The story starts with Dynan Hemstrong's reviewing territory agreements with the southern pack representative when a commotion started few blocks away.

But the sound of a child's scream had his instincts roaring to life because he's the alpha.

But when Dynan rounded the corner everything seemed to quiet in his ears.

Till he saw three men surrounded a small jewelry shop, their postures aggressive and their intentions clear even from a distance.

One held a baseball bat, another had a crowbar, and the third was kicking over displays like he had all the time in the world.

The shop owner stood in front of her door with blood trickling from her split lip.

She looked like she'd rather die than move an inch, and something about that made Dynan's wolf take notice in a way that had nothing to do with duty.

"Last chance, lady," the man with the crowbar said. "You pay the protection f*e or we burn this place down with everything in it."

"Get out of my shop." Her voice was steady and cold, the kind of tone that suggested she meant every word and had no problem backing it up with action.

Inside the shop, the little girl screamed again and Dynan felt his wolf surge forward without permission, his alpha power flooding the area.

The three men froze instantly, their bodies going stiff as if someone had poured concrete into their veins.

The weight of an alpha's dominance wasn't something you could fight or ignore, especially not when that alpha was as powerful as Dynan.

"Leave now," Dynan said quietly, his voice carrying authority. "Before I decide you've overstayed your welcome."

They didn't need to be told twice as they started scrambling over each other in their desperation to get away from him.

Dynan watched them disappear into the crowd before turning his attention back to the woman, who had started to relax now that the immediate threat was gone.

That was when he perceived her scent and all memory he'd tried to bury and forget came rushing in.

And now his wolf go absolutely wild inside his chest. The little girl ran out of the shop doorway with tears streaming down her face and dark curls bouncing with each step, running straight into the woman's arms like she was the only safe place in the world.

"Mama, I was so scared!" The child buried her face against the woman's stomach, her small hands gripping the fabric of her mother's shirt.

Dynan couldn't breathe, he couldn't do anything except stare at the little girl who had his eyes and his nose and his scent mixed with her mothers.

His wolf was howling inside him, demanding answers and action, but his body felt like it had been turned to stone.

The woman looked up and their eyes. And lo and behold, it was Daggy Johns.

The woman who had disappeared from his life without explanation, leaving him with nothing but questions and a wound that had never quite healed over.

Her face went pale and her eyes went wide with pure terror.

"No," she whispered, the word barely audible. She scooped the little girl up in one smooth motion, holding her tight against her chest.

"Britty, hold on tight to mama."

Then she ran, moving fast through the few marketwomen crowds filled with fear.

Dynan stood frozen in the middle of the shop, watching her disappear while his wolf screamed at him to chase after them and claim back what was clearly his.

But his legs wouldn't cooperate and his mind was too busy trying to process what he'd just happened.

The child had looked back at him over her mother's shoulder, her wide brown eyes confused and frightened.

In that brief moment before they vanished around a corner, Dynan had seen every feature that marked her as his, from the shape of her face to the way her hair curled at her temples.

And without being told he could suspect, that little girl was his daughter.

His phone started buzzing in his pocket but he ignored it, too focused on the empty space where Daggy and Britty had been standing.

"Alpha Hemstrong?" One of his men, a young wolf named Peter, appeared at his elbow looking concerned.

"Is everything alright? We heard there was trouble."

"Find her," Dynan said roughly. "The woman who just ran. I want to know where she's staying, who she's with, and why she's in my territory."

Peter pulled out his phone immediately, already typing. "I'll have information within the hour."

Dynan nodded and started walking, then his phone buzzed again and this time he answered without checking the caller ID. "What?"

"Where are you?" Mary's voice came through sounding irritated. "You were supposed to be home an hour ago and dinner is getting cold."

Mary was his wife, the woman he'd married three years ago because it made sense for the pack and he have to abandon the love he shared with Daggy.

"Something came up with pack business," he said, which wasn't exactly a lie. "I'll be there soon."

Mary sighed on the other end of the line. "Try not to be too late."

He hung up and kept walking, his wolf still restless and furious beneath his skin.

“ Don't worry wolf,” Dynan muttered to his wolf. “ I will find her and I will get my answers, even if I had to turn the entire town upside down to do it.” He continues.

“ I will.”

