POV: Caedric

I could not take my eyes off the little girl sitting on the couch, and every single time she blinked or smiled, it felt like I was looking into a mirror from my own childhood.

"Vaela, look at me," I said, stepping closer to the desk while my heart hammered against my ribs, "look at her face and tell me the truth right now."

Vaela moved faster than I expected, stepping directly into my line of sight to block the girl from my view, and her voice was completely devoid of any emotion.

"Her name is Nyra, and she is my daughter, which means her presence here has nothing to do with you or this business contract," Vaela said, grabbing the little girl’s jacket from the back of the chair, "we are done with the security briefing for today, so we will be leaving."

"You are not going anywhere until you answer me," I said, reaching out to touch her arm, but she flinched away before my fingers could even graze her sleeve.

"Do not touch me, Alpha Caedric," she snapped, her eyes flashing with a cold warning that made my chest ache, "you hired my company to protect your border and investigate a murder, not to interrogate my child."

She scooped Nyra up into her arms, and before I could say another word, she walked straight out of the boardroom and headed down the long hallway toward the private exit. I did not care that my guards were watching or that my council members were staring through the glass windows, because I followed her right out into the corridor, keeping my pace fast enough to match her hurried steps.

"Vaela, stop walking and talk to me," I called out, closing the distance between us until I was standing right beside her near the elevator doors.

"I have nothing to say to you," she said, keeping her face turned away while she pressed the button for the ground floor, "my life outside of Voss Dominion is private, and I suggest you respect that boundary if you want my team to stay."

"I do not give a damn about the security contract right now," I said, standing directly in front of her so she could not step into the elevator when the doors slid open, "look at her dimples, Vaela, look at the shape of her eyes and the color of her hair and tell me who her father is."

Vaela let out a harsh, bitter laugh, but she held the little girl tighter against her chest, and her posture remained completely rigid.

"Her father is not part of this equation," Vaela said, her voice dropping into a sharp whisper so the girl would not hear the anger behind her words, "he is a man from my past who does not exist in our lives anymore, and he never will."

"You lied to me for seven years," I said, feeling the anger and grief mixing together until I could barely breathe properly, "you let me believe you died in that ravine, you let me live through hell thinking I lost you forever, and now you walk back in here with a child who looks just like me and tell me her father does not matter?"

"You lost the right to ask about my life the night you let your family put me in chains," she said, her eyes burning with a deep, silent rage that hit me harder than any physical strike, "my daughter's father has no place in our lives, he never fought for us then, and he certainly does not get to ask questions now."

I took a step closer, ready to beg her to just give me a straight answer, but before the words could leave my mouth, the little girl shifted in Vaela's arms. Nyra leaned her head over her mother's shoulder, tilting her face to look directly at me, and the innocence in her gaze completely froze me in my tracks.

"Mommy, why are you yelling at the nice man?" Nyra asked, her small voice echoing softly in the quiet hallway while she pointed one tiny finger toward my face.

Vaela softened her tone instantly, adjusting the girl on her hip while trying to turn her body away from me.

"I am not yelling, sweetheart," Vaela murmured, her voice shaking just a little bit despite her best efforts to stay composed, "we are just talking about work, but we need to go to the car now because Maya is waiting for us."

"But Mommy, look at him," Nyra insisted, reaching out with her little hand toward my face while her small brow furrowed in confusion, "why do his eyes look exactly like mine?"

The entire hallway went dead silent, and my breath caught right in my throat as I looked from the child's glowing golden eyes straight into Vaela's terrified, pale face.

POV: CaedricI stood in the center of the sitting room for a long time after the heavy door clicked shut behind Maya and Nyra, my hands hanging at my sides while the lingering sound of Vaela’s shouting echoed in the corners of the space."She is not leaving the palace today, Jaxon," I said, my voice sounding flat as I stared at the spot where Vaela had been standing, "and I do not want any of the guards interfering with her movements unless it is a direct security threat.""She is already loading the vehicles in the rear bay, Caedric," Jaxon said, stepping into the room with his hands tucked behind his back, "and she is not going to listen to your orders about staying put.""I am not giving an order to keep her here," I said, walking toward the window to watch the black cars idling on the gravel, "I am giving you an order to make sure she stays safe while she is on these grounds, because if another transport incident happens on my watch, I will burn this palace down to the foundat

