"Hey lady, this shirt still looks pretty new. You sure you don't want it?"

The garbage collector held up the collar. Tucked right by the cuff was a tiny, crooked sun that Daisy had stitched.

"I'm sure."

"What about these slippers? They've only been worn a few times, right?"

"Crush them all."

He reached down again and pulled out a blue toothbrush with a little sticker that read "Daddy".

"Your kid put this on here? Sure you don't want to keep it?"

"I said crush it."

The trash truck's compactor slowly closed. The little stitched sun was the first to get soaked in filthy wastewater, before sinking into the sludge right alongside the toothbrush.

The man glanced at me, but didn't ask any more questions.

When I got back upstairs, the front door lock was jiggling.

"Debra, this spare key actually works! She didn't even change the locks," Ava Graham, Theo's cousin, said as she pushed the door open, holding two fancy specialty hampers.

My mother-in-law, Debra Miller, followed right behind her. The moment her eyes landed on me, her face darkened.

"You were home this whole time? Why didn't you open the door?"

"Didn't hear it."

"Where's Daisy?"

My fingers froze on my suitcase zipper.

This was the very first time since last night that any of the Grahams had asked about Daisy.

"She's—"

"Well, tell her not to touch these two boxes. They're high-end gourmet health supplements meant to nourish Sophia's body. They cost over eight thousand a box. If she breaks them, you can't afford to pay it back." Debra set the boxes on the table, cutting me off before I could finish.

Ava pinched her nose. "Why does this apartment still smell so strongly of medication? It's suffocating."

"Daisy needs nebulizer treatments every day."

"How can a little kid be so sick all the time? It's just because you're overly anxious. You're making her sick out of nowhere." Ava casually kicked a Play-Doh container sitting next to the couch with the tip of her shoe.

A little purple Play-Doh figure rolled out, coming to a crooked stop right at her feet.

"Don't step on that." My voice was barely a whisper.

Ava looked down, but instead of backing off, she lifted her shoe. "You mean this trash?"

When her sole came down, the little clay figure's head, body, and arms snapped into three pieces.

"Why keep this kind of junk around, anyway? Sophia just bought Theo a mechanical keyboard worth over a thousand dollars. Now that's a gift."

Carved right onto the clay figure's belly was the word "Daddy."

Daisy's hands were so small that she struggled to shape human features. She had remade and ruined it three times before finally getting it right. She couldn't bear to give it to him earlier, saying she wanted to wait until our wedding photoshoot day to secretly slip it into Theo's pocket.

"What are you staring at, Charlotte?" Ava rubbed the bottom of her shoe on the floor mat. "It's just a few pieces of clay. You're not about to throw another crazy fit, are you?"

I crouched down and picked up the broken head. One of the arms had been flattened completely and could never be restored.

I slipped the broken pieces into the pocket of the jacket Daisy had worn last night, folded the clothes neatly, and placed them back onto her little chair.

Debra's expression softened slightly. "See? It's so much better when you're reasonable. Theo stayed up all night taking care of Sophia and just went to sleep. Don't go pestering him."

"She has a fever?"

"She was out in that terrible storm! How could she not catch a fever?"

Debra opened the fridge and pointed to the chicken inside. "Simmer fresh chicken soup and bring it over to Sophia by noon.

"Make sure you skim off all the skin and fat, and don't add any heavy spices or pepper. She gets heart palpitations, so she can't handle anything too harsh."

Ava chimed in, "Use Daisy's pink insulated thermos. It keeps heat longer, and Sophia always misses warm meals when she's at the hospital."

"I'm not making it."

Debra thought she misheard. "What?"

"If she wants to drink it, tell Theo to make it for her."

"Theo's a guy. How would he know how to do any of that? You're his wife—what's wrong with taking care of his friend?"

"Friend?"

"Drop the sarcastic attitude. Sophia was almost scared into a heart attack last night, and she still tried to convince Theo to go home to you." Debra shoved the chicken right toward my face. "Hurry up and get to work. She needs to have it before noon."

I stood up and looked straight into her eyes. "Whether she lives or dies is none of my damn business."

Debra's hand struck my face, leaving a loud ringing in my ears.

"How did you get so vile? You couldn't even give us a son, and you treat a weak, sick kid like a precious treasure. If Sophia had married into our family, she'd never be as clueless and disrespectful as you!"

Ava grabbed her arm. "Debra, don't get yourself worked up. Sophia's still waiting for her soup."

I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth with my thumb and pulled our family records and identity documents out from the drawer.

Debra took two quick steps after me. "What are you grabbing those papers for?"

"To handle some paperwork."

"Who are you trying to scare with the kid this time? Theo already agreed to redo the wedding photoshoot, and you're still not satisfied?"

I grabbed my suitcase handle. "You can keep this shabby old apartment for yourselves."

"Charlotte, if you walk out that door, don't you ever come back!"

"Fine."

Even as the door swung shut, her voice echoed from behind.

"It's fine if you leave, but simmer the soup first! Sophia's waiting to drink it at noon!"

