Chapter 4

作者: Evie
When Isabelle developed appendicitis, Sebastian left me waiting alone at the movie theater and never came back for our date. I had no choice but to walk home in the pouring rain.

On our anniversary, all she had to do was tell him she was feeling down, and he'd abandon our carefully planned evening to take her to the beach instead.

Each time, I tried to convince myself he was simply looking out for an old friend, but the excuses grew harder to swallow with every passing day.

We fought about it countless times, but no matter how much I begged him to consider my feelings or how deeply his actions hurt me, nothing ever changed. Whenever I brought it up, he shot me down with the same impatient excuses.

"Chloe, can you grow up already? She has no family here and no one to rely on. What's so wrong with me looking out for her?"

"I've spent the entire day working on cases. I'm exhausted. The last thing I need is to come home and argue with you about this."

"I don't have feelings for her. If I did, we'd have gotten together a long time ago! If you're determined to twist everything into something it's not, then I have nothing more to say!"

His words cut deeper with every argument, each one like a needle piercing my heart until I could barely stand the pain. I was exhausted, both emotionally and mentally, and I couldn't keep living like this.

In the end, I was the one who asked for a breakup, hoping that walking away would finally put an end to my suffering.

Instead, it felt as though the entire world had turned against me. My friends accused me of making a big deal out of nothing, and my mentor urged me not to make such a rash decision.

My own parents scolded me too, insisting, "You'll never find a man better than Sebastian in your entire life!"

Even Sebastian, his eyes bloodshot, demanded to know what he had to do to make me stop talking about breaking up.

With everyone dismissing my pain and refusing to understand why I'd reached my breaking point, I felt more alone than ever.

That was when Isabelle approached me on her own, asking to join the Scarlet Murders investigation as a consultant.

"I promise that once this collaboration is over, I'll request a transfer and disappear from your lives for good."

I refused at first, unwilling to let her insert herself into my investigation. But somehow, she always seemed to know where our team would be.

No matter which crime scene we visited, she'd turn up nearby as if by coincidence, then come up with one excuse after another to delay our progress. Her constant interference pushed me to the brink, and with the investigation at a standstill, I eventually had no choice but to give in.

I agreed to let her join the team, believing it was the only way to keep the case moving forward.

It was a compromise I would pay for with my life.

In the end, I was brutally tortured and murdered.

…

Back in the autopsy room, Robert leaned over my skeletal remains, examining every inch of my bones with a furrowed brow. Suddenly, something caught his eye.

He slipped on a pair of gloves and carefully ran his fingers along the jagged edge of one of my fractured ribs. Hidden among the damage was a tiny, deliberate mark, so subtle that it could easily have been mistaken for ordinary wear.

Before he could examine it further, a young officer burst into the room without knocking, barely able to contain his excitement.

"Dr. Mitchell! We've made a major discovery at the burial site!"

Robert immediately gathered a team and rushed to the scene.

At the bottom of the pit, forensic technicians had cleared away a section of soil, revealing a small black object sealed inside a vacuum-packed, waterproof bag.

One of the technicians carefully lifted it from the dirt and turned to Robert, looking stunned.

"Dr. Mitchell, is this… one of those miniature voice recorders from seven years ago?"

Robert froze. The moment he recognized the device, his eyes turned bloodshot, and his entire body began to tremble. It was the exact model he'd personally given me seven years earlier, telling me it was discreet and perfect for collecting evidence during sensitive investigations.

If the recorder had been buried here with my remains, then one thing became painfully clear—I had never betrayed them or fled to escape prosecution.

Yet for seven years, they'd convinced themselves I'd run away to avoid facing the consequences, never once considering that something far more sinister might have happened to me.

Robert's mind flashed back to the skeleton on the autopsy table and the deep cut marks covering my bones. A sickening realization washed over him as the pieces began to fall into place. The world seemed to spin around him, and he struggled to stay on his feet.

With trembling hands, he pulled out his phone and called the Homicide Division. His voice was hoarse as he barked out an order.

"Get Sebastian and William to headquarters immediately! Right now! Tell them we've uncovered new physical evidence in the case from seven years ago!"

He had barely ended the call when an excited shout rang out behind him. "Dr. Mitchell! The recorder still works!"

