Chapter 2

last update 公開日: 2026-08-10 18:14:24

The nursery door hangs open, and I already know.

I cross the room in three strides and rip back the blanket, empty, cold, the sheet barely dented where she should be curled up small. I drop to the floor and check under the bed. Nothing. I wrench open the wardrobe, throw aside her coats, her boots, her boots are gone too.

I'm pounding on the nursery maid's door before I decide to. She stumbles out half-asleep, stammering that she checked an hour ago, Wren was fine, Wren was—

I don't wait for the end of that sentence. I'm already moving, throwing open doors down the east corridor, checking behind curtains, under tables, my own voice tearing out of me raw and useless, calling her name into empty room after empty room. I hit the guards at the perimeter and grab the nearest one by his collar.

"Did she pass you? Wren—did anyone see her?"

He shakes his head, eyes wide, and I shove past him before he finishes stammering an apology. I drop to a crouch at the tree line, nose to the dirt, and there, her scent, thin and sharp with fear, dragging straight toward the black wall of trees every pup in this pack learns to fear before they learn to walk.

I shift running.

Bones crack and rearrange mid-stride, clothes shredding away, and I hit the forest floor on four paws with my claws already tearing dirt. Branches whip my face. I don't slow down. Her scent thickens with every stride, and under it, rising fast, the musk of rogues.

I break through the brush and there she is, pressed flat against a blackened oak, three wolves fanned out in a crouch, one already gathering itself to spring.

I hit him before his paws leave the ground.

My jaws close around his throat mid-air and we crash into the dirt together, his blood hot and immediate against my tongue, his scream cut short. A second wolf slams into my flank and teeth tear down my shoulder, white heat, then nothing, adrenaline swallowing the pain whole. I twist, snap, catch his ear between my teeth and wrench until he yelps and scrambles back. The third circles wide, snarling, testing the distance between us.

I plant myself between him and Wren and I don't move.

He runs. The other two follow, bleeding, yelping into the dark, and the forest goes quiet except for my own ragged breathing and the frantic thud of my heart against my ribs.

I shift back on my knees in front of her.

"Are you hurt? Look at me—did they touch you?"

She shakes her head, too shaken to speak, and I run my hands down her arms, her legs, checking for teeth marks, for blood that isn't mine. Nothing. I pull her against my chest and she finally breaks, sobbing into my collarbone while I rock her, one hand cradling the back of her head.

"I've got you," I say against her hair. "I've got you."

She cries until she's empty. I carry her out of the trees, back across the training grounds, past a pack house blazing gold and loud with celebration, and I don't stop walking until I've laid her in her own bed and pulled the blanket to her chin. I sit on the edge of the mattress and watch her breathing slow, watch her eyes finally close.

I go looking for Damon, wondering how he was able to sleep at night when his child was in danger. I almost lost Wren today because of him.

His scent hits me on the east staircase, thick and unmistakable, and laid over it, a second scent that stops me cold on the top step.

Jasmine and smoke.

I push the door open.

My father hands me the ledgers for the family's northern trade division on my second week back, and I spend three days buried in numbers before I understand why he's really giving them to me."This isn't training," I tell him, closing the last folder. "This is a test.""Everything is a test." He doesn't look up from his own paperwork. "You'll take over first class operations by the end of the month. Show me you can hold it."I hold it. I clear a backlog that's been sitting untouched for two years, renegotiate three shipping contracts that were bleeding the pack dry, and by the second week I'm running board meetings in a voice that doesn't shake once. The message arrives on a Tuesday night, buried in an anonymous account with no name attached, just a single line. You should see what he's been saying about you.Attached beneath it, a full thread of messages between Damon and Seraphine, months old, timestamps stretching back well before the divorce, well before the awakening ceremony tha

