View MoreI sighed and ran my hand through my hair for the umpteenth time, tapping my foot on the ground as my nerves consumed me. It was my third dating anniversary with Alpha James. I had heard through my step sister, Valeria, that he was planning on proposing tonight. Valeria had always been against me but when she told me that James had set up something special just for me, I was thankful.
Even when James called to tell me to delay coming home for another two hours, it only cemented what I felt in my heart. I was going to get engaged to the Alpha of the BloodFang Pack. Me. A wolfless hybrid was going to be his Luna. So here I was, fidgeting with my appearance at the door of the home I shared with James, prepping myself on how to act when he popped the big question. I checked my phone and smiled when the time for me to be out elapsed. With a deep breath, I opened the door and walked in, ready for what laid ahead. "James?" I called out but he didn’t answer me. The room was dark so I turned on the lights. My eyes widened when I saw the room. Rose petals littered the floor and red heart balloons filled the space. I giggled, getting giddy from the excitement of it all. I looked around, and on seeing a little red box on the counter I knew that James was really going to propose. I took a step towards it when I heard a shuffle in the room. I paused and turned towards the noise, thinking that James was still trying to set up. I grinned and walked to the room, ready to surprise him but in the end I was the one who was surprised. As soon as I walked into the room, I found James on top of someone, his body moving rhythmically as he grunted and groaned, whispering words I'd never heard him say to me. His satisfied moans reached my ears and I felt bile rise in my throat. “Fuck! You are so much better than her!” James moaned into the woman’s neck as I gaped at the sight. “Yes, Alpha James. Fuck me!” She responded, her blood red nails digging into his back. A pit formed in my stomach and I fought the urge to gag. “James,” I managed to blurt out after watching them go at it for another minute. James stopped moving and turned. His eyes widened when they landed on me, standing there. My lip quivered and my heart sank. James pulled away from the person beneath him, grabbed a sheet to cover himself, and turned to face me. He put his hands up in a pleading manner. "Andrea, it's not what you think it is," he said, watching me like a deer caught in headlights. My heart shattered into a million pieces at the sight of the man I loved trying to gaslight me about what I had seen with my own eyes. But then the woman beneath the sheets sat up, her strawberry-blonde hair cascading over her bare shoulders and a satisfied smirk on her face that I knew all too well. "Seriously, James? You're going to try that line?" She laughed, and my blood ran cold. "Valeria?" I whispered, my voice breaking at the betrayal. I knew Valeria didn’t like me but to do this? This was going too far. The beloved child of my step-mother, the one with the perfect wolf who never allowed me to forget that I was wolfless, sat there and watched me crack with a cruel smirk on her face. Of everyone in the pack, it just had to be her. "Hello, sister," she purred, making no move to cover herself. "Surprise." "What is this, James?" I screamed at him, my heart beating like it was about to explode in my chest. "My step-sister?" James gulped and stared at me like he didn't know what to say. While I stood there with my emotions bleeding out. Valeria finally pulled the sheet around herself and sat up fully, her wolf's presence radiating smugly even in human form. "Oh, don't be so dramatic, Andrea," Valeria said, rolling her eyes. "Did you really think an Alpha would stay tied to a wolfless nobody forever? Our father might have facilitated this union but please tell me that you weren’t dumb enough to think that it would work were you?" I felt like I'd been slapped as she chuckled. “Wolfless nobody? I’m his mate.” I shot back, my hands balling into fists. “Mate? Don’t make me laugh. James told me that you two never bonded. It’s such a shame since you’re a worthless hybrid. Not quite wolf. Not quite human. You’re an abomination.” She taunted, twirling a strand of her hair. Normally, I would shrink away but not this time. I had had enough. “You did all this just because you couldn’t stand me having something better than you didn’t you? You had the house and the name but because no wolf came for your hand, you thought it best to steal mine.” “Watch your words or I will cut out your tongue you bitch!” Valeria sneered, her eyes glowing golden as her claws threatened to come out. I knew I couldn’t fight back but I steeled my nerves, not showing any weakness. “That’s enough, Valeria!” James ordered before turning to me. I eyed him, my blood beginning to boil at the sight of his angered face. “You lied to me. How could you do this?” I questioned, still hoping against hope that he still cared about me but every hope I had shattered when he spoke. "I wanted a real mate. Someone whose wolf could run with mine. Someone who could give me strong wolf pups, not... whatever hybrid offspring you'd produce. If you could even conceive at all." “But we decided that we would try for…” "I don’t care what you think we decided to do.” He lashed out, making me see the monster that laid beneath his facade for years. "I've been careful to make sure you didn’t get pregnant. Did you really think I'd risk having defective pups with an abomination like you?" The room spun as I realized what he said and rage welled up inside me. “I will let the council and pack know what you have done here today. They will all find out how you went against your vows for someone like her.” “Go ahead. Who wouldn’t be glad that the Alpha moved on from something like you?” Valeria poked, grinning my way. “Oh, they’ll care. Even if I don’t have a wolf, an Alpha breaking his vow with infidelity is enough to demote him.” I explained before setting my eyes on James. “It’s enough to ruin you.” “You will do no such thing.” James warned, taking a step closer. I squared my shoulders, ready to bite back when strong hands wrapped around my arms, locking me in place and lifting me off the ground. I glanced around to see Beta’s who served James and I, gripping me in place. “What is this? Let me go!” “Oh they will. Just not inside the house.” James said, closing the distance between us until we were face to face. He grabbed