I can’t believe this, I’ve done it again. Everything around me is slowly catching on fire. Why can’t I learn to control myself?
I accidentally set my shed on fire and the flames have started spreading to the evergreen trees that are surrounding it. This could be really bad.
All my paintings are in that shed. There is no way I can save them, and they are going to be lost in the fire.
The fire crackles and roars around me, and I can feel the heat burning hot. It hasn’t rained in at least a week, and the forest is very dry.
I begin choking on the smoke. I look up and the smoke in the sky is black and thick. The smell of burnt pine is making it hard to breathe.
Panic is setting in as I realize I have no way to put the fire out. Anytime trouble starts I have a hard time focusing and I can’t think. Come on Clara you have to do something. I look around me, I can feel my heart racing faster than the speed of light. I see through the sweat dripping in my eyes, my gardenhose in the lake I can use to put to try putting out the fire.
Surprisingly, I hear fire sirens in the distance. I am in the middle of nowhere on highway 17 and thought for sure I was on my own. Someone must have seen all the smoke and called the fire department when they were driving by. I am not sure how I am going to explain this to them, but I am glad to have the help.
I grab the hose and start spraying the shed. The water coming from my small hose is barely making a dent in the fire that is beginning to consume everything around me.
It doesn’t take long for the fire to spread to all the trees that are surrounding my shed. This fire has gotten out of control and if I don’t do something fast the whole forest might burn down.
Just in time, a small truck with sirens pulls down my long dirt driveway and parks. A tall man in fire gear jumps out and runs over. He looks alone. If it’s just him we are likely doomed.
“Is there any water on this property?” He asked without hesitation.
“Yes, the lakes right over here” I said pointing to the lake behind my small wood Bunkie.
The firefighter quickly runs to the truck, pulls out a large hose, and brings one end and a large pump over to the water. He places the hose in the water and turns the machine on. I can tell he’s done this probably dozens of times.
Once the hose is in the water he sprinted back to the truck and begins to turn the nozzles. Water starts pouring out of the hose. He runs over to the fire and pointed the stream of water at the base of the trees that are blazing with fire.
I help him with my small hose and together we attempt to put the fire out. After what feels like an eternity the flames are under control, and it finally it looks like everything might be okay. The air is Smokey.
Together we put the last of the fire that I started out, I breathe a sigh of relief. This is the second time I have almost burned a forest down.
The firefighter puts the hose down and walks over to where I am standing and asks, “What exactly happened?”
I can’t tell him the truth. I try to form a lie on the spot. I am not a great liar and what can I even say?
“I was working in my shed and the something electrical caught fire.” I lied; it was the best I could do under pressure “it happened so fast. I am so glad you got here when you did.”
He squints his eyes while he’s listening to my fabricated story, I am not sure if he believed me or not.
“Interesting” he said finally. “You need to be more careful out here you could have burned the whole forest down.”
“Thank you for coming when you did” I said, “I thought I was all alone out here.”
“What are you even doing out here?” He asked, “you are in the middle of nowhere. You’re lucky I have a small camp near by with a small fire equipment.”
He takes off his helmet and I see his face for the first time. The man that saved me is quite handsome. He has dirty blonde hair and the greenest eyes I have ever seen. His eyes look soft like he’s holding onto something deep in his heart.
“I am Ben” he holds out his gloved hand.
“My name is Clara” I said shaking his wet glove. “What are you doing out here in the middle of nowhere?”
“I own a small property down the highway and luckily I saw all the smoke and came over” he begins “I am a volunteer firefighter out here. But it has been a while since I put out a fire.”
“Well, I am lucky to have you out here.” I said. A man in a uniform is sexy, but a firefighter who just saved my cabin from flames has given me a feeling in my stomach I’ve never felt before.
A tree beside us bursts back into flames and Ben runs to get the hose to put it out.
Oh no not again.
