Ben sprays the hose on the tree almost as if he was waiting for the fire to start. God dammit Clara, pull it together.

“That was weird. I guess there was a small amber on that tree” he said shaking his head.

“I guess so” I said looking away, knowing full well that wasn’t the reason the tree caught fire.

“Well, I’ll leave you to whatever it is you were doing.” He said.

“Thanks for your help, I am not sure what I would have done without you.” I said.

“I’m glad I got here when I did before the whole forest went up in flames.” He joked.

“I have a petty big mess to clean up now” I said looking at all the burnt trees around us. This is going to take me days, maybe even weeks to clean up.

“Do you want some help?” He asked looking around at the burnt chaos all around us.

Even though I could use the help his presence made me nervous and I didn’t want to risk lighting anything on fire again, especially in front of him so I said “no I can handle it.”

“Are you sure?” He asked skeptical.

I can’t say I blame him. I’m pretty small but I have some tricks up my sleeve.

“Oh yeah, I’ll have this cleaned up in no time” I said smiling.

“If you say so. Take care and stay away from anything flammable” he joked.

“Nothing flammable for me for at least the rest of today” I joked back.

He smiled as he gets back in the truck. He rolls down the window and said “maybe I’ll see you around sometime, if you need anything I’m right down the street.”

“Maybe sometime” I waved, but I knew full well it was a good idea to stay away from him and my mother would never approved.

I couldn’t help the small part of me that wanted to see him again, even though it was a bad idea for me to get involved romantically with someone right now or ever.

He pulls down the long driveway, this time without the sirens on, disappearing into the trees as if he was never here.

I get to work cleaning up the burnt debris, piling the branches beside my fire pit. Most of the burnt trees are still standing and will hopefully come back to life, but the shed is beyond repair.

An hour passes and the sun is beginning to set. The rest of the work will have to wait until tomorrow. Once the sun goes down the forest is pitch black and I don’t want to be working out here in the dark.

I decide to start a fire to burn the pile of wood I cleaned up.

I focus on the fire pit to try starting a fire. I see a few sparks, but the fire doesn’t catch. Funny how the last fire I started almost burned down an entire forest by accident and now I can’t even get a spark to light.

I hear my moms voice in my head “why don’t you try harder.”

I sigh, I am such a failure to my family. I’ll probably be out here forever at this rate.

I refocus my energy and it takes a few tries, but I am finally able to get a small spark started in the fire pit. The wood started to crackle lighting up the burnt branches.

It takes me a couple of hours, but I finish burning through all the wood from the pile. Once the fire is almost out, I decide to turn in for the night.

I head inside hanging a protection jar above the closed door. You can never be too safe when you are in the forest alone.

I head into the small kitchen, I turn on the tap and pour glass of water. I haven’t eaten anything all afternoon, so open my cupboard looking for a quick snack, I settle on some crackers and nuts.

I see my bed from the kitchen and the exhaustion from all the work I did finally sets in. My fat orange cat Archie is already fast asleep in the corner of the room on a chair, he doesn’t even flinch with all the noise I am making. It doesn’t surprise me; he is not bothered by most things. I am glad to have his company out here.

I finish my crackers and water and head into my bedroom leaving the door open a crack behind me.

Shortly after I lay down, I feel Archie jump up and lay down on my pillow beside my head. I wasn’t looking forward to the phone call I would have to have with my mother tomorrow. She was going to be pissed. What else was new?

I push the thought of her yelling at me away and it doesn’t take me long to fall into an unrestful sleep full of unsettling dreams of a man whose face I don’t recognize, but my soul yearns for.

“I feel like you aren’t telling me everything” Tyler said during the car ride. He knew I was an awful liar. “I don’t have time to explain everything to you right now” I snapped and I didn’t want to anyways. “We have some time and you look like you need to get some things off your chest. Come on you know I’m here for you.”“If you thought I was crazy you before” I laughed, “you might thing I belong in a nut house now.”“No, I’ll believe you no matter how crazy it all sounds- I promise.” He sounded sincere. I started to tell him about my soul living forever and how I’d been around for over 500 years. I told him about all the lives I’d lived; even the one I where I was a hunter. Then I told him about how I screwed things up with both Ben and Rod; which in some weird way was the most painful part. “Tyler I was responsible for building the hunter army that is hurting all those witches.”“Clara you know that wasn’t your fault right?”“That’s where you’re wrong. I was their lea