my chin and held tightly, making me wince. “If you let this slip to anyone in the pack, I will kill you and everyone you love which may not be much, but would you really want to see Clover’s head on a spike by the pack line?” He threatened me. On hearing my best friend's name, I gulped and caved. I didn’t have a wolf so I couldn’t protect her. James let go of me and I bent my head, feeling tears prick at my eyes at my helplessness. “Throw her out. Don’t ever let her back in.” He commanded. In one swift move, I was turned around, taken out of my own home and thrown into the streets, my knees scraping as they collided with the cold asphalt, drawing blood. I heaved as I cried for what seemed like an eternity, wondering why the Moon Goddess decided to curse me in such a manner but once I calmed down, I gained a sense of calm. I pushed myself to my feet and got into my car, slowly wiping the tears from my eyes. Three years of my life. Gone. Destroyed. For what? Because I was born without a wolf? Because I wasn't good enough, strong enough, wolf enough? I slammed my hands repeatedly on the steering wheel, trying to beat out my frustration, my pain, my rage. This was all my fault. How had I been that stupid? How had I missed all the signs? ‘An abomination’, Valeria’s words echoed in my mind. I shook my head. No. There was no way that I was going to allow that bitch and James define who I was. I needed to clear my head. I needed to forget what just happened, even if it was just for a few hours. I needed to feel something other than this crushing weight of despair. For once in my pathetic, wolfless life, I was going to do something for myself.AndreaClover’s scent disappeared with the wind and I slowly drifted back into my ocean of thoughts, letting the waves drown me until I couldn’t breathe anymore. She made it clear that she’d find a new home for me…a place more suitable than here. But that was exactly what she said to me when she convinced me to come here. I wanted to believe that she had a better place in mind for me, but most of me already knew that she didn’t. A knock on my door jerked me back to the present and I slowly sat up on the bed, pressing down on my temple like it would reduce the throbbing sensation inside there. “Come in..” my voice echoed barely above a whisper. The hinges creaked and the door pushed open, Don walked in and shut the door behind him. He walked over to my bed and stood at a distance, coughing softly into his fist. “I see you’re recuperating really fast.” He started, scanning me thoroughly. “I’m trying..” I replied dryly, trying as much as I could to not meet his eyes. “I just need s
“Oh my goddess, Andrea are you okay?” Clover asked, her voice so high it made the unbearable headache I was having more unbearable. Instinctively, I reached for my head, my face scrunched up in pain. “Sorry.” She frowned, handing me a cup of water which I gulped down immediately. “Are you okay?” She asked again.I took a deep breath, wondering if I was truly okay as memories of everything I’d been through within the last few hours came rushing back.I blinked back the tears as I remembered how mean the men were to me for absolutely no reason. Because I was wolfless? It made no sense.“I’m not okay,” I finally managed to say. Just as Clover was about to offer me a bit of comfort, the door flung open and both our heads cocked towards it. A young maid walked in with a plate of hot porridge, the smell wafting through the air and my stomach growling in response. She set it down on the table beside me, her face filled with visible disgust. “Master Don told me to bring this to you…” She
Andrea My life had just gone from a decent and comfortable one to something I can’t even understand anymore. Don would never look at me the same way anymore. The good reputation I had built here quickly crashed right before my eyes. Everyone would soon start to avoid me like I was some deadly plague. And to top it all, Don no longer has any use of me at the counter, I didn’t even know what to expect from working behind with the wine makers. The music went on outside, but I could feel the shift in the atmosphere. I heard their mumblings from inside here and even though their words were inaudible, I could tell they were speaking of me. I lay on the old bed, pulling the sheets over my face like it would block out the gut wrenching feeling in my chest. But of course I was only wasting my time. The voices slowly became distant as people dispersed. I heard shuffling outside my door as the other workers went back and forth. “I can’t believe she fooled everyone..” I heard s
Andrea My heart froze, and in that moment it felt like time had stood still and we were the only people in the room. I felt my body quiver as I watched the smile on her face grow wider. Why always me? Why was I never allowed even the slightest bit of happiness? “What sister? Aren’t you happy to see me?” She smiled, her voice laced with mischief. I swallowed hard, looking around to see if anyone was perhaps listening to us but the sound of the loud music and their happy chattering confirmed that it was impossible. “What are you doing here?” I managed to ask, my voice breathless and she let out a hysterical laughter. “What am I doing here? Oh honey I believe that’s a question for you.” She replied, her voice firm and eyes radiating with all the hatred she had for me. She quickly walked past me, gliding through the crowd while I watched quietly, unable to move or even say a word. Why did she have to come here? It could have been any other bar, any other tavern, why here? Did so
AndreaThe morning sun kissed my face warmly and my weary eyes fluttered open. I stirred on the old bed, stretching my arms above my head. Footsteps shuffled outside briskly, like everyone was hurrying somewhere. Children wailed, mothers whined and nagged. I sat up on the bed, my fingers digging
Andrea“Clover?” The old man continued, leading us into another room. The smell of burning incense and raw gin pierced through the air, making my nose scrunch up. I pushed the old dusty curtain aside before leaning into the room. “You know if she has to stay here, I need to at least know what it
AndreaI trudged behind Clover as she led us through the forest like it wasn’t her first time.I was in awe but resisted from asking her any questions. I could imagine how she was feeling, having to take her best and only friend to a different pack and then being left alone all because of a cooked
