Ava’s POV
I sat with Doctor Dane, the same doctor who had overseen Bryan’s treatment. Bryan had been hospitalized for weeks, and according to him, Liana—who claimed to be his friend—hadn’t visited once. I asked Doctor Dane, “Can I have the pregnancy aborted?” His expression darkened. Why would a young girl like you ruin her life like this? I could read it on his face. “How old are you?” he asked, his voice thick. “Eighteen.” He drew a long breath through his nostrils before speaking again. “I know the pregnancy is only four weeks along, but I don’t think any child deserves to be denied life. Ava, I don’t know the circumstances behind this, but believe me—this baby isn’t a mistake.” My heart sank at his words, and tears welled in my eyes. I gave a faint nod as he continued. “Where are your parents?” I glanced up at him. “They’re late,” I murmured, looking back at the ground. “I won’t perform an abortion on you. You’ll keep the baby, Ava,” he said with firm assurance. I raised my head again, and this time our eyes locked. “Doctor, I’ve made up my mind. I want to end the pregnancy. The baby I’m carrying does have a father,” I confessed, letting the tears fall. He was silent for a while, as though my words had touched him. The room stayed quiet until his phone beeped, breaking the stillness. “A minute, please,” he said, raising a finger. He checked the screen, set the phone back on the table, and continued. “Were you drugged?” His brows drew together. I shook my head. “Was it rape?” I nodded. Shame burned through me. I wanted to hide under the table between us. It was my first time meeting Doctor Dane, yet I couldn’t look him in the eye or answer confidently. I felt like a disgrace. I hoped he wouldn’t judge me. My late dad used to say our mistakes shouldn’t define us. Doctor Dane wasn’t perfect either. His voice pulled me from my spiral of justifications. “I understand you, Ava. I’ll write my number on a piece of paper for you. Go home and think about this decision carefully. It’s good you said you weren’t raped. Now, sit back and ask yourself that question—you know what I mean, Ava. You may go now.” I stood quietly, ashamed of the girl my late parents had left behind—the one they believed would make them proud even in their graves. I opened the door and walked toward Bryan’s ward, each step echoing the weight of what Doctor Dane meant. “Have you seen the doctor?” Bryan asked as I stepped in. I shook my head, hoping to shake off the mood. “He says I’ve been stressed lately and should rest more,” I lied. “I thought as much,” he replied. “Bryan, I’ll see you at school tomorrow, okay? I need to go home and rest.” We said goodbye, and I left. I caught a taxi in front of the hospital and asked the driver to drop me at the stop before mine. When I got out, I noticed a lone tree in the field by the road. I walked toward it and sat underneath, my head spinning. To be frank with you, I was never attached to you. Chris’s voice replayed in my head like a broken tape. My eyes were dry and hard—I had already cried them out. I don’t think any child deserves this, Ava… This baby isn’t a mistake. Doctor Dane’s voice pushed Chris’s away. I clutched my stomach as memories came flooding back—the birthday surprise, the sex, Alex’s interference, the sketches, the rides to school. Then another memory hit—the screensaver, the video, Liana’s words in the restroom. Something clicked. I pulled out my phone, opened the video again, and zoomed in. “Alex!” I hissed, tears rushing to my eyes as if they had been given permission to escape. The signs were there, but I was too blind to see them. I hurried home. Thankfully, Margaret wasn’t in. I dumped out my school bag, spilling everything onto the floor. I searched frantically until my eyes found it—the diamond necklace. My brows furrowed. The main diamond was shaped like the letter L. “Liana,” I muttered. It was the first letter of her name. My name is Ava. If Chris had wanted to give me a diamond necklace with my initial, it should have been A, not L. I had been a fool all along. Realizing this made me hate Chris even more. I regretted ever knowing him—he was a devil in disguise. Just when I thought I was beginning to heal, life found a new way to tear the wound open. Bryan is Steve’s friend, and Steve is also a friend of Alex. Bryan hadn’t known about my deal with Steve until after it happened. When he found out, he was furious with Steve. He approached me the next day to apologize on his friend’s behalf—and that was how we truly became friends. But Bryan and Steve still remained close. I texted Bryan on W******p. He replied immediately. “Can you help me figure out who edited the video I just sent you? Something’s weird—it looks like Kia, but I don’t think it’s her,” I wrote. “I think it’s an edited video.” “Okay. I’ll check tomorrow at school. I’ll find out from Steve’s phone. I hope he doesn’t notice.” “He won’t. Just play smart,” I assured him. “Alright.” “Thank you.” I stared again at the necklace. Realizing the truth felt like a fresh cut in my chest. A loud knock pulled me from my thoughts. I hurried to the door. “Hi, Ava,” Margaret greeted warmly. “Aunt Margaret,” I said, kissing her cheek and taking the small polythene bag she was holding. Inside were spinach and eggs for dinner. “Yes,” she said, her face tightening as if she had just remembered something. “I meant to talk to you yesterday, but I fell asleep early.” My heart raced. I hoped she hadn’t found out about my pregnancy. “About what, Aunt?” I asked, keeping my tone neutral. She stepped forward and studied me closely. “Are you okay, Ava?” she asked, making my heart pound faster. It felt like a heavy weight was pressing on my chest. My lips trembled, and I opened my mouth to speak, but a wave of nausea rose in my throat. I covered my mouth with my palm. Her eyes narrowed in suspicion. “Ava?” she said, surprise widening her gaze. The bag slipped from my hands. The nausea surged again, and this time I couldn’t hold it back.Bryan’s POVChris turned slowly, his eyes narrowing at Kia, who stood trembling behind him.For a moment, he just stared. Then, without warning, he closed the gap between them, his hand rising to her cheek—not with tenderness, but with a sudden, sharp shove.Kia hit the floor with a gasp, her books scattering across the hallway tiles. The crowd erupted in shocked murmurs, but Chris didn’t flinch. He turned his back on her like she was nothing, facing Tessa again, his voice breaking.