ALFRED POV

“Mate”

The word was a massive shift in my soul. I could sense her faintly, like a delicious pull at the edge of my consciousness. She was here.

Geo, my wolf, didn’t just purr, he slammed against my consciousness, like a beast feeling it’s cage for the first time. ‘Mate! Now!’

“Stop it, Geo! I need to concentrate!” I hissed, and buckled my belt. He snarl was like a physical pain, a sharp pressure behind my eyes. I messaged the sides of my head, as I finally agreed to his whining. “Easy, boy. I feel her too.”

His character is understandable. He had never shown interest in any of the she-wolves I had taken to bed, leaving me to enjoy them with human strength alone. But this… this was different. Her scent—a delicious mix of strawberries and rain, was already seeping into me, like an intoxicating drug. I inhaled deeply with my heart racing. What did she look like? Was her hair as gold as her scent was sweet? I chuckled, feeling like a kid unwrapping a present excitedly, eager to to see what is inside.

I was brought back to reality by my Beta, Andre, as he strolled in holding my spear.

“It’s time, Alpha. Everyone is seated already and your opponents are prepared.”

“Opponents?” I grinned, the predator in me rising to meet Geo’s hunger. “More than one?”

“As you requested. One is a rogue, the other a spy from the High Mountains. A hunter, they say. Brave.”

“Where did you get the rogue from?” I asked, testing my spear.

“He is also a spy, Alpha. Our men caught him last week trying to sneak information through a messenger, the messenger has also been apprehended. They have been in the dungeons ever since.”

“Good. I need a warrior today, not a mouse to squeak and run.” I could feel Geo’s purr of approval. He was not just ready to fight, he was ready to kill, to prove himself to a mate he had not even seen.

The stadium greeted me with cheers and howls as my pack members greeted me excitedly but all I could think of….was the owner of the scent that’s making Geo excited, for he couldn’t wait for the tournament to begin - and end, so he could go find his mate.

The tournament was less a fight and more a slaughter. Geo took control as our body moved with brutal efficiency. The spy, the so called ‘brave hunter,’ lasted only three seconds before my claws tore through his shoulder, and filled the air with the metallic scent of blood. The rogue met a similar fate. It was over in minutes, with two bodies bleeding out in the sand. It did nothing to calm Geo’s restlessness, it only fed it.

“Andre!” I barked. “Get the she-wolf out of my chambers. Now!”

“Ok Alpha. Is everything ok?” He asked.

“I am fine,” I lied, hastening up my pace. “I just need to find what is mine.”

I quickly head to my chambers, to see everywhere clean, tidy and the scent of my love making with the she wolf, cleared. I quickly took my shower, worn my clothes and I was about to bolt out the door when I heard a sound.

I turned back to see Marcus and Andre. Both siting on my couch with a smile on their faces.

“Here here, what do we have here?” Marcus snickered, looking at me with a lopsided grin on his face. “You look like a man running to a fire…or from one.”

Marcus and Andre have been my friends since childhood, their fathers had assisted my father in his royal duties as Beta and head warrior, thereby placing us in each other’s company most of the time, therefore strengthening our bond in the process. Andre, my beta is very calm and collected, unlike my other friend, Marcus, who is very jovial and enjoys a good laugh, making him the clown in the trio. He already found his mate in a beautiful young she wolf called Simeon.

Lucky him!

“I need to go,” I gritted out, as Geo pushes relentlessly around in my subconscious. ‘MATE IS CLOSE!’

“For a walk?” Andre asked calmly.

The truth spilled out. “I think…I have found her. My mate.”

“Really?” Marcus’s eye lit up “What are we waiting for? Let’s go!”

I looked at him hesitantly, I wanted to go find her alone, but knowing Marcus, he won’t budge and I can’t afford to waste anymore time.

I quickly let Geo out and immediately, he took a long sniff, trailing her scent. We ran passed the arena, passed the market square, with her scent getting stronger each minute, till we stopped at the fountain behind the pack’s school, at the end of the town.

And there she was.

Curled on a bench, bathed in moonlight, was a girl with a canopy of golden hair. She looked like a dream, fragile and formless. Geo howled excitedly into the night… a sound of possession, of longing, of home.

She woke up instantly, her eyes wide with terror until they found mine.

*************

Locked in her eyes, stuck on her gaze, I shifted back and held up my hands in a gesture of peace, even as Geo raged to touch her. “Easy boy. You will scare her.”

Her gaze landed behind me to where Andre and Marcus stood silently. “Stay back,” I commanded them without turning around. They obeyed.

I focused on her and saw the fear in her eyes softened into something else…shock, awe. I closed the distance and stretched out my hand. When her small, cool fingers slipped into mine, I felt a jolt of pure energy shot up my arm, silencing Geo for one blissful second.

“I am Alfred Longhorn, Alpha of the East Dwellers Pack.”

She just stared at me with her lips slightly parted, which gave her a dreamy look.

“Oh those lips….Goddess.” I said inwardly as Geo purred.

“My lady,” I said, my voice husky. “A beautiful girl like you should not be out here alone. Be my guest tonight. You have my word, you will be safe.”

She gave a small, hesitant smile and shook her head. No.

My patience evaporated, instantly replaced by a possessive urge to claim what is mine. The Alpha command crept into my voice, like an undeniable growl. “Let me be clear. You are my mate. It is cold. I am tired. And you are coming with me.”