My father summons me to the training grounds before I've even finished my morning tea, and I find a man already waiting there when I arrive, arms crossed, watching me cross the courtyard like he's already decided I'm wasting his time."This is Lucien," my father says. "Commander of my personal guard. He'll be training you.""Training me for what?""For whoever you're about to become." My father claps a hand on Lucien's shoulder and walks away before I can argue, leaving me alone with a man built like a wall and twice as unreadable.Lucien circles me once, slow, assessing, the way I've seen wolves size up prey before they decide whether it's worth the chase."You've gone soft," he says."Excuse me?""Five years chained to another pack's rhythm, and you let your wolf go quiet. I can smell it on you. Weak. Buried." He stops in front of me, close enough that I have to tip my chin up to hold his stare. "You want to reclaim a bloodline, you'll need more than a crest and a last name.""I did

Damon’s povThe investigator's report sits open on my desk when the second piece of news breaks, an announcement running across every pack channel by midmorning: the Wolf King will host a banquet at the northern palace within the month, and rumor already has it he's naming his successor.I'm reaching for my phone before I finish reading the headline."Charter the jet," I tell my assistant. "We are going to the northern palace by the week of the banquet. I don't care what it costs.""Should I list a reason for the trip?" she asks, already typing."Family reconciliation." The lie comes easy, practiced. "Put that down."My mother finds me in the hallway an hour later, watching the packing crew load cases into the car, and she stops me with a hand on my arm before I can brush past her."Have you heard from Elara?" Her voice carries something careful, something almost hopeful, and I remember too late that she liked her, actually liked her, back when Elara used to sit with her over tea and

Damon’s povFive years I had her under my roof. Five years I let her handle the pack's accounts, sign for shipments, manage half my father's business without once asking why she was so good at it.How could she possibly be the Alpha’s daughter? It must just be a ploy to lure me back into reconciliation.I never asked because I never needed to.I need to now. "She's not throwing a tantrum," I say, mostly to myself, watching the broadcast loop back to her face. "She's not gone."My father's still watching me, careful, the way he's watched me since I tore that cloak off her shoulders in front of the whole pack. "Damon—""She just needs reminding of where she belongs." I set the glass down and reach for my phone, already dialing the family lawyer instead of her. "And I need to remind her before somebody else gets there first."The council member stands in the doorway of my father's study, a scroll bearing the Moon Goddess's seal held out like it might burn him."The bond dissolution has

My phone rings on the third night in Wolf King City, Damon's name lighting up the screen from somewhere back in Obsidian territory, and I let it ring twice before I answer."You have some nerve," he says, no greeting, straight into it. "Do you know what people are saying about you? Running off to Daddy the second things get hard, dragging our daughter into your little tantrum.""I didn't run anywhere." I keep my voice level, watching Wren asleep on the couch across the room, her breathing even for the first time in days. "You tore the cloak off my shoulders in front of the whole pack, Damon. I walked out the door you opened.""You're being dramatic." I can hear him pacing, the creak of floorboards under his boots. "Come home. We'll talk this through like adults. Wren needs her father.""Wren needed her father five years ago, at her own awakening ceremony. You were too busy handing her sacred stone to Callan to notice she was standing in that circle alone.""Don't twist this into somet

The gates of Wolf King City don't creak open like the ones I left behind. They part in silence, ancient stone grinding on some mechanism older than my father's father, and beyond them the city spreads out gold and glittering under a sky I haven't stood beneath in five years.Wren's hand tightens in mine."Mom." Her voice comes small, uncertain, eyes wide on the towers rising ahead of us. "Is this really where you grew up?""It is."Two figures break from the crowd gathered at the gate before I finish the sentence, and I know them the second they move, the same stride, the same restless energy I remember from childhood, older now, broader, but unmistakably mine."Elara." Thorne reaches me first, pulling me into his chest hard enough to lift me off my feet, and I feel five years crack open all at once against his shoulder. "You're finally home."Griffin's right behind him, ruffling Wren's hair before he even looks at me properly. "And who's this? Don't tell me our niece finally decided
