Chapter 2

Author: Severed Thoughts
When Trey came out of the room, the rain hadn't stopped.

I had been sitting on the couch in the main hall.

When Trey saw me, he immediately let go of Serana's hand. "Are you here to see me?"

I nodded and made up an excuse. "The rain's too heavy. I was just passing by to take shelter."

My gaze shifted to the wolves behind him, including Beta Jenson Fletcher and Serana. Their expressions were impassive. None of them explained why Serana was there, nor did they show any hint of guilt.

They all knew that when it came to Trey, I would eventually give in.

Trey naturally took my hand and rubbed it between his palms to warm me up from the chill of the rainy night.

"You said you liked that limited edition green crystal bracelet from the neutral zone, right? I made a trip there and forgot to tell you in advance."

"Where's the bracelet?" I asked directly.

His gaze drifted instinctively to Serana. "It had to be custom-made. I altered the design myself, so... you'll probably have to wait until after the ceremony to get it."

I forced a smile but didn't say anything.

As we were waiting for the car, Serana suddenly gasped. Her bracelet had gotten caught on some nearby decoration.

She yanked it hard, and the bracelet snapped. The green crystals scattered across the marble floor.

It was the exact design I liked.

Serana scrambled to pick up the pieces, but a sharp shard cut her finger.

As blood began to trickle out, Trey immediately let go of my hand and rushed over.

"Why are you so careless?"

He quickly pulled out the handkerchief from his pocket and gently wrapped it around her bleeding finger.

That handkerchief had been a gift from me on his coming-of-age day. Trey had never used it, but now it was stained with Serana's blood.

When he noticed that I was watching him, his face flashed with a moment of guilt.

"Leah, I'll take Serana to the healing center to get this bandaged up. I'll be back to pick you up soon."

Before I could respond, he had already carried Serana into the SUV.

Seeing that, Jenson spoke up awkwardly. "Serana helped Alpha Trey before. Don't take it the wrong way, Leah. Should we take you home?"

I shook my head, telling them to go ahead. I just wanted to see if Trey would really come back.

The sky grew darker, and the rain came down harder.

He never showed up, not even when the pack sent people to press me to return.

Once again, he'd broken his promise.

The next morning, Trey rushed into my place. When he saw me sitting at the breakfast table, he breathed a sigh of relief.

"Sorry, Leah. The car had a flat tire shortly after we left, so I couldn't come back to pick you up."

I didn't hear a word of his explanation.

My gaze was fixed on the faint reddish mark on his neck—an unmistakable sign of a she-wolf's claws.

As if determined to tear away the last of the pretense, I reached out to touch that red mark.

But Trey suddenly stepped back and instinctively tugged his collar up higher.

"I got scratched by a branch on the way back," he said calmly, then pressed his lips tight.

I lowered my gaze and dug my nails deep into my palms, using the sharp sting to push back the burning in my eyes.

When Trey lied, the corners of his mouth would tighten ever so slightly. It was a habit he hadn't even realized he had.

He was lying to me.

"Is it serious? Want me to dress it for you?" I asked.

"No need!"

His reaction was so explosive that he practically jumped. He quickly changed the subject. "By the way, didn't you say the veil for the ceremony is missing a main diamond? Let's go to the auction center now and pick one out."

After saying that, Trey walked briskly to the car, turning his back to me as he waited.

I let out a bitter laugh, and tears finally slipped down my cheek.

When I changed clothes and stepped outside, his neck was now fully covered.

The car had barely come to a halt in front of the neutral zone auction center when the sound of a heated argument drifted out from within.

I looked up toward the VIP room on the second floor. Through the glass, I saw Serana's figure.

As I looked at Trey, I felt nothing but absurdity. "But the wolves of the Gram pack never got a chance to regret."With those words, I lifted Dad's bone whistle and slammed it heavily into the snow at his feet."From today on, you're no longer worthy to even speak my name. You'll live with these wounds and watch the Sawyer pack fall apart. Winterbrook is gone, your reputation is gone, and even the Alpha position you cherish so much will never be yours again."I lifted my front paw and stomped down hard on his spine, pressing him deeper into the snow.At that moment, a flood of images passed through my mind— the fire that consumed the Gram pack that night, Dad's dying roar, the 15 years I spent living like an outsider in the Sawyer pack, the shattered green crystal, and Trey's repeated lies that made me sick. Then, I bit through his throat.Trey's agonizing howl rang out in the snowy night but quickly faded into weakness.I didn't sever his throat completely.I wanted him alive,

