Chapter 3 Sign It

Author: Explosive King
I rushed into the ICU, soaked to the bone.

My grandmother, Maureen Kelley, lay motionless on the hospital bed, her lips already turning purple. Jesse sat nearby with his legs crossed, lazily flicking a lighter open and shut.

The live chat went mad again. 'Leave the grandmother out of this, you jerk!'

'He's treating human life like a bargaining chip. He's a scumbag!'

I saw red as I lunged at him. "Jesse, come at me if you want revenge!"

He shoved me away, then strolled over to the ventilator and rested his hand on the power switch. "Sarah, sign the divorce settlement, or I'll unplug it now."

The viewers went berserk. "Jesse deserves hell! Threatening an old woman's life? He's an animal!"

I scrambled back to my feet, wanting to pull his hand away from the switch. However, he kicked me square in the chest.

Pain exploded through my body as I crashed onto the floor, bile rising in my throat.

I struggled to look up. My voice was shaking as I asked, "Jesse, must you do this?"

He sniggered. "You made me do this. If you don't sign the papers, the old hag dies today."

Suddenly, a sweet voice rang at the door.

"Oh, Sarah." Gina walked over and looked down at me with contempt. Then, she slapped me hard across the face. "Didn't you hear what Jesse said?"

Burning pain spread instantly through my cheek, but Gina didn't seem satisfied as she stepped onto my hand. "Sign it, and your grandmother might still live. Otherwise, she dies today!"

Jesse watched coldly from the side, as if this were nothing more than entertainment.

I looked at my grandmother's weak, fading figure on the hospital bed. It felt as if an invisible hand was choking me.

The live chat was furious now. 'Just sign it, Sarah. Save your grandmother first!'

I took in a deep breath, swallowing the metallic taste in my throat and the hatred clawing inside me. "Please. We can talk about the divorce later. Just let the doctor in first."

Gina smiled and put on her innocent act again. "Fine. I'll be generous. I'll let the doctor in if you apologize to Jesse. On your knees, of course."

Jesse leaned against the wall and let out a low chuckle. His voice was filled with cruel amusement as he drawled, "Sarah, I thought nothing could break you. So this is your weak spot."

I watched the numbers on the ventilator drop. My pride and dignity meant nothing anymore.

I dropped to my knees on the cold tiles and begged, "Please. Let the doctor in."

Gina was smug. She grabbed the pot of coffee on the table and poured it over my head.

The hot liquid streamed through my hair and burned my scalp. "Come on. Bark like a dog, and I'll let the doctor in."

Just as I was about to part my lips, Jesse's phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID, and his indifferent expression changed. "Yes, Grandpa. Okay. I understand."

After hanging up, he looked at me darkly. "Grandpa wants you to host the birthday party tomorrow."

Despite the ugly way I had become Jesse's wife, the Fleming family still adored me. Especially his grandfather, Douglas Fleming.

Jesse would never dare disobey him.

He then threw the divorce settlement at me. "Whatever. Sign this after the party tomorrow. If you try anything funny, your grandmother dies tomorrow."

The live chat wailed in frustration.

'Ah! I'm so mad. Is she just going to let him control her like this? Fight back!'

'He's a dying man with HIV. Don't be a coward!'

I looked up at him with a smile. "Sure. I'll be there tomorrow night. I also have a huge surprise for you two."

"Sarah, you vicious woman…" Jesse used the last of his strength to curse me. His voice was low and hoarse. The live chat remained as active as ever, clearly amused by the scene.'Jesse is ruined at this point. What's the point of taking care of him? He has nothing left except a failing body!''You don't understand sunk cost, do you? Since things can't go back, she might as well keep playing the good wife and build herself a perfect reputation."'Come on, girls. Sarah won't get much money even if he dies. The Fleming elders transferred most of their assets long ago.'At that moment, a message in bold font appeared in the chat room.'Friends, I have inside information. There's an offshore trust fund worth thirty billion under Jesse's name. He's the only person who knows the one-time password. Every wrong attempt burns ten percent of the funds.'I paused at the revelation.'Thirty billion, they say?'I looked at the mess on the bed and approached him with a smile."Are you havin

