Chapter Five: The One Who Should’ve Bitten Me

Lyla

“This class gives me the creeps already,” Rina whispered beside me.

I leaned in. “Why?”

She pointed at the front. “Because he’s here.”

I followed her eyes.

And there he was.

The new boy.

Lucien.

Tall. Pale skin. Jet black hair falling into his eyes. He moved like wind — smooth and quiet. His lips were too red. His eyes too dark. He didn’t blink much.

Everyone in the class gave him space.

Even the professor.

“This is Advanced Elemental Control,” the professor said, clearing his throat. “Open your books. We’ll begin with flame casting and restraint.”

Lucien sat at the far corner, hands folded on the desk, not moving.

Rina leaned in again. “He’s the fourth one. The last Alpha.”

I blinked. “He’s a vampire?”

She nodded. “And probably hungry. Pray he ate before class.”

I tried to laugh, but… I felt it too.

That tension.

That pull.

Like something bad was about to happen.

We were halfway through class when it started.

Lucien’s hand gripped his desk.

His fingers turned white.

His breathing got heavier.

A boy beside him glanced his way and immediately moved his chair back.

Lucien slowly lifted his head.

His eyes glowed faint red.

Rina noticed.

She went stiff. “Lyla…”

I looked over.

Lucien wasn’t blinking.

His lips parted slightly… and I saw them.

Fangs.

Real ones.

My breath caught.

He stood up slowly, and the room went silent.

He started walking.

Toward me.

Every step was calm… but dangerous. Controlled. Like a lion in a cage that had just broken loose.

Rina jumped up. “Don’t come near her!”

Lucien didn’t speak.

He kept walking.

Students started backing away.

Rina grabbed my wrist tightly. “Lyla, don’t move. Don’t even breathe!”

“I’m okay,” I whispered.

“No, you’re not! He’s going to bite you!”

“Let me go and call someone, let me go and call someone to help us”

Then she ran — actually ran — out the classroom.

I sat frozen.

Lucien stopped right in front of me.

He leaned down slowly.

His face was inches from mine.

He wasn’t breathing heavy anymore.

He was calm.

Too calm.

He stared into my eyes.

Then he smiled.

A soft, almost sad smile.

And he whispered—

“Your blood… it’s not the kind I want to drink.”

“It’s the kind I want to be with.”

“It matches mine.”

“I think I want to fall in love with it.”

My mouth parted. But no words came out.

And just like that… he turned and walked away.

As if nothing happened.

Seconds later, the classroom door slammed open.

Dante walked in, chest rising and falling, eyes scanning the room.

His shirt was slightly soaked with sweat, like he had run there.

He stopped when he saw me — still seated. Safe. Untouched.

Lucien was already gone.

Dante’s jaw tightened.

He walked toward me, but slower now.

When he reached my table, I stood.

He stared at me with that same cold look… but something in his eyes had changed.

A flicker of something else. Worry? Or was that just in my head?

“I’m fine,” I said quietly.

He walked away. "Good."

I hesitated. "Were you waiting for me?"

He shrugged. "I care for everybody. You're no exception."

Then he walked away.

Rina returned a minute later, panting.

"Did he bite you?!!" she exclaimed, eyes wide.

"No."

"Are you sure?! Touch your neck!!"

"I'm fine."

She inhaled and collapsed into the chair. "Girl, what is wrong with you? First, Riven is obsessed with you. Kael feels your blood moving. Dante has to split his test. And now the vampire literally traverses a room of humans and wants to go out with your blood?!"

I blinked. "It wasn't like that…"

"Same as that," she said to me, eyes open wide. "He tells you he's going to fall in love with your blood? Who does that?!"

I didn't say anything.

Because I had no idea how to explain what was going through my head.

When Lucien looked at me… something within me shattered.

Something terrible.

And beautiful.

I spent that night in bed in silence.

My heart was looping Lucien's words over and over and over again.

"It matches mine."

Was I really just an ordinary girl?

Because every day since I got into this school…

More and more pieces of me were waking up.

And I wasn't sure for how long I could pretend that I didn't feel it too.

Chapter Six: Too Much Power in One Girl Lyla The sky was gray. Wind rushed through the trees as we walked to the field. I didn’t know why my hands were shaking. Maybe because my magic had been acting strange lately. Maybe because something inside me felt like it was building… like it was waiting to explode. “Don’t be nervous,” Rina said beside me, half-smiling. “They say we won’t do anything crazy today.” “Are you sure?” “Nope,” she said. “But I’ll stand beside you in case you start glowing again.” I gave her a weak smile. The field was wide, with students standing in rows. The instructor stood in front, holding a small staff. “Today,” he said, “we practice elemental focus. Fire. Wind. Water. Control.” People around me cheered. I just stood still. They called names. One by one, students stepped forward and showed what they could do. Some lit small flames in their palms. Others made leaves dance in the wind. Then the teacher called mine. “Lyla.” I froze. “Come forwa

Chapter Four: Something Woke Up Lyla’s POV “Lyla.” Someone was shaking me. “Lyla, you’re sweating. Are you okay?” My eyes shot open. I sat up, breathing fast. My hands felt hot—burning, almost. “What the hell?” I mumbled and looked down. My fingers were glowing. Not like fire—but soft, golden light, pulsing beneath my skin. “Rina…” I whispered. She was sitting cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her tablet, one hand halfway into a cereal box. “Yeah?” “Something’s wrong with me.” “Did you start your period? There are pads in the bathroom.” “No,” I said. “My hands. They’re—” I held them up. “They were glowing.” That made her look up. “Glowing? Like glitter? Or full-on alien baby stuff?” I wiped my palms on my blanket, but the glow had already faded. “It stopped. But I felt it. Something woke up inside me.” Rina blinked once, then tossed her cereal aside and got off the bed. “Come here.” “I’m not joking.” “I know. Come here. Let me see your eyes.” She tilted my

Chapter Three: The Glance Lyla “Lyla,” a voice said sharply. “Get up. You’ve already slept through three alarms.” I groaned, half-awake. “Just… just five more minutes, Rina.” “Five minutes and you’ll miss breakfast. You want to be the girl who walks into the dining hall while everyone’s leaving?” I peeked from under my blanket. “I don’t think I care.” “Oh, you will,” she said, yanking the blanket off me. “This school doesn’t wait for feelings. And the dining hall is where all the action happens.” “Action?” I mumbled, sitting up slowly. “What kind of action?” Rina opened her closet, already dressed in ripped black jeans and a fitted jacket. “Breakfast is where you learn who’s hot, who’s cursed, who fights dirty, and which creatures hate each other this week.” “That’s… comforting,” I muttered, dragging my legs off the bed. She turned to me, one brow raised. “Also, it’s where you get your first look at Dante in the daylight. Trust me, you don’t want to miss that.” I paused. “I

Chapter Two: His Eyes Burned Me Lyla “Is… is this the school?” I leaned forward in the car, staring at the giant gates in front of me. The driver didn’t answer. The gates opened slowly. Old. Rusty. They made this long, heavy groaning sound like they hadn’t been used in years. The building behind it? Huge. Dark stone. Sharp towers reaching into the sky. Everything looked like something out of a horror movie. “Are you sure this is the right place?” I asked again. Still no answer. The car stopped. The door opened. I stepped out with my bag, soaked from head to toe. The car drove off without a word. Just like that. Gone. I turned toward the school. “Okay… you can do this.” I took a step forward. The wind blew hard. Cold. Loud. Like it was whispering my name. I pulled my hoodie tighter around my face and kept walking. Something about the air felt strange. It felt… heavy. Like the ground was watching me. I didn’t know how else to explain it. I tried t