I nodded and stepped into the snow outside the neutral zone. The cold wind rushed into my collar, like that night 15 years ago when the Gram pack fell.Trey stood not far away with his back straight, but there was no longer the towering arrogance that once radiated from him.I thought of Mom's trembling hands when she shoved me into the basement, of Dad's back standing in the doorway, and of the trust and love I had handed over to my enemies over the years. An apology couldn't erase that.Moonlight poured over the snow, like a layer of cold salt.He looked at me, his eyes clouded with exhaustion, shame, and a flash of belated pain."Leah." His voice was carried by the wind. "Must it come to this?"I didn't answer. What answered him was the soft snap of my bones as I stretched. The next second, I shifted into my wolf form in the snow.A collective gasp echoed from the sidelines.Even I froze for a moment. It had been years since I had shifted into my wolf form so smoothly.

The air in the stone house felt frozen, thick with tension.I bent down and picked up the letter. The paper was rough, its edges frayed, but the words on it were sharp. Each stroke of the pen felt like a blade thrusting into my chest.Trey finally snapped out of his daze and stepped forward urgently. "Leah, I only found out about this later!"His voice was hoarse. "My dad did those things! It wasn't me!""But you knew, and you still didn't tell me," I replied softly as I looked at him. "Trey, your greatest sin isn't what your father did. It's the fact that you knew I considered you my only family, and you still lied to me."I raised my head. My voice was soft but resolute as I said, "Go to the neutral zone and notify the Elders' Council."The room fell completely silent.Trey seemed to be struck dumb. He lunged at me. "Leah, you can't do this! If you bring the Elders' Council in, the Sawyer pack will be finished!"Danny moved swiftly, kicking him back against the wall."Finish

The next morning, Evan delivered his findings. It was a charred topographical map."It was found inside the stone house," he said quietly. "This is the guard map of the Gram pack."As I stared at the burned map, an unsettling feeling grew in my chest. At that exact moment, Trey appeared again. As he stepped into the front hall, the dark circles under his eyes were impossible to miss. It looked as though he hadn't slept a wink all night. The moment he saw the mark on my neck, his Adam's apple bobbed visibly."Leah, I need to speak with you alone.""That's not necessary," I replied without moving from my seat. "You can say it here."He seemed to be suppressing something as he pulled out an auction receipt and placed it on the table. "I wanted to buy the green diamond for you."I glanced at it briefly, and a sudden sense of irony washed over me. "So?""Leah, I know you're angry with me," he rasped. "But you should know that I never actually intended to let you go. I just—""You

As I followed Danny out the door, Trey was already surrounded by the Gronya pack's guards. It was clear that Danny wasn't happy about the interruption to his peaceful night. The anger in his eyes was barely contained. "Who gave you the nerve to invade my territory?"Trey's eyes were bloodshot as he fixed his gaze on the mark on my neck that was still faintly red. "Give Leah back to me."Before he could say another word, Danny stepped forward and grabbed him by the throat."You're the one who sent her to me last night. Now you come to take her back? Do you even deserve her?"Trey's face was turning blue, but he still looked at me. "Leah, come back with me. I can explain.""Explain what?" I walked down the steps, my voice icy. "Explain why you used my dad's bone whistle to force me to kneel? Or explain why you marked another she-wolf during my bonding ceremony?"Trey's lips moved, like he wanted to say something. But I didn't give him the chance."Haven't you told enough lies ye

  • Finally Done With the Lies   Chapter 4

As I left the auction center, a beautiful green diamond was just starting to be auctioned off.But I didn't care anymore. After all, my bonding ceremony had already been unilaterally canceled by Trey.Whether the veil had the main diamond or not didn't matter anymore. However, just as I left the auction center, Trey stopped me.He grabbed my wrist with such force that it felt like he was going to crush my bones. "Serana's hurt. You need to apologize to her."I jerked my arm free and met his cold gaze before speaking each word slowly. "I told you, I didn't push her. Why should I apologize?""I only believe what I see with my own eyes." Trey's voice was low and dark. "Leah, don't push me."With that, he pulled a grayish bone whistle from his chest. It was Dad's keepsake. After the Gram pack was destroyed, this bone whistle had been the last thing he left me.My heart sank. "You're going to use it to threaten me?""It's not a threat."Trey stared at me, his voice cold and har
