“Concentrate, Ava,” a voice said in my head. I took out my little diary from my bag and started a sketch of Chris—my imaginary boyfriend. Someday, we’ll stroll the streets of Elitis High holding hands, I wrote beside the sketch. Kia and her friends barged in, snatching my diary and holding it up for the class to see. Kia knew her rival, so she vowed to frustrate me and make me tired of school. But I wasn’t giving up on Chris. “Hahaha, timid girl’s in love with somebody’s guy!” Kia mocked, earning laughter from the class. Liana and Bryan weren’t in yet to defend me. They were my mouthpiece—especially Liana. She was the opposite of me, an extrovert. She had been like a sister to me since I joined Elitis High. We lived on the same street, and I visited her anytime I liked; she did the same too. My eyes swelled. Kia grabbed my black hair and dragged me to the front of the class. “Let go of me, please,” I cried, trying to pull free from her grip. She shoved me to the ground as one of her friends passed her a marker. Kia drew a skeleton and scrawled beside it: Ava, keep your small ass away. Chris doesn’t even know you exist! The class roared with laughter. The door creaked open, and Chris stormed in. His dark hair swept across his forehead, framing his well-carved brows, and his dark blue eyes were sharp and focused. At about 5’9”, with a slim, toned build and flawless skin, he drew a gasp from Kia and her friends the moment he stepped in. He stopped when his eyes found me, huddled in the corner, tears streaming down my face, hair a tangled mess. No one dared to speak. Surprise flickered in their eyes. Chris held out his hand and pulled my hair back to reveal my brown eyes. He also gave me a hand up. “Wow!” the class chorused. Kia’s brows furrowed, and she stormed out with her friends. “Are you okay?” he asked, his voice firm but calm. Chris Westbrook, for the first time since I joined Elitis High, was standing in front of me, showing care. I nodded. My mouth opened, but the words didn’t come out. Chris noticed the anxiety and smiled as he walked to his desk, and my heart softened. The side talks that echoed from the classroom played in the background of my mind like a low tape. If only Chris could read my mind, I thought. Kia and her friends returned, brushing my shoulders as they made their way to their desks and forcing me to return to mine. Liana followed shortly after. “Hi, Ava,” she said as she reached my desk. “I’ve got something to show you,” she added, taking out her phone. She played a video of a model on a runway. “She’ll be coming to Elitis High soon,” she said, but I wasn’t showing interest. “Ava, don’t you know Tessa? Tessa Walker, daughter of Helen Walker. Her father’s late, but she’s a famous figure in the modeling industry and she’ll be coming to Elitis High soon.” “To do what?” My cold voice questioned, showing I was uninterested. “To enroll, of course!” she snapped. I seemed to be the only one who didn’t know Tessa Walker. Liana didn’t just show interest in any random person—you had to be professionally grounded or have a special background. I grabbed her phone and stared. “She’s pretty,” I admired with a faint smile at the corner of my mouth. The next day, Chris asked me to be his girlfriend. I thought it was one of my sketches playing out in my head, but it wasn’t. Chris stood in front of me, asking me to be his girlfriend and confessing how he had been nursing secret feelings for me. My mouth dropped. Chris Westbrook had loved me all along but had been pretending. Oh! That was why he helped me when Kia and her friends bullied me—now I get it. Without wasting time, I blurted out, “Yes! Yes!! I’ll be your girlfriend.” That day he kissed me, and since then, I hadn’t gotten that kiss out of my head. Chris is hot! Believe me, any girl would give in to him without a second thought. But Kia messed up. She started acting proud when Chris asked her out. That got him pissed—so when she finally agreed to go on a date with him, he didn’t show up. Kia waited for hours, and the next day at school, she started making an angry face. But the rumors kept flying around that the Tessa girl was coming to Elitis High. I wasn’t even freaked out by her or whoever they said she was. I had Chris, the school’s hottest guy, and that’s all that mattered. On our first date, Chris and I made love. I thought it would be a casual date where we played, visited nice places, and came back home. But I was drunk, after all, so Chris insisted we spend the night in a hotel room. I agreed. As we got in, Chris took off his shirt to take his shower—but fuck! I saw it all. His firm masculine figure, hidden under those shirts. His six-pack abs, pink lips, and firm arms. My nipples became hard. I had already taken my shower and was lying flat on the bed, facing up. My nighties were a silk, loose top with tiny straps and shorts that stopped just below my full, round butt. I was wet and horny. A moment I had been waiting for. Chris took off his trousers and I saw it— An erect cock, sticking its head out of his boxers. My heart skipped as the burning desire to have me lingered in his eyes.Bryan’s POVChris turned slowly, his eyes narrowing at Kia, who stood trembling behind him.For a moment, he just stared. Then, without warning, he closed the gap between them, his hand rising to her cheek—not with tenderness, but with a sudden, sharp shove.Kia hit the floor with a gasp, her books scattering across the hallway tiles. The crowd erupted in shocked murmurs, but Chris didn’t flinch. He turned his back on her like she was nothing, facing Tessa again, his voice breaking.“I love you, Tessa,” he said, chest heaving. “I only love you. No one else.”The corridor held its breath. Tessa stayed still, her lips slightly parted as though she was trying to absorb every bit of what he had said. Then—“A lie,” a voice rang out from behind the crowd.Heads turned.Ava.She stepped forward from seemingly nowhere, her phone raised high in one hand. Her expression was cold, her gaze fell on Chris like a predator that had cornered its prey.“Let’s all hear what you really are, Chris,” she