When my mother learned the whole truth, she collapsed on the spot. By the time she regained consciousness, something inside her had broken. Unable to accept that I was gone, she retreated into her own world, one where I was still alive. She would set two places at the dining table, serve a slice of my favorite pie, and gently call out to the empty chair across from her. "Come on, Chloe, sweetheart. Eat before it gets cold." Sometimes, she'd sit there for hours, talking to me as if nothing had happened. Then reality would come crashing back, and she'd stare at the empty seat before dissolving into desperate sobs, repeating the same words over and over. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry… I should never have believed her. Chloe, please, come home…" My father's hair turned gray almost overnight. He resigned from every position he'd held at the police department and shut himself away in my room, unable to face a world without me. Day after day, he carefully dusted my forensic science tex

If Sebastian hadn't heard that recording with his own ears, he never would have believed that the woman standing before him was a cold-blooded murderer, not in a million years. "Why are you just standing there? Come help me set the table. Dinner's ready," Isabelle urged as she carried the soup toward the dining room.Sebastian didn't move. He simply stood there, staring at her with a look that made her smile falter. "What's wrong, Sebastian?" she asked cautiously."Seven years ago…" He finally spoke, his voice so hoarse it sounded like sandpaper scraping against sandpaper. "Did Chloe really betray us?"All the color drained from Isabelle's face. The bowl of mushroom soup in her hands began to shake, sending hot liquid sloshing over the rim and onto the back of her hand. Yet she seemed completely oblivious to the burn. Forcing a smile, she tried to sound composed, but all she managed was a strained grimace. "Of course she did. I saw it with my own eyes, and all the evidence w

Sebastian's eyes were bloodshot as he took the recorder, his hands trembling, and entered my birthday. The screen flashed red."Incorrect passcode." He stared at the screen for a moment before something seemed to click. His fingers stiffly tapped in another sequence of numbers—his own birthday. This time, the lock clicked open. The moment the screen unlocked, he clutched his chest as a sharp, crushing pain seized his heart. His vision darkened, and he nearly crumpled to his knees. Robert took the recorder from his trembling hands and pressed Play. The forensic lab filled with a series of muffled yet painfully clear sounds. First came the noise of a struggle, followed by ragged breathing. Then came my final words, so faint and feeble that I could barely force them out. "Dad, Mom, Dr. Mitchell… I… don't know if I'll survive… but I want you to know that I love you." After a brief pause, my weak voice sounded again, carrying a trace of the stubbornness I'd never been able to

"Dr. Mitchell?" Sebastian stared at him in surprise. "What are you doing here?""I asked him to come." Michael stepped out of the forensic lab, his expression grave as he looked from Sebastian to my father. Complicated emotions flickered across his face. After a moment, he let out a heavy sigh. "Come inside. Both of you." The forensic lab was brightly lit, with harsh overhead lights illuminating every corner. At the center of the room, a spotlight shone directly on the autopsy table, where a battered skeleton lay motionless, partially cleared of the dirt and debris that had once covered it. The sight sent a chill through my father and Sebastian, filling them with inexplicable dread. The moment Robert saw the remains, he finally broke down. A strangled sob escaped his throat as tears streamed down his weathered face. My father stared at him in bewilderment, unable to make sense of what was happening. "Robert, what's going on?"Robert couldn't bring himself to answer. Inste

Now, her little princess was nothing more than a pile of dry bones, while the woman who had murdered her daughter basked in all the love and affection that had once been promised to her. But my heart had long since gone numb. I watched without feeling a thing as the family headed toward the movie theater, ready to enjoy a happy afternoon together. Just then, Sebastian's phone rang. It was Robert. "Sebastian, get to police headquarters immediately. Bring William, too!" Robert's tone brooked no argument. Before Sebastian could ask what was going on, the call abruptly ended. Sebastian let out a helpless sigh. "Looks like we're not seeing that movie after all."Isabelle immediately put on a sympathetic smile. "It's okay, Sebastian. Work comes first. Mom and I will take the kids to see it." Sebastian nodded, then turned to William, who had just received a call from his own department. "Dad, looks like we're heading out together." The moment Isabelle heard that, her pupils con

  • Forensic Queen Framed: My Bones Prove Them Wrong   Chapter 5

The day I went out on the case, the sky was overcast, with heavy clouds threatening to burst at any moment. Isabelle followed me around like a shadow, her eyes darting nervously from side to side, but I was too focused on the investigation to pay her much attention. Inside an abandoned chemical plant, I followed the clues to a concealed compartment where the key evidence against the serial killer was likely hidden. My entire task force had been working ourselves to the bone for months, and we were finally on the verge of cracking the case. I was so close to bringing everything to an end that I could almost taste the relief of finally getting my hands on the evidence. But before I could even celebrate, a dull thud sounded behind me.The killers had arrived. My heart lurched, and I instinctively shouted for Isabelle to take cover. But when I turned around, she was nowhere to be seen. A terrible sense of dread washed over me. Something was wrong. Without wasting another sec
