Chapter 4

Author: Severed Thoughts
As I left the auction center, a beautiful green diamond was just starting to be auctioned off.

But I didn't care anymore.

After all, my bonding ceremony had already been unilaterally canceled by Trey.

Whether the veil had the main diamond or not didn't matter anymore.

However, just as I left the auction center, Trey stopped me.

He grabbed my wrist with such force that it felt like he was going to crush my bones. "Serana's hurt. You need to apologize to her."

I jerked my arm free and met his cold gaze before speaking each word slowly. "I told you, I didn't push her. Why should I apologize?"

"I only believe what I see with my own eyes." Trey's voice was low and dark. "Leah, don't push me."

With that, he pulled a grayish bone whistle from his chest.

It was Dad's keepsake.

After the Gram pack was destroyed, this bone whistle had been the last thing he left me.

My heart sank. "You're going to use it to threaten me?"

"It's not a threat."

Trey stared at me, his voice cold and hard. "If you apologize to her, I'll give it back to you."

I stared at him, then suddenly laughed until tears welled up in my eyes.

I turned my face away, forcing the tears back. "Fine. I'll apologize, and you'll return it to me immediately after."

Trey was silent for a moment, then finally nodded.

Serana had been placed in the most expensive healing center in the neutral zone.

When she saw me, she immediately shrank into her blankets, looking like she had suffered the greatest injustice.

"I'm sorry," I said flatly, then extended my hand to Trey, signaling him to return the bone whistle.

But instead of handing it over, Trey pulled Serana closer and said coldly, "This isn't an apology. Get down on your knees."

My throat tightened, and a pain shot through my chest.

Trey's eyes locked onto me as he coldly added, "Lower your head and press your forehead to her feet."

For a moment, I thought I had heard him wrong.

Looking at him, I suddenly realized that all the reliance I had built over the years was nothing but a joke.

But seeing the bone whistle in his hand, I slowly bent my knee and kneeled on the cold stone floor.

Serana moved her foot back slightly as if to avoid me, but she deliberately slowed down her movements.

I lowered my eyes, and under their gaze, I bent forward, pressing my forehead against her bare foot. "Are you happy now?"

Finally, Trey tossed the bone whistle back into my arms.

I gripped it tightly, got up, and walked away without looking back, even as he called my name.

The next two days, Trey and I didn't meet again, until the day of the bonding ceremony.

The Sawyer pack had many old customs.

Once the mate got into the car, the bonding convoy was supposed to circle the pack's borders to let the Moon Goddess witness the union.

When Trey sent me off to the car, he whispered, "No matter what happens on the way, don't panic. Wait for me to pick you up."

I didn't respond, not even sparing him a glance.

As expected, the convoy first drove along the Sawyer pack's borders. When we reached the mouth of the canyon, the car suddenly stopped.

About ten minutes later, the convoy started again, but the direction had changed.

Instead of heading to the Sawyer pack's center, the car was now heading toward the Gronya pack.

When the door was pulled open, I immediately saw Danny standing in the night.

He was clad in a long black trench coat, his silver-white hair ruffled by the night wind. His eyes were cold and distant, like a winter blizzard in the North.

As the Alpha of the Gronya Pack, he was terrifyingly powerful.

Seeing me, he smirked. "Welcome."

I pushed down the turmoil of emotions rising in my chest and asked in a low voice, "You're not surprised to see me?"

Danny looked at me, as though he had already seen through my disguise, and chuckled softly. "You didn't look surprised either."

When he took my hand, I felt his burning palm.

"Do you want to go back? Back to Trey?" he asked.

Without hesitation, I shook my head. "No."

"Then you'll stay with me from now on."

When Danny lowered his head and kissed me, the first thing I smelled wasn't alcohol or blood. It was the cool yet intense scent of cedarwood. The scent hit me like fire in the snow, burning deep into my heart and making my legs go weak.

It wasn't until that moment that I understood that this was the scent of a fated mate—something I had never smelled on Trey.

That night, Danny carried me back to the room.

In the frantic gasps, the scent of cedar wrapped around me, like a mark placed by the Moon Goddess herself.

Trapped in his arms, I was forced to endure his presence again and again. I found myself realizing with growing clarity that this wolf in front of me was the one I was truly meant to be close to.

But just as I closed my eyes, the urgent sound of an alarm blared.

