Darius's POV

The study door banged closed behind Malik hard enough to make the bottles on my desk rattle. I didn't care. I would like to know about this palace. That I had missed letting them all know, that another Alpha was swooping to circle my mate as if she were a weak animal about to be taken down.

“You need to go,” I said, barely containing my wolf. He scratched me up inside and out, ordering me to move and rip this competition apart. "Now."

Malik was bold enough to smile. With a nonchalant confidence, he moved to the center of the room, his silver hair glinting in the lamp light. “Are you giving the orders, Alpha Darius? Last time I looked, we are equals. And you don’t own Lily to order suitors away.”

"She's my mate." It was growling as the words came out.

"A mate you rejected." his green eyes dared. “A comrade you allowed to be tortured in your dungeons. And what is your true claim to her?”