"Charlotte, you're here."Theo leaned against the edge of the bed and sat up, a faint smile actually gracing his face.A nurse was in the middle of replacing his bed pad. "Family members, please step outside and wait a moment.""She's not family," he blurted out before quickly changing his words. "Well, she still is right now."I stood outside the doorway, waiting until the nurse finished taking away the soiled bedding.Theo had no sensation in his lower body. For the rest of his life, he would be completely dependent on a wheelchair and daily nursing care.Sitting right on the bedside table was that patched-up Play-Doh figure."Did Mandy's mom tell you that I could sit up now?""No.""Then did you come to see me?"I placed the divorce agreement in front of him."Sign it."The smile on his face froze completely. "I thought...""You thought what?""That day, you signed the consent form for my emergency surgery.""I was the only person at the scene who could sign it.""An

[Sophia's been taken into custody.] Ezra sent ‌a text message.[Debra suffered a stroke last night. Their apartment and car in the city have both been listed for sale.][Theo didn't go back, though. He's still in town.]I turned off my phone after reading it and packed Daisy's urn into a waterproof bag.Over the town loudspeakers, emergency evacuation orders echoed repeatedly."Residents in the West Lane, leave first! Don't wait! The hurricane made landfall early!"Theo went door to door, knocking and helping elderly townspeople with mobility issues get onto the emergency transport vehicles first. When he passed by me, he paused."Let me carry the box for you.""No need.""Then stay right behind me.""Focus on yourself."He didn't say another word, but he carefully tucked a spare pediatric inhaler into his emergency bag.Suddenly, Jenna Thomas ran back from the end of the line, her voice frantic. "Mandy is missing! She was on the truck just a second ago! Has anyone seen

"Is this your medical report?"Theo stared at the date, his fingers pressing heavily into the paper."You were at the flea market that day too?""I was.""But after I woke up in the hospital, my mother told me you fell at home...""She lied to you.""This says emergency C-section..." His voice began to falter. "Was Daisy born that night?""Yes."Sophia scrambled forward to snatch the paper. "Theo, medical records can easily be forged. She's just trying to drive a wedge between us!"I brought up the payment receipt on my phone. "The invoice number, timestamp, and admission ID are all here. Look it up yourself."Theo didn't reach for the phone."What really happened back then?""You were cornered by debt collectors outside the warehouse. They came at you with wooden planks, so I threw myself in front of you and took a blow straight to the stomach."After you passed out, I called the ambulance. Sophia had been hiding behind the shutter door the entire time. She only came out

"Charlotte, a hundred thousand dollars. Sign the papers."Sophia tossed a duffel bag onto the table. Several stacks of cash spilled out from the top.Two of her friends stood right behind her, one holding up a phone and recording."Turn the camera off," I said, looking straight at her.The woman holding the phone took a step back nervously. "We're just keeping a record for evidence, so you don't take the money and play dumb later."Sophia pulled off her sunglasses. "Theo canceled my cards and stopped paying my rent, and it's all because you're acting like a tragic victim in front of him!""Then go take it up with him.""He's out of his mind right now. He only listens to you. As long as you sign the divorce papers, I can take him back to the city, and you won't have to see his face every day either."I didn't touch the bag of money. "He was garbage to begin with. If you want him, feel free to pick him up."Sophia's expression darkened. "Don't think that just because Daisy is de

"Charlotte, you're scaling the fish backward! You're tearing the skin right off."My aunt took my hand and turned the knife in the right direction."I'm sorry.""Why are you apologizing to me? Didn't you know how to do this before?""I forgot."In the two weeks since returning to the coastal fishing town, I kept forgetting things. I forgot to turn off the faucet or whether I had already added salt, and I would still reflexively set out a small extra bowl during dinner.Daisy's urn sat inside the wooden cabinet my grandmother left behind, right next to her unused nebulizer mask."Charlotte, there's a man kneeling outside!" The neighbor's little girl ran inside, holding half a piece of rice cake in her hand. "He says his name is Theo."I walked over to the front door.Theo had lost a lot of weight. Stubbled dark hair covered his jawline, and he was clutching a small Play-Doh figure that had been molded back together. The figure's head was crooked, and its broken arms were wrappe

"You're only asking now? What, were you waiting to host her memorial service first?"Dr. Stevenson's voice echoed relentlessly through the speaker."Her mother signed the death certificate all by herself. She took her to be cremated all by herself. And you, the father, didn't even pick up your phone!"The phone slipped right out of Theo's hand, crashing onto the floor."Which Daisy?" he stammered, bending down to pick up the phone. His fingers trembled so violently that he tried and failed several times to get a grip on it. "Could it be someone with the same name? Dr. Stevenson sees dozens of kids every single day. He must have gotten it wrong!"No one answered.Sophia was the first to react. "Theo, Charlotte might have just taken someone else's death certificate... She loves Daisy so much. How could she wait until today to say anything—"Theo shoved her away before she could finish.Sophia stumbled and collapsed right next to the shattered pieces of glass, a sharp shard slic