I look around at the strange contraptions and torture tools all over the walls. There is a strange aura in this room; bad things have happened here. I can feel it. What the fuck is all this for? There is no way this has always been down here the whole time and I didn’t know. I wonder if Tyler even knew, there’s no way he could be in on this. “What is this place?” Ben said walking in behind me. “I’m not sure” I whispered looking at the wood table in the centre of the room, there are restraints in all four corners. Who were they torturing down here? I had to believe they were doing it for a good reason. I walk further into the room and see a row of red leather books all along the back wall on shelves. I rip a book from the shelf, flipping through the pages; every spell in here is black magic. I grab another book and another. They are all full of black magic, words of evil, each book darker and darker. I flip to a page that says “removing souls, the patient must endure mont
“Let’s go inside, we have no idea what we are up against” Rod suggested. He’s right the house is safe, guarded by strong magical wards. The hunters were gone, but who knows if they would come back. I didn’t want to be out here defenceless if they did. The house is silent, no one else is here. “So what do we do now?” Ben asked. I look at Ben, I am still so mad that I might throw him into a wall. “You got my brother kidnapped” I screamed, “ I want you out of my house!”I can feel myself getting worked up again. “No it’s not my fault, I knew the hunter was coming here and tried to stop him” Ben defended, “he told me my next assignment was to find a witch who can control the wind, I knew right away that he was talking about Tyler. I came here to try and protect him. You were so mad at me I didn’t think you would listen so I didn’t ask for your help.”I looked at him and my heart broke for him. “Please you have to believe me” he begged. Something in his eyes made me belie
“Please don’t hurt him” I begged as it begins to rain. “Hurt him? Who said anything about that. I am not a monster” he grinned. When I see his face I realize this is the same hunter that stole my blood from the underground prison. “You are a monster, you’re responsible for killing all those witches” I shouted. “Alright, maybe I am a monster, but lucky for you, we need him alive” the hunter said. Hunters kill witches to collect our powers. The more they kill the stronger they become. After all the recent deaths, I suspected this hunter was very powerful. “What do you want with him” Rod yelled. His voice is stern. “You are meddling in things you don’t understand, just leave now and no one has to die. I am taking him either way.”I wasn’t letting him take Tyler to that awful dungeon without a fight. I charge the hunter flames coming from my hands. “Oh aren’t you precious? “ he laughed at me, “why do you stupid witches always chose to fight? It’s exhausting and so time cons
I call my brother; no answer, next my mother and father; same no answer. Why is it when you call for something important people never answer?“Where are we going?” Rod asked following me to my car. “To my house” I said, “it’s a long drive so we better leave now.”You would think by now witches would have a better way to get around. “Why would Ben look at your house for you if he knows you’re here?” he questioned me.“Because he’s not looking for me, he’s looking for my brother Tyler. He is the only witch I know who can control the wind” I said, “Ben probably found him through me.”Ben was smarter than I thought, or he has been watching me and my family for a long time. “Thank you for helping me” he said as I put the car in drive. “I’m not helping you. I’m not letting Ben hurt my brother. We need answers and it looks like working with you is my best chance at finding them” I told him. We sit in silence for a while and I finally say “That spell you mentioned about tele
The next morning, I wake up groggy, the strange words from my mother's journal haunting my once peaceful dreams. My plan today is to find Ben and I’m going to do whatever it takes. I get up and put the kettle on. I hear my moms voice in my head “ a strong day starts with a strong drink.” I was never going to forgive her. I’m going to have to use a location crystal to find Ben. I don’t think we have any here, but the basement would be the best place to look.I’m about to take my first sip of coffee when I hear a car door slam outside. It startles me and I nearly drop my coffee. Who could that be? I peek through the curtain. A tall figure is walking confidently up the path, his hair damp from the rain. How did he get through the crystals? He couldn’t be a hunter or he would have set off the traps. The fear of being locked in that cage rushes back. After everything that’s happened, I’m ready to attack. I open the door before he steps foot on the porch and I yell. “Who the h
I have never read anything like this before. It must be dark magic. “Taking a witches blood is how you separate their soul from their bodies. It is a process that takes months. The process involves..”I flip the page and the rest are blacked out with ink. Who would do this to the pages? Is that why Hope took my blood. Are they going to separate my soul from my body? The only person who would know is my mother, but then I would have to explain how I got the book and that involved getting Tyler in trouble.Whatever the hunter is up to is something that I have never heard of until now. I guess this secret runs deeper than I thought. I wonder how many more witches will die before we find out. My heart sinks for Hope, being forced to hurt innocent people. I better just go to bed. ***Later the next day, Tyler and I are sitting outside enjoying the sound of the waves crashing on the beach. I wasn’t sure if I would ever feel safe in the water again after what happened with Ben. “R
