Ben took a deep breath and headed back to his old apartment. He knew Mrs. Puff was trying to make him angry. "Mo-monsters!" Rain screamed, stifled.Mr Dauntess, who Rain had previously thought was a frail older man and would not be able to walk upright, suddenly shifted places in a swift motion. The man was tall and well-built. Rain could tell because the man had no clothes on, trousers too low at his hips."You said I was a monster?" whispered Mr Dauntess in a voice that was very frightening to Rain's ears.Rain stammers. Her body suddenly stiffened, and she couldn't move. A pair of eyes widened with an ashen face. Rain's lips parted slightly. She kept staring at the mirror-like and undead."Aaah...." Rain stammered.Rain's face turned blue. She couldn't breathe. Mr Dauntess strangled her neck from behind.Mr Dauntess's face was right next to Rain's head. Their eyes were fixed on the mirror. Rain and the man looked at each other through the reflection in the mirror."Are you afraid to die?" whispered Dauntess once more. "Or are you afraid to die at my hands?"Rain was still glaring from sho
Rain stood up and touched the door to Jace's room. She was about to turn the doorknob but couldn't. Rain remembered her cell phone running out of battery. She had not even had time to reply to her father's message she received at the station."Looks like it won't be easy. Yes, I should have realized this job would not be easy. Who's willing to pay that much for just a waitress?" grumbled Rain. She paced up and down Jace's door in frustration. At the umpteenth step, Rain stopped. She decided to return to the kitchen and talk to Erica."I can't spend my time here without certainty! I'd better find another job that makes more sense and I can do without leaving campus."Rain returned to the kitchen and found Erica nowhere. She walked around the room and saw no one there.Rain remembered her bag and clothes in the changing room. She returned to the kitchen after wandering around the ground floor. Rain's body was exhausted. The room was too big for her to explore alone. When she returned to
"Your Majesty, you cannot leave the palace at this time! Randall and Erica are not around, don't be provoked by the wolves!" said the wall clock.Jace growled with a pair of fangs sticking out. The black veins all over his body seemed to be more dense and prominent when he was angry. He stood in front of the door to his room, holding a sword firmly in his hand."That girl is here!" said the lampshade. "We don't know what will happen next.""Yeah, it's noon now! Anything can happen, right?" coax a pot of water.Jace's muscles began to loosen. All the furniture there was a little relieved. Jace tilted his head in thought."We are safe in here, Your Majesty!" repeated the old clock. "They won't be able to break through the palace as long as that witch's thorn tree continues to stand there.""And I'll never be able to get out of here without paying a fortune as long as that cursed tree is around!" Jace replied grimly. He tossed the longsword onto the bed and walked restlessly to the windo
Rain bent down and rolled quickly to the ground. At the same time, she grabbed a branch that was strong enough and slashed at the two wolves. The wood tip brushed against the muzzle of one of the wolves. However, the second wolf managed to bite Rain's hand. The girl rolled to the ground, trying to escape the wolf's bite. With her strength, Rain kicked the wolf's stomach until the edge was released. The two wolves backed away in fear. Rain crouched in a standby position. Her hands were oozing fresh blood. Rain's breath was panting with sweat dripping down. The weather was quite cold, but she was sweating profusely. The other wolves were alert and surrounded Rain. Rain was careful with her broken wood."Why are my tears suddenly falling? Why am I crying at a time like this? Is this a sign of death?"Rain couldn't move. She was so scared. Although she mastered taekwondo from her father, her father never taught her to fight five wolves at once. The wolf's movements were bizarre. They seem
"Isn't that a very reckless act, Your Majesty?" Erica hissed. At night, Jace Dauntess has to face the wrath of his icy-faced householder."Erica, you're exaggerating!" Jace protested."This anger is even less than what it should be, Your Majesty!" Erica growled as she folded her arms across her chest. The fire crackled in the tiled stove. The room still harboured traces of the Darkwood Palace's glory—a three-headed eagle of wrought gold, thick carpet, and curtains draped in an abundance of brocade.Erica's complaints were unfinished. She went behind Jace's desk and grabbed the man's hand without permission."This is even worse than I thought!" Erica complained.Jace d
Benjamin kept trying to contact Rain via his cell phone. The last call he made was when he had just arrived at Westlake Station. At that time, Ben could not contact Rain's cell phone. The message he sent was also not read by the girl, let alone replied.Ben walked towards the station exit. As he passed the information board, he quickly grabbed a flyer and a Westlake travel map. Ben approached one of the guards near the entrance. He opened the travel map and showed it to the station attendant."Sir, how do I get to this place?"The station attendant narrowed his eyes and looked Ben up and down. His mouth was constantly chewing gum. The big, fat officer didn't seem to like Ben's question."Are you a tourist?" asked the officer."Yes. I'm on a winter tour —probably," Ben answered hesitantly. The officer continued to chew while squinting. He glanced at Ben suspiciously."The place has long been closed by the local government. No more tourists are allowed to come there. Public transportati
