Darius's POV

The council chamber was a tomb — cold and silent, heavy with judgment. In a semicircle, eight elders withered from age and loneliness displayed varying degrees of anger, disappointment and disgust on their ancient faces. In the center was Elder Marcus, my father’s best friend for as long as I could remember, but he seemed to have aged ten years since yesterday.

"Alpha Darius," he said, all formality now, "you are brought before this council to answer for acts that conflict with our most revered traditions. Did you realize the seriousness of what you were doing?”

"Yes." My voice was steady but for the fire of shame raging within me. “I marked a woman against her will. I raped her and our customs.”

"And you admit this freely?"

"I do. What I did, there’s nothing to justify.”

The corners of Elder Thompson's face reddened with anger as he leaned forward. "There's been no such wilful violation of pack law in all of my six decades on this council. Markings by force Are not allow

Lily's POVThe rogues fought in eerie synchrony, their attacks not intended to kill, but to entrap. I had already known, too late, that I was being steered away from the main defensive positions, from the other warriors who might have shielded me.My black wolf was intoxicated with power, I smashed another down and my jaws bit through bone as my newfound strength made ending their lives all too easy. The Snow Wolf powers Miriam had said I would be able to use were all working in full force now--This was literally it; my bite wounds closed up almost immediately, I'd been running faster than I had thought possible, and fighting as if it was someone else doing it instictually as never before. But there were too many of them.As I whirled around, three Rogues lunged forward at the same time and I killed two while dashing under the third. My fur was clotted with blood, the taste of iron filling my mouth as I waged a defensive war. My muscles ached from the effort, my lungs searched for air

Darius's POVTension buzzed in the war room as my council leaned over a map-strewn strategy table, with the exaggerated-ink-map writing on its surface portending to blood not yet spilled. Red DAP points were areas of weakness along our borders, blue denoted our positions on the line and black followed the projected tracks Selene's forces would use.“The anonymous warning mentioned three specific strike points,” Marcus said, pointing at the southern border. "Here, here, and here. But I don't trust it. It feels too convenient.""You think it's misinformation?" Beta James leaned in, looking at the positions.“I think it’s whoever sent that warning wants us ready but not complacent,” Marcus said. “That’s true, but it’s probably not the whole truth.”I attempted to tune into their words, the tactical debates which would decide whether my pack lived or died. But the bond thrummed under my skin like a second pulse, insistent and distracting. Lily was I could sense her somewhere inside the pa

Lily's POV"Lily," she said warmly. ”Alpha Darius had requested that you met him here. He thought you'd be curious about your heritage and that I could answer better than he could.”Of course. He had sent someone else, leaving me space and yet with the information I needed. Doing so was kind and maddening."You know about my mother?" I asked carefully.“Caroline was my friend,” added Miriam, seating herself upon a prostrate tree. “Not much, but I was aware of what she was. She succumbed to the wasting sickness that can attack Snow Wolves who hold in their nature too long.”The words struck me as a physical punch. “She died because she was hiding who she was?”“She was killed because she never truly awoke,” Miriam gently corrected. “The blood was there, latent, putting pressure on her body she couldn’t comprehend. Had she known, had she fully awakened, perhaps she would have lived."I collapsed to the grass, my legs turned to jelly. That my mother died because she was never able to fin

Malik's POV"Alpha Malik," she purred in a sonorous voice as she raised her head to allow strands of platinum hair shine under the broken rafters' dim light. "I was afraid you wouldn't come.“It’s just, I gave my word,” I said bluntly, looking around at the faces surveying her. Panting, furious wolves who’d discovered reason in her vendetta. Dangerous, but not disciplined. “I need to talk about our deal.”Selene’s smile was all teeth, no heat. “Our deal to take out Darius and seize what should have always been mine.”I drew nearer, pretending to be the eager conspirator. "You mentioned a plan. Before I throw my full resources, I want to know the details.”“Clever,” she said, indicating that I should follow her to a shaky table with rudimentary maps spread on it. “The full moon is in three days. The wolves will be distracted, less able to control the lunar pulling. That's when we strike."I looked at the maps, saw where she had drawn placement for attack. "You're targeting the southern

Darius's POVIt sat on my desk like an accusation, the edges worn with the handling of my father’s hands, the seal long since broken. I had found it in the locked drawer of his study back at home, buried underneath fake documents and treaty papers. He'd kept secrets. So many secrets. And now, that secret might be all that could help Lily figure out what was happening to her.I was shaking as I reread the lines, inscribing them into my brain so that nuance never faded. To my son,I laid the letter aside and my thoughts whirled as they had been during those long hours. The First Snow Wolf Queen. The bloodline of legends, of the wolves who could cure with a touch, talk with the land itself, had strength surpassing even that of the strongest alphas. And Lily carried that blood. My forced mark had only awakened her wolf—it had ignited her line, unleashing strength that'd slumbered during the course of her entire life for the perfect prompting.“By the Moon Goddess,” I whispered. "What have

Lily's POV“Much,” answered Marcus, throwing me a tunic. "Much better. You're picking it up quicker than any wolf I ever trained.”I yanked the fabric over my head, unable to contain the small smile that pulled at my lips. "I had a good teacher."“You had some raw potential.” He circled me with an appraising eye. "I just helped you unlock it. The strength was always there; it just got buried under years of believing you were weak.”"Again," Marcus commanded. “Then tilt and hold for 10 minutes.”I clamped my eyes shut, seeking out that place inside where the wolf was there. She answered in a rush, hungry and sharp, driving forward again as bones reconfigured themselves and hairs rushed to the surface of my skin. The shift that had once felt like being torn away now felt like coming home. With my eyes open, the world seemed to focus in sharper relief — colors more vivid, scents more intense, sounds clearer. My wolf purred in satisfaction, pacing around as Marcus smiled his approval."Ex
