Chapter 1

"Isabelle! Why did you cheat off Marianne's paper? You've even copied her essay word for word! You're the top student in the entire grade!" Mr. Alan Smith, my homeroom teacher, shouted furiously.

I looked up and met his gaze, which was filled with anger and disappointment.

I then turned around blankly to look at my surroundings, only to see Marianne Quentin glaring at me seethingly.

She smirked before shrieking, "You're so shameless, Isabelle. You're even copying my essay now!"

My body trembled as if I'd been hit by a bolt of lightning. Only then did I realize that I'd been reborn—and I'd returned to the moment Marianne first accused me of cheating off her.

In my past life, the school held its final mock exam a week before the SAT exam.

Just as the writing exam was about to end, Marianne, who was sitting beside me, suddenly raised her hand and shouted, "Isabelle copied my paper, Mr. Smith!"

Mr. Smith was utterly stunned.

I found it completely absurd. How could I—someone who'd held the top rank in our grade all year round—possibly copy her paper?

Marianne stared at me with an unwavering gaze. Her tone was challenging as she said, "Just compare our papers if you don't believe me, Mr. Smith."

I was the first to hand my paper over to Mr. Smith.

Marianne was the childhood friend of my boyfriend, Lance Russell. Ever since I started dating him, she'd been finding fault with me at every turn.

I figured this was just another petty trick Marianne came up with to target me. Having gotten used to it, I didn't take it to heart.

However, Mr. Smith stared at me in shock after checking the papers. "What are you doing, Isabelle? Why did you copy Marianne's answers?"

My mind went blank as I was left completely stunned. How could I have possibly cheated off Marianne?

She tilted her chin, looking smug. "Don't bother denying it, Isabelle. Just see it for yourself. How shameless of you to even copy my essay!"

I took the papers from Mr. Smith. It was just like what Marianne said—even our essays were identical.

I was utterly bewildered. How could this be possible? I'd clearly answered the paper on my own.

I tried my best to defend myself, yet no one believed in me. After all, both our papers were indeed identical.

Mr. Smith assumed that I was simply under too much pressure over the upcoming exam. He offered me a few words of comfort and warned me not to repeat my mistake again.

Marianne raised her hand again during the math exam in the afternoon. "Isabelle is just too shameless, Mr. Smith. She's cheating off me again!"

After checking, Mr. Smith realized that our answers were identical once more. His face darkened immediately as he scolded me for not learning my lesson and sent me home to reflect.

I racked my brain during the days I stayed at home. But no matter what, I still couldn't come up with an explanation.

I couldn't understand how my answers for both the writing and math papers had turned out identical to Marianne's, down to the essay, even though I hadn't cheated.

When I finally stepped into the exam hall for the SAT exam, I pushed aside all distractions and focused on answering the papers.

There was no way the same thing could possibly happen again with how strict the SAT was.

I felt confident after I finished the writing paper. Yet just as the bell rang signaling the end of the exam, Marianne, who was sitting on my left, raised her hand.

She said, "I want to report the student next to me, sir. She's been cheating off me!"

Two exam supervisors immediately came over to check. Once more, the answers on both our papers were identical.

The punishment came quickly—I would be banned from taking any SAT exams for the next two years.

I came from a poor family, and the SAT exam was my only chance to change my fate. Losing this opportunity meant that I no longer had a future.

In despair, I leaped from the rooftop.

To my surprise, fate presented me with another chance.

This time, I would rewrite my ending.

Lance immediately collapsed in front of me upon hearing my words. "You have to believe in me, Belle. This has nothing to do with me. I had no idea that wretched Marianne would do something like this to you!""If I'd known that she was behind everything all along, I wouldn't have broken up with you. Please forgive me, Belle. Let's start over and apply to the same college together."I coldly brushed away Lance's outstretched hand, disgusted. "Do you really think you can get into the same college as me with your grades? Dream on! Don't think I don't know how those two buttons ended up on my school uniform!"As soon as I finished speaking, Marianne, who was slumped on the floor, got up suddenly and slapped him across the face. "Now that everything has been exposed, you're pushing all the blame onto me? You're the one who came up with this idea in the first place!"Lance kicked her down. "Nonsense! When did I ever say that? You're the one who told me to sew the buttons on her school u

