༺ ELARA ༻

"Can you walk?" he asks.

His voice is rough and impatient, nothing like the one that had grunted dirty praises into my ears just minutes ago.

My mind is still struggling to catch up with what just happened.

“I—I think I’m fine,” I whisper.

The lie trembles between us, and the ache between my legs tells me otherwise. But I don’t think he cares.

My hands are shaking terribly as I fumble with the laces of my dress, trying to tuck myself back into my clothes.

I can’t see properly. Everything is a useless blur of shadows and shapes.

My glasses.

“Where... where are my—” My voice sounds pathetically small and raspy after all the wanton sounds I’d been making in the dark.

I drop to my knees on the frozen ground, scrambling my hands uselessly through dirt and fallen leaves.

A broad shadow steps into my blurred field of vision. Warm, calloused fingers brush mine for a brief, electric second.

“Here. Put them on,” he mutters, pressing the thin wire frames into my hand.

I slide my glasses onto my face. The world snaps back into focus. And so does he.

Darren.

My cheeks burn as I look up at him.

The sting between my thighs flares again, dragging every memory of the last hour screaming back into my mind.

His hands. His mouth. His body against mine. The way he’d said my name. The way I’d—

I swallow hard.

Cheeks flaming, I smile up tentatively at him. But his expression is as cold as ice. The smile dies on my lips, and I flinch.

Something flickers across his face as he stares down at me. It looks like guilt and regret. I don’t know which one hurts more.

Of course, he regrets it. What were you expecting, Elara?

Shame washes over me in hot waves. My eyes burn, and I quickly look away before he can see the tears gathering there.

Think, Elara. Focus on something else.

But I can’t. I’m a mess—shaky, teary. My heart is beating too fast.

So my brain does what it always does in moments of extreme crisis: it cooks up useless facts to keep me grounded.

Fact One: Pressing a human female against a stone pillar in sub-zero Northern weather should induce hypothermia. It does not when the full-grown male wolf crushing her possesses the body heat of a furnace.

Fact Two: Sandalwood and cedar are a devastatingly unfair scent combination for a male who’d given me the cold shoulder for months—and is giving me that same shoulder right now.

Fact Three: My body is still thrumming like a plucked bowstring, aching for a pleasure it has only just discovered.

How in the world had I let this happen?

I know the answer: I am hopelessly infatuated with Darren Iversen, the stoic royal Beta of the North.

The man who barely looks at me twice. The man I have spent far too many nights secretly imagining touching me.

And somehow, tonight, he finally did. But he’s looking at me like I don’t matter.

And as I watch him walk away, I realize a devastating truth: he would never choose a woman like me.

  • Fated to the Grumpy Beta   Chapter Seven:

༺ ELARA ༻ It was just three days at sea, and I had already developed a personal hatred for the ocean. It wastoo fond of throwing perfectly innocent people around for no apparent reason. I was beginning to suspect the waves had something against me. And on top of all that, the tea being served on the ship was disappointingly bland. I stared suspiciously into my cup. “It’s terrible,” I announced to my father, who was seated opposite me at the tiny cabin table, reading through a stack of notes he’d brought from the North. He looked at me over the rim of his spectacles. “The tea?” “Yes.” “But you’ve been drinking it for the past three days.” “I’ve been giving it opportunities to improve, Father.” His mouth twitched. It was the closest thing to a laugh I got out of him when he was absorbed in his work. I took another sip. No change. It was still terrible. I set the cup down and picked up my book. The cabin rocked gently bene

  • Fated to the Grumpy Beta   Chapter Six:

༺ DARREN ༻ "I'm actually concerned about Elara." Luna Sigrun’s light, teasing voice carried through the quiet warmth of the royal nursery. She glanced up at me, and there was a bright, cheeky glint in her eyes. I stood near the hearth, my hands clasped loosely behind my back. A curious feeling passed through my chest at the mention of Elara, but I didn't let a single muscle in my face move. Did Elara tell her what had happened between us? I dismissed the thought. The Luna wouldn't be sitting here smiling at me if she knew what had transpired between her friend and me last night. "Lady Thompson?" I asked, keeping my tone flat and indifferent. "Yes. She came up to my room last night to say goodnight," Luna Sigrun explained, watching me intently. "But she looked shaken up. She claimed she had a sensory migraine from the noise of the feast, but... well, I’m worried. Especially since I got word that she didn’t leave with a guard like I asked her to." Something like pani

