The Shadow of Frankfurt

The grand ballroom of the Grand Kaiser Hotel was an extravagant display of wealth and shadow. Crystal chandeliers cascaded from gold-leaf ceilings, casting fractured light across dark velvet drapes, champagne pyramids, and men in tailored suits whose smiles never reached their eyes.

To the rest of Frankfurt’s elite, it was an annual celebration of high society. To me, it felt like nothing more than a polished, gilded cage.

Herman’s hand rested heavily on the curve of my waist. His touch was firm, possessive, and warm through the thin silk of the emerald dress he had picked out for me. Every time I shifted, the fabric brushed against my bare skin, bringing back unwanted, intoxicating rushes of memory, the heat of the bath, the steam rising around us, and the shameless way I had let a stranger unravel me in his arms.

"You are tense, *Mein Engel*," Herman murmured, leaning down so his lips brushed the shell of my ear. His deep voice sent a shiver straight down my spine.

"I don't belong here," I whispered, keeping my eyes fixed on the marble floor. "Everyone is looking at us."

"Let them look," Herman replied with a low, quiet chuckle. His thumb traced small, deliberate circles against my hip, grounding me. "They aren't looking at us. They are looking at *you*. And the wolves in this room know better than to reach for what belongs to me."

"Are they worse than you?" I looked up, catching the icy, piercing blue of his gaze.

A slow, dangerous smirk pulled at the corner of his lips. "Never."

Before I could process the sharp edge in his tone, a smooth, familiar voice broke through the hum of classical music and clinking glass.

"Herman Liechenberg. I didn't think you'd have the audacity to show your face in public while the shipping inquiry is still open."

My breath caught in my throat. My entire body locked up, and for a terrifying second, my heart stopped beating entirely.

I turned slowly. Standing only a few feet away was the man whose name had been my secret sanctuary for years. The boy I had written dozens of hidden, desperate letters to under the cover of night. The boy whose memory I had held onto while enduring my father’s strict rules and my mother’s cold scoldings.

Noah Thorne.

He looked entirely different from the quiet, ambitious boy who had left our small town years ago, dressed in a sharply tailored navy tuxedo, with his dark hair styled effortlessly and a legal crest pinned to his lapel, he looked like he belonged to this world of wealth and power.

"Noah..." The name escaped my lips in a faint, trembling breath.

Noah’s eyes swept over me, freezing the instant they met mine, genuine shock followed quickly by absolute disbelief registered on his face, his gaze dropped down to Herman’s hand resting heavily on my waist.

"Lanarai?" Noah took a step forward, his voice tight. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get to Frankfurt? And why are you with *him*?"

My throat felt raw, coated in sudden panic. "Noah, I…I came looking…"

"Miss Kensly is here as my guest, Barrister Thorne," Herman interrupted smoothly, his tone instantly shifting from smooth indulgence to pure arctic ice. His grip on my waist tightened, pulling me back against his side with unyielding strength. "Though I am surprised to see you wandering around a gala floor, don't you have flimsy affidavits to draft for your failed court cases?"

"Herman, darling, don't be rude," a smooth, cultured female voice chimed in.

A striking blonde in a clinging red silk dress stepped up beside Noah, sliding her arm through his with practiced ease. She carried herself with the arrogant grace of old money. Her sharp, dark eyes swept over Herman with an intense, lingering heat that made my skin prickle, completely ignoring my presence.

"It's been months," she murmured, leaning slightly toward Herman. "You haven't returned a single one of my private calls."

"Because I have no use for you, Katherine," Herman said coldly, without so much as glancing at her. His gaze remained locked on Noah.

Noah’s face flushed with anger, ge stepped past the woman, stepping directly into Herman's path to look at me. "Lana, look at me. Did he bring you here against your will? Is he holding something over you? Tell me right now. I'm a lawyer…I can get you out of his hands tonight."

The desperation in his eyes felt real, for a fraction of a second, the old Noah shone through…the boy who promised he would come back to save me. I took a small breath, opening my mouth to tell him everything, about the discovered letters, the forced marriage to Pastor Michael, the blood on the church floor, and how I had waited for him until the very end.

"Noah, darling, please don't cause a scene here," Katherine said, her voice laced with light amusement as she pulled gently on his arm. "The Mayor and the Chief of Police are standing right by the bar. Besides, we shouldn't ruin our own celebration."

She looked at me then, offering a condescending smile that didn't reach her eyes. "We're announcing our engagement in less than an hour."

The floor beneath my feet felt like it gave way completely.

*Engagement.*

The word echoed loudly in my head, drowning out the string quartet, the chatter, and the heavy pounding of my own pulse. I stared at Noah, my breath catching painfully in my chest.

"Engagement?" My voice was barely an audible whisper.

Noah’s composure cracked for a brief moment. He looked away, avoiding my eyes as a flicker of guilt crossed his features. But just as quickly, he straightened his stance and hardened his expression.

"Lana, it's... it's complicated," Noah said, his tone turning distant, professional, and practical. "I'm a senior partner at the firm now. Katherine's father, Judge Paul, has been instrumental in securing my career here in Frankfurt. I had to make decisions for my future."

Every letter I had written in the dark... every tear I had cried while hiding beneath floorboards... every lie I told my parents to protect his name…it all collapsed into dust right before my eyes. While I was being dragged to an altar back in Westphalia to be forced onto a cruel older man, Noah was building a life of prestige on the arm of a judge's daughter in Frankfurt.

He hadn't been blocked from coming for me. He had simply moved on.

A tremor passed through my legs, and my knees threatened to buckle. But before I could fall, Herman shifted behind me. His broad chest pressed against my back, providing a solid wall of support. His hand slid up to wrap firmly around my ribcage, holding me upright and flush against him.