I’m back outside my bunkie, oh how I missed this place and the days where all I had to worry about was lightning forests on fire. I turn around and the shed hasn’t been burnt down yet. It worked and the crystal is gone just like the dragon told us. Even though I am not in any immediate danger I want to talk to my mother as soon as I can. I call her cell phone- no answer, we were going to have a serious talk about this. On the bright side, now I had an idea of where to look for her. But I needed help, going alone would be too dangerous and I only had once chance at this. Now that I know how to teleport I travel to the cabin where Ben’s staying, this is going to come in handy. I spot his motorcycle and the small fire truck out front; good he’s here. I run up to the door and knock hard. “Hello” he opened the door. Once he saw who I was there was a flicker of disbelief. They say you have one second to see someone’s true reaction on their face and I know he recognizes me. “B

I remember the kings voice warning me “not all the lives are good.” Like he knew all along, but didn’t want to tell me. I turn towards him and he has a shameful look on his face “why didn’t you warn me.”“Somethings you have to find out on your own Clara” he sad sadly. I had one life left to remember and it was the worst one I’d ever lived; it also happened to be my last life. I was a hunter and not just one of them, their leader. I’m so ashamed I once fell to dark magic and even worse - Damien was my lover. I had helped him slaughter so many witches. Or more like he had helped me. Tears came to my eyes, I was the reason they were so strong. Damien was in a different body which explains why I didn’t recognize him before. His soul was too evil, I had blocked him out. It was my idea to create the ritual with the elemental powers. All of this was my fault. The evil I created got my mother and Hope killed. A small part of me missed the feeling of being so powerful from stealing

Why should I make a deal with you when I can just melt you and take the crystal once you’re dead” I yelled.“Because before you kill me I can take down at least one of your friends, I suspect you don’t want that. Plus I have something to offer you” he pleaded. “How do I know you won’t betray me like everyone else” I screamed. “Clara, your anger is not with him, he is but a protector” the king whispers to me. “We can’t trust him. He did eat me.” The last time the king and I were looking for the crystal it was for our own personal gain. “His job is to protect this magic at all costs. This crystal in the wrong hands could destroy the world- you know that.”“Listen to the old man” the dragon hissed. King Salazar was a wise man, I’d learnt many lives ago to trust him. “What can you offer me?” I pushed the magma back into the earth, I’d spare him for now. “I will give you one of my scales, they are indestructible and can be used to create potions you’ve never heard of” he of

“Thank you for freeing us” they spoke, “too long were we under control by that horrendous demon, watching all those poor people being murdered.”Have they been trapped here all these years? It must have been hundreds of years since the king and I had been here last. “We are glad to help, would you mind pointing us in the direction of a safe camp?” the king asked. “Please stay the night here. We will keep you safe, our magic is strong. It’s why the demon consumed us.” The trees creaked around us but they did not move. “Thank you, then it is settled we will make camp here for the night ” the king takes off his backpack pulling out a small tent. It doesn’t take us long to set up camp with our small sleep tents. I start a fire for us, the trees groan at the smoke. If I didn’t know any better it seemed like they wanted me to put the fire out. “Don’t worry, I won’t let it burn you” I whispered. The trees seemed to calm with my reassurance. The king and Tyler join me around th

The next morning I wake before dawn just like we planned. I grab the survival pack I assume one of the servants left for me at my door and sneak out of the palace. I find Tyler and the king waiting for me at our agreed upon location just outside the city. The king’s absence would only upset his people so he had a few trusted soldiers covering for him. I didn’t say goodbye to either Rod or Ben, they were both furious with me. Good thing I was probably going to die and would never have to face either of them again. “Where’s Rod?” Tyler asked. “He’s not coming” I shot him a glance and he knew not to ask why.“Are we ready then?” King Salazar asked, “I don’t want to be gone from my people for long.”Tyler and I nodded. I was grateful he was coming at all. The king downs a potion and his tail is replaced with two human legs. “I was wondering how you were going to walk up a mountain” Tyler said. We all hold hands and I picture the bottom of the Appalachian mountain. There’s

The next morning, I wake up groggy, the strange words from my mother's journal haunting my once peaceful dreams. My plan today is to find Ben and I’m going to do whatever it takes.