Foster arrived at the study just past eleven, still dressed in his day clothes though the hour suggested he'd been pulled from something closer to sleep than work, his usual composure slightly frayed at the edges."You said this couldn't wait until morning," Foster said, taking the seat Dynan gestured toward, his eyes already moving toward the folder sitting closed on the desk between them."It couldn't." Dynan slid the report across, watching Foster's expression as he opened it, waiting for the same slow dawning horror that had settled over him hours earlier.Foster read in silence for several long minutes, occasionally flipping back a page to cross-reference something, his jaw tightening incrementally with each new revelation."This is thorough," he finally said, setting the report down and removing his glasses to rub at his eyes. "Where did this come from?""I authorized an internal audit two weeks ago. Quietly." Dynan's voice was flat, controlled in the way that usually meant he w

The setback came without warning, the way these things often did, a nurse's hurried footsteps down the hallway pulling Daggy from a half-sleep she'd fallen into in the small waiting area outside her mother's room."What's happening?" Daggy was on her feet before she'd fully processed the movement, watching two more nurses rush past with equipment she didn't recognize, her heart already hammering with the particular dread that had become familiar over these past weeks."Your mother's oxygen levels dropped suddenly," one of the nurses said, not stopping as she moved toward the room. "Dr. Wells is on his way."Daggy tried to follow but a hand caught her arm gently, one of the guards who'd been assigned to escort her, his grip firm but not unkind. "You need to wait here, ma'am. Let them work.""That's my mother," Daggy said, her voice cracking with a desperation that had become almost constant lately, worn thin from weeks of watching everything she loved hang in uncertain balance."I know

  • Fight like a mother    Chapter 25: What Nina Noticed

Nina had gotten used to Mary's phone ringing during their lunches, a small habit that had never bothered her before because Mary was the alpha's wife and alphas' wives had responsibilities that didn't pause for lunch dates. But lately the calls had changed. Mary used to just glance at the screen and let it go to voicemail with an apologetic smile, promising to call back later. Now she excused herself entirely, walking outside or into the restroom, her voice dropping low the moment she thought she was out of earshot.Nina noticed because Nina had spent years learning to notice things about Mary, the small tells that gave away more than her friend probably realized, and today's lunch was no different."Sorry about that," Mary said, sliding back into her seat with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Palace business. Never ends.""Must be important," Nina said carefully, watching her friend reach for her wine glass with a hand that wasn't quite as steady as usual. "You've been step

Rita didn't sleep that night, lying stiff and awake in her narrow servant's quarters bed, replaying the conversation with Peter over and over until the words had worn grooves into her memory. She kept thinking about his face, the way he hadn't accused her outright but hadn't needed to, the quiet certainty in his eyes that told her he already knew more than he was letting on.By morning she'd made up her mind, or thought she had, dressing carefully and rehearsing what she wanted to say the entire walk down to the administrative wing where Foster kept his office. The door was open when she arrived, Foster hunched over paperwork with his reading glasses perched low on his nose, and Rita stood frozen in the doorway for a long moment before he finally noticed her."Can I help you?" he asked, not unkindly, setting his pen down and giving her his full attention in a way that somehow made this harder rather than easier."I need to talk to you," Rita said, her voice smaller than she wanted it

  • Fight like a mother    Chapter 23: The Groundskeeper's Slip

Curtis Boyle had worked the palace grounds for almost six years, mostly keeping to the hedges and flower beds along the eastern wall, the kind of job that let a man stay invisible if he wanted to, and Curtis had always preferred it that way.Peter found him kneeling in the dirt near the rose garden, gloves caked with soil, a small radio playing static-heavy music beside him that he switched off the moment he noticed someone approaching."Mr. Boyle." Peter kept his tone light, unhurried, the way he'd learned worked best when you didn't want someone bolting before you'd gotten anything useful out of them. "Got a minute?""Depends what for." Curtis didn't look up right away, brushing dirt from a trowel with more attention than the task really required."Just following up on some vehicle registrations. Routine stuff." Peter crouched down near the edge of the flower bed, keeping himself at eye level rather than looming. "You drive a blue sedan, right? Older model."Curtis's hands stilled f

The machines beeped their same steady rhythm they'd kept for days, and Daggy had almost stopped hearing them anymore, the sound fading into background noise the way anything did when you sat with it long enough. She was there on one of her supervised visits, watching her mother's chest rise and fall, when Mitchell's fingers twitched against the blanket, small but unmistakable."Mama?" Daggy sat up straighter, leaning closer, her heart suddenly hammering. "Mom, can you hear me?"Mitchell's eyelids fluttered, slow and heavy, fighting against whatever sedation was still working through her system. It took nearly a full minute before her eyes finally opened, unfocused at first, drifting around the room like she wasn't entirely sure where she was."Daggy?" Her voice was hoarse, barely more than a rasp, but it was her voice, and Daggy nearly sobbed at the sound of it."I'm here, Mama. I'm right here." Daggy took her hand carefully, mindful of the IV taped there. "You're in the hospital. You