Everyone turned their attention to me once again."What evidence do you have, Isabelle?" Mr. Smith anxiously asked.Marianne shot a vicious look at me. "What tricks are you trying to pull again, Isabelle? You've already called for the doctors and checked the surveillance footage. What more do you want?""I haven't even gotten started yet, Marianne. Are you feeling guilty now?" I asked.Lance stepped out as soon as I finished speaking. "Stop making a fuss, Isabelle. You're already blind—what does that have to do with Marie? I think you're just deliberately trying to waste everyone's time. Don't forget we still have another exam in the afternoon!"I smiled and nodded. "That's right, we still have an exam in the afternoon. I won't waste everyone's time then."I then looked down and removed the third button from my school uniform. Handing it over to Mr. Greene, I said, "This is the evidence of Marianne cheating, Mr. Greene."Marianne's face turned pale that very moment."This is…"

The surveillance footage was soon pulled up.On the big screen, everyone could see that my gaze was focused entirely on my paper from the moment I sat down. Even when I occasionally looked up, it was only to turn my neck slightly.I never once looked in Marianne's direction. On the other hand, she kept sneaking glances at me from time to time.Everyone had an idea of what was going on after watching the surveillance footage. There was no way I could have copied from her paper."It turns out that Isabelle never once looked that way. How could she have possibly cheated then?""It doesn't matter whether she looked that way or not. Isabelle can no longer see now—even if she had looked that way, she wouldn't have been able to see anything!""That's right! The doctor said that her world is nothing but darkness. How unfortunate!"Marianne's hands trembled anxiously, yet she forced herself to keep calm when the crowd turned to her.She said, "I might have been mistaken about this, Mr.

Soon enough, two doctors came in carrying their medical kits."Doctors, please examine her eyes and see if she's really blind," Mr. Greene said. The doctors nodded before taking out a small flashlight from the medical kit. After more than 10 minutes, they were finally done with the examination. One of the doctors turned to face the crowd. With a sigh, he said regrettably, "Her vision is extremely poor, with low visibility that is akin to blindness."Everyone was shocked to hear that. They all turned to look at me.Marianne's shrill voice rang out. "How is that possible? How could she be blind? Just a few days ago she could still see!"Mr. Greene was equally perplexed. "That's right—her vision was completely fine a few days ago. What exactly happened to you in the past few days, Isabelle?"I smiled and remained silent. The doctor replied on my behalf, "Her eyes must have developed serious problems some time ago, but they were never treated in time. My guess is that she only wen

Watching the stunned expressions around me, I took the thick-framed glasses off. As soon as they were off, everyone could see my strange, misshapen eyeballs.Marianne recoiled at the sight, stumbling back in shock. She lost her balance and almost slipped."You… y-you…" she stuttered, pointing at me, yet she couldn't form a complete sentence.Everyone around us gasped in shock."Isabelle is blind?""How is that possible? Since when was she blind?""She was just fine a while back."Marianne finally steadied herself after a while. Shaking her head in disbelief, she muttered, "That's impossible… How did Isabelle become blind all of a sudden? She was just fine a few days ago."She yelled, "What kind of stunt are you trying to pull now, Isabelle?"She walked over and waved a hand right in front of me. Seeing that I wasn't reacting, she snatched the medical diagnosis from my hands. She gave it a quick glance before throwing it to the floor, stomping right over it. She then spat, "Wh

Beside me, Marianne continued to fan the flames. "Isabelle has always been the top student in our school, but I've long suspected that her grades weren't real. She copied my answers during the mock exam, and I can't believe she still hasn't learned her lesson."It seems like she got all her past grades thanks to cheating. It's one thing to cheat during school exams, but she's even doing it during the SAT exam! Someone like her should be dealt with seriously, Mr. Smith. We should make an example out of her for everyone else!"My classmates erupted in indignation and started pointing fingers at me."That's right! Isabelle is mocking the fairness of exams. She has to be dealt with seriously!""Someone as dishonest as her shouldn't even be allowed to take the SAT exam!"Soon, our headmaster, Mr. Geoffrey Greene, hurried over after hearing about the commotion. His expression darkened when he learned of what had happened. He said harshly, "I can't believe you did something like this w
