Chapter 11

Ellyse went to fetch Claire from her school after visiting her former home. Before leaving, she made sure she looked a 100 times better just so Claire wouldn’t notice.

Her kid is really good at sensing her mood. She’d immediately ask Ellyse if she was sad or lonely if she saw even a hint of sadness in her face.

She arrived at Claire’s school, her head throbbing quite a bit from all the stress she endured earlier.

“Mrs. Laurent!” Claire’s teacher, Ms. Adella greeted her when she stood in front of the door.

“Ms. Adella, it’s nice to see you,” They exchanged hugs before Claire came running towards her.

“Mommy!” Ellyse giggled at her daughter before holding her head. Claire had chocolate smeared all over her mouth.

“Be a good girl, ok Claire?” Ms. Adella said lively.

“Of course, Ms. Adella!” Claire said while Ellyse was busy removing the chocolate stains from her daughter’s face with a wet wipe.

“Claire what did you eat? You’re so dirty,” They started walking to her car. Claire seemed energetic, she’s in a good mood today.

“Chocolate mommy! My friend Xia gave me some, it was so good! Can we buy some?” They both entered the car. While Claire was busy telling Ellyse stories about what happened woth her day, Ellyse was putting on her seatbelt.

“Well, you can’t have too much sweets because it’s not good for kids,” She warned Claire who didn’t try protesting anymore and just pouted.

When they arrived back at the mansion, she fed Claire her lunch and bathed her. Afterwards, she put Claire to bed for her afternoon nap before leaving and going back to the office.

She’d planned to finish the floor plan as soon as possible so she could finally resign and leave his godforbidden company.

As usual, she was greeted by employees when she entered the building. By 3 pm, she was already starting the floor plan and she never stopped working until she had found herself sleeping on her desk from exhaustion.

It was already 10 pm when Kai went home to the mansion. He adjusted his tie and sat on the sofa.

“Daddy!” Claire ran towards him while holding her brown teddy bear. And just like that, Kai’s tiredness disappeared.

“My sweet girl, have you eaten?” He says, back resting on the sofa while his daughter sat on his lap, embracing him lovingly.

“Yeah…I ate alone dad, mom hasn’t been going home lately. Are you two fighting again?” Claire’s tone immediately changed from lively to sad.

Kai didn’t know what to say, so he just sighed heavily. He was thinking about how he will reveal to Claire that him and her mother are now separating.

Which leads Kai to recall what had happened earlier between them. He can still remember the pain in Ellyse’s voice as she muttered those words.

For 6 years, Kai saw how hard Ellyse tried to become the perfect wife for him. He saw her efforts but always pushed them aside because no matter how much he tried, he just can’t bring himself to love her the way she wanted to.

However, this divorce is making him feel uncomfortable. Especially with a kid, Kai sometimes feel guilty for letting things happen this way.

“Claire…me and mommy are…” He gulped harshly.

“What daddy?” Claire looked at her father with puppy eyes.

“We’re…fine, we’re good. Mommy is just really busy with work lately,” She looked away, almost as if she had thought of something but is hesitating to say it out loud.

“What are you thinking about?” Kai asks.

“Mommy has been really silent lately…can you talk to her? Please daddy?” Kai watched his daughter’s eyes for a dew minutes before checking his watch

It’s 10:14 pm.

He couldn’t say no to his daughter, that was one thing he deeply struggled with so he had no choice but to sigh heavily.

“Alright, I’ll pick her up at work,” He ends up saying.

Claire’s eyes lit up when she heard him say that, she jumped from sitting on his lap to embrace him fully. “Yay! Thankyou dad!”

Kai went back to his car and drove to Laurent Estates. He knew it was already late but based from what his secretary told him, Ellyse had been working overtime lately just to finish the new floor plan.

If Ellyse had gone home somewhere, then Kai won’t try finding her anymore.

The Laurent Estates building was quiet, only the guards were seen roaming around the lobby. They greeted Kai but he only nodded at them.

“Is Ms. Kennedy still working?” He asked one of the guards.

“Yes sir, her car is still parked,” The guard answered.

For some reason, that made Kai a little uneasy. He was expecting Ellyse to be at home ay this hour just so he wouldn’t deal with fighting.

But, he had intended to say sorry to her.

The elevator dinged and Kai walked to her office with a heavy heart. He stood in front of her door, trying to think if this was even a good idea.

For sure Ellyse was still mad at her. It was so visible.

Kai sighed heavily before knocking on her door three times. However, after a few minutes of waiting, no one responded.

His brows knitted together as he decided to open the door instead. There he was met by Ellyse sleeping on her desk with her arms closed around her.

He walked over her and saw her laying down on top of the floor plan. She was sleeping soundly, it seems like she’d been working so much to the point where she slept.

Kai wanted to nudge her to wake her up but his hands stopped midway when he noticed her right hand extended towards him.


She wasn’t wearing their ring anymore.

She’d taken them off.

His head tilted to the side, trying to ease the emotions seeping in his system. Then, he took a deep breath before taking a step back.

He watched her sleep for a few minutes, trying to think if it’s even a good idea to wake her up.

In the end, he didn’t bother. So he just asked the guards to wake her up and went home empty handed.