She lifted her chin and raised her huge blue eyes to meet mine with a spark of defiance I had not expected. “No.”

HANNI POV“No, my lady, not so stiffly. The wrist must be soft, like a willow branch, but the spine must be like iron.” Elara, the head maid, adjusted my posture for what felt like the hundredth time. Her fingers deftly secured another Diamond encrusted pin into the elaborate twist of my hair. The gown was a masterpiece of silver and midnight blue, but it felt like a suit of armor.“I feel like I am going to trip over,” I confessed as I stared at my stiff reflection with wide eyes.“You look like you are about to face a firing squad,” a cheerful voice called from the doorway.I turned to see Simone leaning against the frame, with a wicked grin on her face. “And you are holding the left side of your skirt all wrong. Here, like this.” She waltzed in and demonstrated a graceful swoop of fabric. “Unless you are planning to hold onto Alfred’s….other instrument later. Then, by all means, clutch it for dear life.”“SIMONE!” I shrieked, as I felt the heat explode across my cheeks and neck.Bu

ALFRED POVThe fire in the fireplace crackled loudly and casted a warm glow over my study. I was sitting on my desk with the weight of the days to come, settling heavily on our heads. Marcus was lounging on the sofa as if he owned it, while Andre stood like a silent statue in front of the large window and fixed his gaze on the star filled sky.The silence was finally broken by Marcus’s laughter. “So, this is finally it, eh, Alfred? The great lone wolf is ready to hang up his boots? To kiss the wolf fields and all their…fragrant flowers…a permanent goodbye?”I smirked with my eyes still fixed on the supply documents in my hands. “I hung my boots up the moment I found my mate shivering under that fountain. And I do not miss the fields or their flowers one bit.”Marcus chuckled and stretched out his arms behind his head. “I do not blame you. Hanni is a rare bloom. But at least I had my fun! I sampled different varieties, before Simone just….cut my tasting menu short.” He sighed dramatica

ALFRED POV“The final security roster for the northern gate, Alpha,” Sir Briggs stated clearly as he placed the parchment on my desk. “Every guard has been personally vetted. No one with even a distant connection to Jameson is on duty.”I scanned the list, with half of my mind on the words, while the other half was across the castle, with a certain golden haired mate who had been absent for a long time. “Good. Double the patrols along the river boundary. I do not care if it is a squirrel crossing, I want it secured. Dismissed”The moment the door closed behind him, I stood up as Geo prowled around in my mind restlessly. ‘Mate? Where is she?’‘I do not know,’ I replied inwardly as I hurried out of my study. The mind-link with the stone River Pack’s Beta had taken longer than expected in confirming their Alpha’s attendance. All I wanted now was to see Hanni, to feel the calm that just her presence brought me.I had left Marcus, Andre and Simone in the dining hall. But Hanni’s chair was

HANNI POVThe evening air came as a huge relief. After being occupied all morning with Elara with silks all over me, pins poking at my sides, and lessons on how to walk, sit and sip tea like a “proper Luna” —the palace gardens became my hiding spot, my only sanctuary, and I sat there alone, welcoming the cold and appreciating the nature. Then suddenly I heard someone giggle behind me.I turned around nervously and saw her. Mira. Instantly, my body went rigid, as my mind flashed back to the she wolf with the vicious tongue who had so boldly thrown herself at Alfred in the street. I prepared my mind for the confrontation, for the claws and the venom I knew she was harboring in her heart. But the sneer I was waiting for never came. Instead she smiled warmly and said in a small voice. “I hope I am not disturbing your peace, Hanni.”I did not reply, I just watched her with a weary expression on my face.“Why?” I asked bluntly, before I could stop myself.Mira’s smile did not shake. “Becaus

HANNI POVI found Simone in her sun drenched pink coated chambers, directing two maids who were pouring steaming hot water into a large bathtub at the corner of her room. The air smelled strongly of lavender and rose oil.“There you are!” Simone exclaimed brightly and her eyes sparkled with mischief the moment she saw me. “I was about to send a search party, but then I thought, ‘No, do not disturb her. Her Alpha has just returned, and they have….much to discuss.” She winked mischievously as she dragged out the last words. My cheeks became hot instantly. “Simone, stop it,” I laughed and swatted her arm playfully. “You are terrible.”“No. I am just observant,” she replied with a grin on her face. “Now, what brings you to my humble chamber? Should you not be….recovering?”I shook my head in disbelief. “I needed a moment away from all the…intensity. And I had a question.” I lowered my voice slightly, even though the maids had finished and all slipped out. “The traitor…Beta Jameson. Everyo

ALFRED POVMy mind was still filled with the thought of her. I could still practically sniff her scent on me. It was an impossible thought, of course. The huge stone walled chamber, filled with the scent of polished wood, old parchment, and fifty of my most hardened warriors, should have erased any lingering trace of her. Yet, as I stood before the assembled members of the court, I kept remembering the past events.Geo, on his own part, was purring. The beast was sprawled contentedly in my mind, as he growled in satisfaction through our bond. ‘Ours,’ he murmured for the hundredth time. ‘Marked. Safe.’I forced my mind back to the man standing before me. “….and the southern reserves are at ninety percent capacity, Alpha. A good yield, I must say.”I gave a small nod. “Good. Make sure the distribution to the families outside the main gates is a top priority. No one goes hungry in my pack this winter.” My voice was my Alpha voice, firm and authoritative, but it felt like I was wearing an