POV: CaedricI stood near the large window in my private office, staring down at the white paper in my hand while Jaxon sat on the chair near the door, watching me in complete silence."The test came back as a ninety-nine point nine percent match," Jaxon said softly, breaking the quiet in the room, "the chief medical officer personally processed the sample to ensure absolute accuracy.""Seven years, Jaxon," I said, my voice cracking as I stared at the dark ink print on the bottom of the page, "she spent seven years growing up in another territory without me knowing her name, without me holding her when she was a baby, and without me seeing her take her very first steps.""You did not know, Caedric," Jaxon said, standing up and stepping over to place his hand on my shoulder, "you were searching for Vaela the entire time, and you had no idea she was pregnant when she disappeared from the east wing.""That does not fix anything," I said, folding the white paper and shoving it into m

  • Framed: The Alpha's Broken Vow   Don't Call Him That

POV: VaelaMy heart dropped straight into my stomach the second that single word left Nyra's lips, and I scrambled off the mattress, my hands shaking uncontrollably as I tried to pull my daughter out of Caedric's arms."Give her back to me, Caedric," I said, my voice cracking with panic while I grabbed Nyra under her arms and lifted her onto my lap, "she is half-asleep and she does not know what she is saying right now."Caedric did not pull back immediately, his hands lingering on Nyra's back for three agonizing seconds while his golden eyes locked onto my face with an intensity that made it almost impossible for me to breathe, but he slowly stood up from his kneeling position on the floor."She knew exactly who she was talking to, Vaela," Caedric said softly, his voice low and raspy as he stared down at the two of us, "you can keep trying to lie to me, but you cannot change what she feels in her own blood.""I am not lying about anything, so please walk out of this bedroom righ

  • Framed: The Alpha's Broken Vow   The Nightmare

POV: VaelaI carried Nyra back into the inner bedroom of the guest suite, shutting the double doors firmly behind us so Isolde and the guards would remain outside in the sitting area, and I sat on the edge of the mattress while holding my daughter tightly against my chest."You are safe now, Nyra, nobody in this palace is going to touch you or hurt you," I said softly, smoothing her dark hair down while her tiny hands slowly loosened their grip on my collar, "I am right here with you, and Maya is standing right at the door.""I do not like that woman, Mommy," Nyra sobbed, hiding her face in the crook of my neck while her small body shook with quiet tremors, "she smells like those bad papers you keep in your locked bag, and her voice sounded like the person in my bad dreams.""She is leaving now, sweetheart, so you do not have to look at her anymore," I said, laying her gently on the pillows and pulling the light blanket over her shoulders, "just close your eyes and focus on my voi

  • Framed: The Alpha's Broken Vow   Isolde's Smile

POV: VaelaI stood near the glass doors of the entrance hall, keeping my hands resting naturally at my sides while I stared directly at Isolde, refusing to let her see a single drop of surprise on my face."My name is Vaela Voss, and you must be confusing me with someone else," I said, my voice completely steady while two palace guards walked past us toward the courtyard, "I am here as the head of Voss Dominion for the security dinner with the Queen.""Of course, my apologies, Miss Voss," Isolde said, her smile widening as she smoothed down her dress, but her sharp eyes scanned my face from top to bottom with calculated precision, "it is just that you look remarkably like a girl who used to live here years ago, though I suppose anyone can look familiar in this lighting.""I am sure many people pass through this palace, Lady Isolde," I said, stepping past her onto the runner that led into the main dining room, "so you should probably focus on your own seat before the dinner starts.

  • Framed: The Alpha's Broken Vow   The Royal Invitation

POV: VaelaI sat at the table in the safehouse kitchen, staring at the formal letter resting beside my coffee cup, while Maya stood near the stove checking the security monitors on her tablet."Are you really going to ignore an invitation signed by Queen Evelyne herself?" Maya asked, turning around to look at me while she wiped her hands on a towel, "you know how she gets when people do not show up to her dinners.""I do not care about her feelings or her dinner parties, Maya," I said, sliding the letter away from me without opening it again, "she called me to the palace because she wants to inspect my security company, and she wants to look into my face to see if I am going to cause trouble for her council.""She also asked you to bring Nyra," Maya pointed out, stepping closer to the table and leaning against the chair, "which means someone inside the court has already told her about the girl.""Nobody is taking my daughter anywhere near that palace," I said, my voice rising as
