Chapter 3

作者: Evie
"Sorry to keep you waiting." Sebastian's voice was unusually gentle, his eyes filled with a tenderness I'd never seen before. The love in his gaze was so unmistakable that it almost hurt to look at.

"You must be starving. Come on, let's eat."

Isabelle pouted playfully. "I've been hungry forever! Mom and I finished preparing everything ages ago. We've been waiting for you two busy men to come home."

"We got held up on the way," my father explained casually as he took his seat. "They found a skeleton at a construction site, so Sebastian and I stopped by to take a look."

The moment he mentioned the skeleton, Isabelle's hand froze halfway to her mouth. She quickly recovered, forcing an awkward smile as she asked, "W-Was it the construction site near where that case happened seven years ago?"

My mother's fork slipped from her fingers and clattered against her plate. A complicated look flickered across her face before anger quickly took its place.

She shot my father an irritated glare. "Why would you bring up something so unpleasant at the dinner table?"

Before my father could respond, Isabelle lowered her eyes, guilt clouding her expression. "It's all my fault, Mom. I shouldn't have brought it up. Did I… make you think of Chloe again?"

Sebastian slammed his spoon onto the table, his expression turning ice-cold. Even in front of my parents, he made no effort to conceal the hatred he'd harbored for me all these years.

"That's enough! Don't you dare say that name. It's filthy coming out of your mouth."

A flicker of triumph flashed in Isabelle's eyes, but she quickly masked it with a look of wounded innocence. "Sebastian, please don't be like that. Mom and Dad are right here…"

"Sebastian is absolutely right!" My mother reached for Isabelle's hand, holding it with a tenderness that made her next words even crueler.

"I've considered that woman dead for years. We never had such a disgraceful daughter! As far as I'm concerned, Sebastian is our only son, and you're our daughter-in-law. That's how it's been for the past seven years, and that's how it'll stay!"

My father wore an equally grim expression. His voice was cold and merciless, like a judge delivering a final sentence.

"She chose to betray everything she stood for just to protect a criminal. She's a disgrace to the entire police force! She should've died at the killer's hands seven years ago. At least then, she would've spared this family the shame!"

The three people I'd once held closest to my heart sat around the dinner table, speaking of me with nothing but disgust and contempt, as though I'd never been their daughter at all. Each word cut deeper than the last, tearing my soul apart until the pain became almost unbearable.

I wanted to scream, to tell them how wrong they were, to make them understand that I'd never betrayed anyone and that I'd given my life trying to protect the truth. But they couldn't hear me. They couldn't even see me.

Silent tears streamed down my face and fell onto the cold floor, disappearing without a trace.

Once my family washed their hands of me, the atmosphere at the dinner table gradually returned to normal, as if I'd never existed.

My parents took turns holding Isabelle's children in their arms, feeding them bite by bite, their faces glowing with the simple joy of doting on their grandchildren. Beside them, Sebastian carefully picked the bones out of Isabelle's fish while chatting with her in a gentle, easygoing tone.

It was the kind of warm, happy family scene I'd imagined for myself countless times. Only now, someone else had taken my place.

Isabelle was sitting in the seat that should have been mine, living the life I'd once dreamed of sharing with Sebastian.

Back then, Sebastian was the youngest captain in the city's Homicide Division, and we met at a case review seminar. I'd presented a bold theory about a decomposed body, only to have nearly everyone in the room challenge my conclusions—everyone except Sebastian.

He'd stood up and supported my theory with sound investigative reasoning, calmly dismantling the objections one by one. In that moment, he'd seemed to shine brighter than anyone else in my eyes. I fell for him then and there, and it took three months of pursuing him before he finally agreed to be with me.

Once we were together, he'd treated me like I was the most precious person in the world. He remembered every little thing I told him, respected my work, and always made me feel that my dedication to forensic science was something to be proud of.

Everyone around us said I'd found the best man in the world, and I believed it, too. I truly thought we'd spend the rest of our lives together, growing old side by side.

Then Isabelle came along.

She was Sebastian's childhood neighbor, the little girl he'd grown up with, and she'd suddenly joined the police force as a criminal profiler. From the moment she arrived, I began to realize that the tenderness and patience I'd once thought belonged to me alone weren't mine to keep.

Back then, all it took was one phone call from Isabelle—claiming she'd been losing sleep over a case and was too scared to stay home alone—for Sebastian to drive two hours in the middle of the night just to bring her a cup of warm milk.