Bryan’s POV“Something tells me this is Liana at work,” she said, still staring at the message.I took the phone and stared too, as if I could find the answer to her worries just by looking at the screen. I dropped the phone on the bed when the incident that had just occurred flashed through my mind.“But Ava, what happened earlier today? Where did you go, and why were you bleeding?”Her face saddened immediately as she clenched her tummy. “I went to discuss the accommodation issue with Doctor Dane, and he blatantly refused to help me, saying it was risky on his end since he doesn’t know my parents or relatives—and that if anything happened to me in his house, it might lead to big problems he was trying to avoid for the sake of his career. When he said all this, my heart bled and my chest became heavy again. I googled some abortion pills and bought them at a pharmacy on my way home with a fake doctor’s prescription. I took them in a serene place and boarded a taxi home. I’m sorry, Bry
Bryan’s POVI couldn’t breathe as I sat frozen in the doctor’s office, the weight of the unknown crushing me. Then, after what felt like hours, the doctor finally spoke.“Your sister… she’s lost the baby,” he said carefully, pausing to let the words sink in.A heavy silence settled in the room. My heart sank for a moment, the grief for her loss hitting me like a punch. But then, the doctor continued, his tone softening. “However… She’s fine. Stable and responding to treatment,” he said with a level of certainty. “She should make a full recovery. In fact, she’ll be discharged this evening.”Relief washed over me like sunlight breaking through storm clouds. My sadness and pain rolled away as though a new page of life had been flipped over. I jumped to my feet, my knees trembling with the force of the emotion.“Can I see her?” I asked eagerly, my voice trembling with urgency. The doctor nodded. “Yes, she’s awake and alert now. But take it easy—don’t startle her.”I raced down the corrido
Ava’s POVI got up from my sleep and looked around to see if Bryan’s parents were back yet, but they weren’t. I walked into Bryan’s room, then into the bathroom, and took a shower. After drying off, I stared at my tummy in the mirror, my mind heavy as memories of Chris flashed through me: our relationship and that birthday surprise at the hotel that night. “This is the result of that night,” I murmured. I quickly shook it off and picked up my phone, dialing Dr. Dane’s number. The line clicked, and his calm voice answered. “Hello, Ava. This is Dr. Dane.”“Good morning, Doctor,” I said, trying to sound alright. “I… I wanted to discuss something with you. It’s really important to me,” I added, pausing for him to respond, but the line remained silent. I continued, “My aunt found out that I was pregnant and threw me out of the house. I’m homeless right now, and that’s why I’m calling you, Doc. I don’t know if you can help me.” I remembered how Dr. Dane used to say I could confide in him, t
Bryan’s POVFrom the mirror, I saw Ava sitting on the bed behind me while I got dressed, ready for my first date with Tessa Walker, a famous and well-known model in the modeling industry. A black jeep honked in front of my house.“That must be Tessa,” I said as we peeped through the window. Her car was fucking clean. “A car for the governor’s children,” I thought.“I’ll see you, Ava! I’ll see you when I return,” I screamed over my shoulder as I rushed toward the door, disorganized. She said something, but I didn’t hear it clearly.I hopped into the car. Ava was watching from the window; I knew she was crying, but that was something we’d deal with when I returned. I sat in the back seat with Tessa, and her driver moved the car.I suddenly started sweating. I removed my handkerchief from my trouser pocket and wiped the sweat off my face several times. Tessa’s beauty was like the glow of the sun, too perfect and spotless. I couldn’t believe I was sitting next to her and now officially he
Chris’s POVI knocked at the door before twisting the handle open. Ava sat on the chair facing Mrs. Forrest. She glanced at me, then returned her gaze to the ground. My eyes darted between the two of them; I already knew what this was about. She asked me to sit beside Ava, which I did.“Did you get Ava pregnant?” she asked bluntly. I looked briefly at Ava before answering. “No, I’ve never been involved with Ava,” I said plainly. She didn’t look up at me. Mrs. Forrest let out a sigh.“Chris has just confirmed what you said, so who is the father of your baby?” she asked, her voice soft and calm. She signaled me to excuse myself, but I stood outside the door, listening.“You can confide in me, Ava.”“I went out after school with some friends and got drugged. But I don’t want anyone to know about this,” she lied, still pleading that Mrs. Forrest keep her secret. Silence filled the room for a moment.“And you don’t want me to hand this matter over—”“No! No, I don’t want any of that,” Ava