  • Fated to the Grumpy Beta   Chapter Five:

༺ ELARA ༻ By the time I reached the Market Square, my legs were numb, my dress was damp from melted snow, and tears were freezing on my cheeks. I pushed through the front door of the bookstore, which doubled as my home, slipping inside and leaning back against the wood, letting out a shuddering breath. "Pet?" a voice called out from behind the counter. My father stepped into the light, holding a brass oil lamp, his traveling cloak still draped over his shoulders. "Father?" I blinked through my blurred vision, hurriedly taking off my glasses to wipe the condensation off on my wet sleeve before shoving them back onto my face. "You're back early. I thought you wouldn’t return until a fortnight." "The roads cleared up faster than expected," he said with a tired, soft smile. He looked exhausted, his face lined and aged by endless weeks of traveling from border to border. He paused, his face shifting into concern as he stared at me. "Are you alright, pet?" I nodded and diverted my ey

  • Fated to the Grumpy Beta   Chapter Four:

༺ ELARA ༻My legs felt like lead as I hurried up the winding stone staircase toward the royal family wing.I kept my chin tucked down, pulling at the frayed neckline of my dress, which I’d finally managed to give some semblance of modesty. My hands still wouldn't stop shaking. The scent of sandalwood and cedar clung stubbornly to my skin, a mocking reminder of my stupidity.Focus, Elara. Just make a polite exit, then run.I reached the double doors of the Royal Nursery and knocked softly before slipping inside. The large room was warm, smelling of jasmine and sweet milk.Sigrun was sitting near the hearth in an oversized robe, gently rocking a swaddled bundle against her chest. Nearby, in a carved wooden bassinet, three-week-old Prince Ronan slept soundly, while Princess Sigrid whimpered softly in her mother's arms. Sigrun’s slender hand was raised over the infant in her arm. A faint, pearlescent shimmer of blue light crackled against her fingertips. The baby let out a tiny sigh of

༺ DARREN ༻Fu.ck.Fu.ck, fu.ck, fu.ck!What in the blasted seven hells have I just done? The heavy doors of the castle’s eastern wing swung shut behind me with a thud. The guards on duty bowed their heads in greeting as I walked past, but I ignored them. Down the long, vaulted corridor, the faint, thunderous sounds of celebration echoed from the Great Hall.I knew I should return to my post at the Alpha’s side. To my duty. But my boots felt as if they were bolted into the flagstones.I couldn’t move.I couldn’t fu.ck.ing breathe.I found an empty alcove and leaned back hard against the stone wall, dragging a hand down my face.I had known the rut was coming. It had been creeping through my veins all evening, threatening to breach my ironclad focus in the middle of the feast. That was why I’d slipped away and walked out into the lower courtyard.I would endure the fever in isolation, the way I mostly did.I was going to grit my teeth and hold back my beast, well out of sight.I was a

  • Fated to the Grumpy Beta   Chapter Two:

༺ ELARA ༻ It was only then that I realized what was happening to him. He was in a rut. My breath stuttered. But before I could even think, his mouth slammed onto mine. A breathless whimper tore from my throat, swallowed completely by his growl as his tongue slid past my lips and tangled with mine. A warm feeling pooled in my belly. My hands instinctively flew up to tangle into his damp hair, holding him closer. His hand dragged up my thigh, gathering the thick wool of my skirts and yanking them up to my waist. The cold wind bit sharply at my bare skin, but the cold vanished the second his calloused palm slapped flat against my inner thigh, forcing my legs wide. In one move, he tore off my underwear. I gasped as his fingers found the damp center of my heat. “Gods, you’re fu.cking wet already,” Darren growled against my ear, his tone slightly surprised as his fingers stroked over me with a rough friction that made my k