And then, Trey's furious shout followed. "What do you mean she's already been marked? That's absolute bullshit!"

As I looked at Trey, I felt nothing but absurdity. "But the wolves of the Gram pack never got a chance to regret."With those words, I lifted Dad's bone whistle and slammed it heavily into the snow at his feet."From today on, you're no longer worthy to even speak my name. You'll live with these wounds and watch the Sawyer pack fall apart. Winterbrook is gone, your reputation is gone, and even the Alpha position you cherish so much will never be yours again."I lifted my front paw and stomped down hard on his spine, pressing him deeper into the snow.At that moment, a flood of images passed through my mind— the fire that consumed the Gram pack that night, Dad's dying roar, the 15 years I spent living like an outsider in the Sawyer pack, the shattered green crystal, and Trey's repeated lies that made me sick. Then, I bit through his throat.Trey's agonizing howl rang out in the snowy night but quickly faded into weakness.I didn't sever his throat completely.I wanted him alive,

I nodded and stepped into the snow outside the neutral zone. The cold wind rushed into my collar, like that night 15 years ago when the Gram pack fell.Trey stood not far away with his back straight, but there was no longer the towering arrogance that once radiated from him.I thought of Mom's trembling hands when she shoved me into the basement, of Dad's back standing in the doorway, and of the trust and love I had handed over to my enemies over the years. An apology couldn't erase that.Moonlight poured over the snow, like a layer of cold salt.He looked at me, his eyes clouded with exhaustion, shame, and a flash of belated pain."Leah." His voice was carried by the wind. "Must it come to this?"I didn't answer. What answered him was the soft snap of my bones as I stretched. The next second, I shifted into my wolf form in the snow.A collective gasp echoed from the sidelines.Even I froze for a moment. It had been years since I had shifted into my wolf form so smoothly.

The air in the stone house felt frozen, thick with tension.I bent down and picked up the letter. The paper was rough, its edges frayed, but the words on it were sharp. Each stroke of the pen felt like a blade thrusting into my chest.Trey finally snapped out of his daze and stepped forward urgently. "Leah, I only found out about this later!"His voice was hoarse. "My dad did those things! It wasn't me!""But you knew, and you still didn't tell me," I replied softly as I looked at him. "Trey, your greatest sin isn't what your father did. It's the fact that you knew I considered you my only family, and you still lied to me."I raised my head. My voice was soft but resolute as I said, "Go to the neutral zone and notify the Elders' Council."The room fell completely silent.Trey seemed to be struck dumb. He lunged at me. "Leah, you can't do this! If you bring the Elders' Council in, the Sawyer pack will be finished!"Danny moved swiftly, kicking him back against the wall."Finish

The next morning, Evan delivered his findings. It was a charred topographical map."It was found inside the stone house," he said quietly. "This is the guard map of the Gram pack."As I stared at the burned map, an unsettling feeling grew in my chest. At that exact moment, Trey appeared again. As he stepped into the front hall, the dark circles under his eyes were impossible to miss. It looked as though he hadn't slept a wink all night. The moment he saw the mark on my neck, his Adam's apple bobbed visibly."Leah, I need to speak with you alone.""That's not necessary," I replied without moving from my seat. "You can say it here."He seemed to be suppressing something as he pulled out an auction receipt and placed it on the table. "I wanted to buy the green diamond for you."I glanced at it briefly, and a sudden sense of irony washed over me. "So?""Leah, I know you're angry with me," he rasped. "But you should know that I never actually intended to let you go. I just—""You

As I followed Danny out the door, Trey was already surrounded by the Gronya pack's guards. It was clear that Danny wasn't happy about the interruption to his peaceful night. The anger in his eyes was barely contained. "Who gave you the nerve to invade my territory?"Trey's eyes were bloodshot as he fixed his gaze on the mark on my neck that was still faintly red. "Give Leah back to me."Before he could say another word, Danny stepped forward and grabbed him by the throat."You're the one who sent her to me last night. Now you come to take her back? Do you even deserve her?"Trey's face was turning blue, but he still looked at me. "Leah, come back with me. I can explain.""Explain what?" I walked down the steps, my voice icy. "Explain why you used my dad's bone whistle to force me to kneel? Or explain why you marked another she-wolf during my bonding ceremony?"Trey's lips moved, like he wanted to say something. But I didn't give him the chance."Haven't you told enough lies ye