"She isn't in trouble, Thorne," Herman said, his voice dropping into a dark, lethal register that caused even Katherine to go quiet. "And she certainly doesn't need saving from a boy who trades his promises for a seat at the Judge's table."

"Herman…" Noah began, stepping forward with his fist clenched at his side.

"She is right where she belongs," Herman cut him off, stepping back and turning me away from them effortlessly. "With a man who actually reads her letters and keeps every single promise."

Herman guided me toward the high glass doors leading to the private terrace, ignoring Noah's calls behind us. The cool night air hit my face, chilling the hot tears that spilled over my cheeks.

Herman brought us to a stop against the stone balustrade, overlooking the sprawling skyline of Frankfurt below. Without a word, he pulled me flush into his chest, wrapping his heavy arms around me until there was no space left between us.

"Look at me, *Mein Engel*," he commanded softly, his hand rising to gently cup my trembling jaw.

I looked up, my vision blurred by unshed tears.

"His promises were hollow, but mine are written in blood," Herman whispered, his dark eyes locking onto mine with hypnotic intensity. "He gave you up for power. I burned down a whole church just to hold you tonight. Remember who really came for you."

I let out a shaky breath, pressing my forehead against his neck. I didn't pull away. I let the darkness of his world wrap around me, realizing that my innocent past was officially dead and the monster holding me was the only anchor I had left.

I woke up to sunlight streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows and the scent of Herman's cologne lingering on the pillow beside me.For a moment, I didn't move, lying there with my eyes closed; I breathed him in. The silk sheets were soft against my bare skin, and my body ached in places I didn't know could ache. The soreness between my thighs that ached with every little movement I made was a constant reminder of what had happened the night before.I stretched my hand across the sheets, reaching for him, my eyes still closed, searching for the warmth of his body.Last night he'd held me so tightly I could barely breathe, his arm draped over my waist, his breath warm against the back of my neck. He'd whispered things in the dark, things that made my heart race and my cheeks burn. But instead of his warm body, my hand held nothing but cold fabric. My eyes flew open. The space beside me was empty. The sheets were smooth and untouched, as if no one had ever been there at all.I sat up

Tying the silk scarf behind my head, Herman pushes me down into the bed. For some reason the smell of his cologne smelled stronger, and I could hear the sound of his breathing above me.“Herman…” My voice came out thin.“I’m here," he says in a hoarse voice as he traces the edge of the scarf from my temple down to my cheek. “If it gets too much, she can say stop, do you understand? Anytime.”I nodded.“Use your words, please, Engel," he whispers in my ear, making my body tingle."Yes… I understand.”His mouth brushed the corner of mine, and then he pulled away. I heard the rustling of clothes before he came up against me.He lifted my foot, kissing them slowly. "Herman…" I breathe. "What…what are you doing?"He doesn't stop. "Just trust me, okay?”So I swallowed my words and let him continue, his lips close around my big toe as he sucked in it hard."Herman…" I whispered his name as a tingling sensation travelled down my core. I immediately tried to pull my foot back, but he held firm

Noah's POV"Ahhhh!" I screamed, shoving everything off the table in my study.Papers flew everywhere; the crystal decanter filled with 1990 Château Pétrus shattered against the wall with a loud crash, but I didn't care.My laptop crashed to the floor, the screen cracking, but none of it mattered. Nothing could erase the image of Lanarai in the arms of Herman Liechenberg as he carried her out like he owned her."How dare he?" I paced the room, my hands shaking with rage. "He thinks he can just come and take her? She wouldn't be with him willingly. She couldn't be. He must have forced her. He must have…. "I grabbed my phone, fingers trembling as I dialed the only person I could talk to about this."Marcus." I almost yelled as soon as he picked up. "Marcus, you won't believe what happened.""Slow down, Noah." Marcus's voice came through the speaker, calm and measured as always. Marcus Chen and I go way back to my law school days. We've been thieves, and he was the only person who knew m

Herman's POV"Mhmmmm." She kept tapping my chest to make me stop, but instead I pulled her tighter against me, kissing her deeper.I couldn't get enough of her. The taste of her lips, the soft little sounds she made that went straight to my cock. The way her fingers tangled in my hair, pulling me closer.Every letter I'd read, every fantasy I'd imagined under the cover of darkness, every night I'd stroked myself to the thought of her—none of it compared to having her here in my arms."We are here, sir," the driver said, his voice cutting through the haze.Only then did I break the kiss.Looking down at her in the dim light, I'd never seen anyone so beautiful. Her lips were swollen, kiss-bruised, and glistening. Her breaths came in uneven little gasps."You're so fucking beautiful, Engel," I mumbled, straightening her dress even though all I wanted to do was tear it off her right there in the backseat, driver be damned.Without another word, I stepped out of the car, walking around to

Noah's words replayed on a vicious loop inside my head."I had to make decisions for my future."I couldn't breathe. The cold night air hit my face but did nothing to cool the fire burning in my chest.I was a decision. An option. Something to be weighed and measured, then discarded when something better came along.I didn't realize I was crying until Herman wiped the tears off my face with the back of his hand. His touch was surprisingly gentle, almost reverent, a stark contrast to the violence I'd witnessed from him hours before."Don't," he said in a low voice. "Don't you dare cry for another man in front of me. I'm the only one allowed to make you cry."I chuckled despite myself, a broken, hollow sound that escaped before I could stop it.I looked up at him, this stranger who had burned down the world just to keep me safe.A small smile tugging at my lips."Take me home, please."Herman's eyes searched mine, dark and unreadable.