When my mother learned the whole truth, she collapsed on the spot. By the time she regained consciousness, something inside her had broken. Unable to accept that I was gone, she retreated into her own world, one where I was still alive. She would set two places at the dining table, serve a slice of my favorite pie, and gently call out to the empty chair across from her. "Come on, Chloe, sweetheart. Eat before it gets cold." Sometimes, she'd sit there for hours, talking to me as if nothing had happened. Then reality would come crashing back, and she'd stare at the empty seat before dissolving into desperate sobs, repeating the same words over and over. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry… I should never have believed her. Chloe, please, come home…" My father's hair turned gray almost overnight. He resigned from every position he'd held at the police department and shut himself away in my room, unable to face a world without me. Day after day, he carefully dusted my forensic science tex

If Sebastian hadn't heard that recording with his own ears, he never would have believed that the woman standing before him was a cold-blooded murderer, not in a million years. "Why are you just standing there? Come help me set the table. Dinner's ready," Isabelle urged as she carried the soup toward the dining room.Sebastian didn't move. He simply stood there, staring at her with a look that made her smile falter. "What's wrong, Sebastian?" she asked cautiously."Seven years ago…" He finally spoke, his voice so hoarse it sounded like sandpaper scraping against sandpaper. "Did Chloe really betray us?"All the color drained from Isabelle's face. The bowl of mushroom soup in her hands began to shake, sending hot liquid sloshing over the rim and onto the back of her hand. Yet she seemed completely oblivious to the burn. Forcing a smile, she tried to sound composed, but all she managed was a strained grimace. "Of course she did. I saw it with my own eyes, and all the evidence w

Sebastian's eyes were bloodshot as he took the recorder, his hands trembling, and entered my birthday. The screen flashed red."Incorrect passcode." He stared at the screen for a moment before something seemed to click. His fingers stiffly tapped in another sequence of numbers—his own birthday. This time, the lock clicked open. The moment the screen unlocked, he clutched his chest as a sharp, crushing pain seized his heart. His vision darkened, and he nearly crumpled to his knees. Robert took the recorder from his trembling hands and pressed Play. The forensic lab filled with a series of muffled yet painfully clear sounds. First came the noise of a struggle, followed by ragged breathing. Then came my final words, so faint and feeble that I could barely force them out. "Dad, Mom, Dr. Mitchell… I… don't know if I'll survive… but I want you to know that I love you." After a brief pause, my weak voice sounded again, carrying a trace of the stubbornness I'd never been able to

"Dr. Mitchell?" Sebastian stared at him in surprise. "What are you doing here?""I asked him to come." Michael stepped out of the forensic lab, his expression grave as he looked from Sebastian to my father. Complicated emotions flickered across his face. After a moment, he let out a heavy sigh. "Come inside. Both of you." The forensic lab was brightly lit, with harsh overhead lights illuminating every corner. At the center of the room, a spotlight shone directly on the autopsy table, where a battered skeleton lay motionless, partially cleared of the dirt and debris that had once covered it. The sight sent a chill through my father and Sebastian, filling them with inexplicable dread. The moment Robert saw the remains, he finally broke down. A strangled sob escaped his throat as tears streamed down his weathered face. My father stared at him in bewilderment, unable to make sense of what was happening. "Robert, what's going on?"Robert couldn't bring himself to answer. Inste

Now, her little princess was nothing more than a pile of dry bones, while the woman who had murdered her daughter basked in all the love and affection that had once been promised to her. But my heart had long since gone numb. I watched without feeling a thing as the family headed toward the movie theater, ready to enjoy a happy afternoon together. Just then, Sebastian's phone rang. It was Robert. "Sebastian, get to police headquarters immediately. Bring William, too!" Robert's tone brooked no argument. Before Sebastian could ask what was going on, the call abruptly ended. Sebastian let out a helpless sigh. "Looks like we're not seeing that movie after all."Isabelle immediately put on a sympathetic smile. "It's okay, Sebastian. Work comes first. Mom and I will take the kids to see it." Sebastian nodded, then turned to William, who had just received a call from his own department. "Dad, looks like we're heading out together." The moment Isabelle heard that, her pupils con

  • Forensic Queen Framed: My Bones Prove Them Wrong   Chapter 5

The day I went out on the case, the sky was overcast, with heavy clouds threatening to burst at any moment. Isabelle followed me around like a shadow, her eyes darting nervously from side to side, but I was too focused on the investigation to pay her much attention. Inside an abandoned chemical plant, I followed the clues to a concealed compartment where the key evidence against the serial killer was likely hidden. My entire task force had been working ourselves to the bone for months, and we were finally on the verge of cracking the case. I was so close to bringing everything to an end that I could almost taste the relief of finally getting my hands on the evidence. But before I could even celebrate, a dull thud sounded behind me.The killers had arrived. My heart lurched, and I instinctively shouted for Isabelle to take cover. But when I turned around, she was nowhere to be seen. A terrible sense of dread washed over me. Something was wrong. Without wasting another sec