“I love you, Tessa,” he said, chest heaving. “I only love you. No one else.”The corridor held its breath. Tessa stayed still, her lips slightly parted as though she was trying to absorb every bit of what he had said. Then—“A lie,” a voice rang out from behind the crowd.Heads turned.Ava.She stepped forward from seemingly nowhere, her phone raised high in one hand. Her expression was cold, her gaze fell on Chris like a predator that had cornered its prey.“Let’s all hear what you really are, Chris,” she
Bryan’s POV“Something tells me this is Liana at work,” she said, still staring at the message.I took the phone and stared too, as if I could find the answer to her worries just by looking at the screen. I dropped the phone on the bed when the incident that had just occurred flashed through my mind.“But Ava, what happened earlier today? Where did you go, and why were you bleeding?”Her face saddened immediately as she clenched her tummy. “I went to discuss the accommodation issue with Doctor Dane, and he blatantly refused to help me, saying it was risky on his end since he doesn’t know my parents or relatives—and that if anything happened to me in his house, it might lead to big problems he was trying to avoid for the sake of his career. When he said all this, my heart bled and my chest became heavy again. I googled some abortion pills and bought them at a pharmacy on my way home with a fake doctor’s prescription. I took them in a serene place and boarded a taxi home. I’m sorry, Bry
Bryan’s POVI couldn’t breathe as I sat frozen in the doctor’s office, the weight of the unknown crushing me. Then, after what felt like hours, the doctor finally spoke.“Your sister… she’s lost the baby,” he said carefully, pausing to let the words sink in.A heavy silence settled in the room. My heart sank for a moment, the grief for her loss hitting me like a punch. But then, the doctor continued, his tone softening. “However… She’s fine. Stable and responding to treatment,” he said with a level of certainty. “She should make a full recovery. In fact, she’ll be discharged this evening.”Relief washed over me like sunlight breaking through storm clouds. My sadness and pain rolled away as though a new page of life had been flipped over. I jumped to my feet, my knees trembling with the force of the emotion.“Can I see her?” I asked eagerly, my voice trembling with urgency. The doctor nodded. “Yes, she’s awake and alert now. But take it easy—don’t startle her.”I raced down the corrido
Ava’s POVI got up from my sleep and looked around to see if Bryan’s parents were back yet, but they weren’t. I walked into Bryan’s room, then into the bathroom, and took a shower. After drying off, I stared at my tummy in the mirror, my mind heavy as memories of Chris flashed through me: our relationship and that birthday surprise at the hotel that night. “This is the result of that night,” I murmured. I quickly shook it off and picked up my phone, dialing Dr. Dane’s number. The line clicked, and his calm voice answered. “Hello, Ava. This is Dr. Dane.”“Good morning, Doctor,” I said, trying to sound alright. “I… I wanted to discuss something with you. It’s really important to me,” I added, pausing for him to respond, but the line remained silent. I continued, “My aunt found out that I was pregnant and threw me out of the house. I’m homeless right now, and that’s why I’m calling you, Doc. I don’t know if you can help me.” I remembered how Dr. Dane used to say I could confide in him, t
Bryan’s POVFrom the mirror, I saw Ava sitting on the bed behind me while I got dressed, ready for my first date with Tessa Walker, a famous and well-known model in the modeling industry. A black jeep honked in front of my house.“That must be Tessa,” I said as we peeped through the window. Her car was fucking clean. “A car for the governor’s children,” I thought.“I’ll see you, Ava! I’ll see you when I return,” I screamed over my shoulder as I rushed toward the door, disorganized. She said something, but I didn’t hear it clearly.I hopped into the car. Ava was watching from the window; I knew she was crying, but that was something we’d deal with when I returned. I sat in the back seat with Tessa, and her driver moved the car.I suddenly started sweating. I removed my handkerchief from my trouser pocket and wiped the sweat off my face several times. Tessa’s beauty was like the glow of the sun, too perfect and spotless. I couldn’t believe I was sitting next to her and now officially he
Chris’s POVI knocked at the door before twisting the handle open. Ava sat on the chair facing Mrs. Forrest. She glanced at me, then returned her gaze to the ground. My eyes darted between the two of them; I already knew what this was about. She asked me to sit beside Ava, which I did.“Did you get Ava pregnant?” she asked bluntly. I looked briefly at Ava before answering. “No, I’ve never been involved with Ava,” I said plainly. She didn’t look up at me. Mrs. Forrest let out a sigh.“Chris has just confirmed what you said, so who is the father of your baby?” she asked, her voice soft and calm. She signaled me to excuse myself, but I stood outside the door, listening.“You can confide in me, Ava.”“I went out after school with some friends and got drugged. But I don’t want anyone to know about this,” she lied, still pleading that Mrs. Forrest keep her secret. Silence filled the room for a moment.“And you don’t want me to hand this matter over—”“No! No, I don’t want any of that,” Ava