At that critical moment, my phone rang. It was a call from the ICU."Ms. Fulton, Old Mr. Fleming had a heart attack earlier. He didn't make it."The police sealed off the area and arrested Jordan and Gina for causing intentional harm.As Gina was escorted past me, she glared at me with venom in her eyes. "You did this, didn't you? You set us up!"I didn't even bother to look her way. I focused on wiping the blood from Jesse's face; my voice remained as gentle as ever. "I don't understand what you're accusing me of, Gina. But don't worry. I'll hire the best lawyer to make sure you have plenty of time to reflect in prison."Before Jesse slipped into unconsciousness, his lips parted slightly as if he wanted to say something to me.I leaned down close to his face and whispered, "Rest assured, Jesse. Your time isn't up yet. I'll claim you've developed a mental disorder and take the right to dispose of property from you. "Then, you'll spend the rest of your life in the most luxurio

My suggestion stunned them both. The live chat was laughing.'Sarah put two disasters in the same room. One wants a son, and the other wants to climb the social ladder. She turned the hospital room into a battlefield.''Damn, Sarah. That's ruthless. She's making sure they torture each other until they fall apart together.'Jesse stared at me in disbelief. "Don't you mind?"Tears welled in my eyes within a second, impressing even myself. "I can endure everything as long as you get better and your family has a successor."My words moved Jesse. He turned to yell at Gina. "Did you hear Sarah? She's kind enough to tolerate you. Don't you dare to try anything funny, or else I'll strangle you myself."Despite the threat, greed won over Gina's fear. She quickly put on a smile and flattered me. "You're so kind, Sarah. In that case, I'll accept the kind offer."I left the room and closed the door.…What happened in the room over the following days was more entertaining than any soap

After leaving the Fleming residence, I headed to the company.I tossed the termination letter on Jesse's most trusted special assistant's face.Silence enveloped the room. The executives who had once looked down upon me didn't dare to say a word."Sarah, you're only Mr. Fleming's substitute. You have no right to fire us!" His face was flushed with indignation as he protested.I toyed with the fountain pen in my hand. I almost laughed when I remembered that Jesse had given it to me on our wedding anniversary last year."Why not? He has given me the carte blanche and the official seal." I smiled at him.I made a gesture at the door. The new team I had personally promoted walked into the room and replaced the old executives one by one.The live chat was discussing my decision.'Sarah slays again! She eliminates the root cause to avoid trouble.''This is expected from an apex predator. She took advantage of the situation and reaped the benefits.''It's too early to celebrate. Di

In the isolation room of a suburban private hospital, the smell of disinfectant filled the air.Jesse curled up on the bed. His usually immaculate hair was now a mess. In just a short time, he had lost a frightening amount of weight, and even his eyes looked sunken. When he saw me enter the room, he scrambled to his feet and threw himself at the window."Help me, Sarah! The doctors lied to me! They said I only have a few years left to live! But you know so many top doctors. You must have a way to save me, right?"I looked at the pathetic man behind the glass and put on a sorrowful expression.I said nothing. Instead, I raised a trembling hand to the glass, tracing his features from behind the barrier. The live chat disagreed with my behavior.'I can't believe it! He's still playing victim at this point! Run, Sarah! You need to stay away from him!''Come on, Sarah. Don't let him fool you! Don't you remember that he threatened to end your grandmother's life? You should just leave

The report crumpled in Jesse's hand."Are you out of your mind, Sarah?" he accused in a low voice, forcing the threat through gritted teeth. "Did you forge this disgusting report just to spite me? Just to stop me from divorcing you?"Then, he tore the report apart. Shreds of paper scattered across the stage.Gina finally snapped out of her trance. Her face turned pale, but she quickly found security in Jesse's arms."Jesse, it's only because Sarah loves you deeply that she stooped so low and took such an extreme measure. There's no way you can get such a disease! She's trying to embarrass you!"The guests began to exchange whispers among themselves and shot us judgmental looks.I stood on the stage and stared at the devoted lovers. A ghost of a cruel smile curled my lips. "Do you think I forged it?"
