鷹山翔一に囚われてから4年目、彼には婚約者がいた。

「本当に翔一に言わないのか？今伝えれば、もしかしたら戻ってくるかもしれないぞ」てきた。

私はしばらく考えたが、やはりやめた。

心変わりした人に、自分の傷を見せる必要はなかった。それでも、翔一に会って、協力してもらいたいことがある。

この病気では死ぬことはない。海外にはこのような症状を対象にした療養所がある。しかし、その費用は非常に高額だ。

両親は早くに亡くなり、身寄りもいない私は、自分のことを翔一に任せるしかなかった。

事前に翔一の秘書にアポを取らずに会社を訪れたところ、紗江子もそこにいた。

彼女の声は小さく、優しいトーンだった。「皆、翔一が心に抱いている伝説の『手の届かない憧れるだけの存在』だって言うけど、今本人を見た限り、彼が若い頃のセンスはそんなに良くなかったみたいね」

同僚が小声で笑いながら、媚びるように言った。「彼女なんか、佐藤さんには到底敵わないのよ」

「佐藤さんは知らないでしょ。会社での美咲の地位なんて、通りすがりの犬にも蹴られそうなもんだ」

彼らが言っていることは全て事実なので、私は何も感じなかった。怒る理由もない。

誰もが想像しないだろう。外では、翔一が長年心に抱き続けている女だと言われている私が、実際には路傍の犬以下の扱いを受けていることを。

私が黙っているのを見て、紗江子は拳を柔らかい布に当てたような虚しさを感じたのか、私を一瞥してから声を上げて続けた。「聞いたところによると、あんたは翔一が大変な時に離れたそうじゃない？それが今になってまた現れるなんてね」

「男を惹きつけるために、引いたり押したりするのは確かに効果的だけど、翔一は普通の男じゃないわよ」

「お金が目当てなら、私が助けてあげてもいいわ。でも、あんたの条件じゃあ、大した額は手に入らないわね」

紗江子は前髪をかき上げ、眉間にあるほくろを露わにした。そこで初めて、私と少し似ていることに気づいた。ただ、私のほくろは6年前に除去したものだ。

私が依然として黙っているのを見て、ついに我慢ができなくなり、水を入れに来た同僚に向かって問い詰めた。「あんた、受付としてどうなの？こんな無関係な人間をどうして簡単に入れたの？」

指示された女の同僚は困ったように私を一瞥し、申し訳なさそうに説明した。「でも、鷹山社長がそうおっしゃって......」

「そんなの関係ないわ。今すぐこの女を追い出して。もし拒むなら、あんたが辞めなさい」

この会社で唯一私に親切にしてくれたのはこの受付の彼女だけだったので、困らせたくなかった。「翔一に会ったらすぐに出ていくから、無理に追い出す必要はないわ」
