Chapter 17— Darkness By Choice

"What was that all about?" Ciara asked, her gaze questioning

"What was what?" I said in the most vague way possible.

"That attitude you gave out there?" She said, pointing at the door "Even at the gown shop, what was all that about."

"Look, Ciara, I don't know what you are talking about right now; I need to rest now."

"He's just trying to be nice, you know, act his part as a husband."

"I am glad, you said that Ciara, ACT, so you see this is all an act," I said collapsing on the couch "I don't have to pretend that I like him, or pretend that we are marrying each other for real,"

"Really? Ciara? You think this is all just a contract marriage to him?"

I brought out the contract details and flung it in her direction. "Here, take a look, Ciara. Can you see all the conditions in it? It's a contract marriage, and it's just going to be for five years." I paused, and heaved a deep sigh "At least that will be enough for me to carry out my revenge on the Lorenzos"

Without looking at it, Ciara said, "Hey, you requested this contract; it wasn't him."

"But he signed it didn't he?" I asked harshly

"Would you have agreed to Marry him if he hadn't signed?"

She was right, if he hadn't signed it, I wouldn't have agreed to marry him. I just couldn't bring myself to trust a Lorenzo anymore, not after what I had gone through in the hands of Marcel, not after the humiliation I experienced at a Gramps birthday party.

"Ciara, please,-"

"Diana, I know when a man is in love"

"Wouldn't you have said the same thing when you first saw Marcel?"

"That's the difference, babe; I didn't say anything about it."

"So what? You are a good judge of character now? If you are, why didn't you warn me about Marcel? At least you saw him almost every single time in our seven years." My voice began to break.

I thought I had moved on from the heartbreak, but I hadn't, coupled with the going back to an orphan thing, and the family's humiliation.

I guess everything just came weighing down on me at that very minute.

"I... I... I thought you were happy, Diana. You always came back from every date and every visit smiling, and then you moved in with him; I never heard you complain about him once..."

"It's fine; what's the essence of crying over spilt milk? It's been spilt already."

She was right; I never came to Ciara with complaints any day, even when I noticed a few things, but I overlooked them, thinking that I was probably being paranoid about little things.

There were certain times he would show up at the house wearing a woman's scent, or should I say a woman's scent had taken over his scent, but I always assumed that it was because of the business.

He had to see a lot of people, and most of them, especially ladies, would need a hug instead of a handshake.

Even when I kept on getting this particular scent from him, not changing, I still had excuses for him; he probably had multiple business deals with this person.

It never occurred to me that he could be cheating on me.

Crazy right?

But that's not even the craziest thing.

The first time I was introduced to Sabrina. No, let me rephrase that; the first time Sabrina was introduced to me as the biological daughter of my adopted parents, I perceived that same scent.

But do you know what my excuse was?

I am sure you could guess it.

I concluded that only the Lorenzos had the right to own a particular scent, strictly belonging to them only. No one else in the world uses it.

They could achieve this easily because one of their thriving companies was their cologne and deodorants company.

Stupid right?

At least now I know better. No longer in the dark.

Honestly, I chose to be in that darkness and all for whatever reason because I chose to love someone wholeheartedly. Because I chose to do right by my seven years relationship? I needed things to work between us because I fantasised about being happily married with my twin babies in our arms.

Was that so much to wish for?

Going through all that, trusting Raphael was something I didn't want to do; I couldn't afford to fall into the wrong hands, at least not without gaining anything from it.

I never gained anything from Marcel; I barely even asked him for monetary things, and he barely even got me gifts.

I guess I should have suspected then, but I was too blindly in love with a cheat.

If I am going to marry the eldest son of the richest man In the whole of New York City, at least I should gain something from it.

Call me a gold digger if you want but I don't care.

That's what I am going to do whether anyone likes it or not.

Though deep down there was something weird, something seemed to want to erupt but I wouldn't let it.

I was done being the good girl everyone wanted. Besides, if I wanted my revenge plans to be successful, I needed to change who I was; like they say, the only constant thing is change.

So, I would change into something that would be greatly feared. I needed to If I wanted to get the truth about Why Raphael is being treated like an outcast In his own home.

Though you wouldn't guess because he's always reserved and composed, besides, he is stinkingly rich now.

Why he wanted to marry me, I wasn't quite sure, but whatever the reason, I didn't want to know anymore.

"Hey Diana are you even listening to me?" Ciara's voice came pulling me back into reality.

I jolted back, my tongue clicking the roof of my mouth. "I am sorry, I just zoned out for a bit." I said.

"Zone out for a bit, Diana? I guess you are really tired if you call thirty minutes a little time to zone out, Diana; I had been talking to you all those minutes, and you weren't paying attention to anything I said."

"I am sorry, Ciara; what were you saying."

She scoffed "I can't believe you right now Diana, I certainly cannot deal with this attitude right now too, so I will advise we retire for the day, you are exhausted from the day shopping" Ciara's voice laced with anger, as she turned to leave "goodnight" her tone, cold.

I watched her go into her room, slamming the door.

What did I just do?

Diana’s POV Moving closer to me, she asked, "Why didn't you tell me he was here?" her voice a whisper."I tried to but you weren't getting it."She turned and greeted him respectfully. "I am Ciara Bennett." "Well, I am Sebastian Hayes."Ciara's jaw dropped in amazement.Sebastian smiled."Tell me you are joking""No, I am not joking; I am Sebastian Hayes, son of the mayor of this great city.""Oh my gosh, I have heard so much about you." She lied Ciara had this funny attitude of pretending to have heard about someone she's just meeting for the first time, but it's nothing serious; it's just one of her old daddy jokes."Really?""Oh no, I am just playing with you" She laughed happily."Oh my, you almost got me, dear Ms Bennett.""It's Ciara, please." She corrected."Okay... noted Ciara." He smiled. She turned to face me."How's he doing? He is going to be fine soon.""We don't know yet; Shania went in with the doctor as he insisted he had to see a family member, and no one else was

  • From Ex to In-law   Chapter 27— Unexpected Devotion

Diana’s POV "I am sorry I am late, If I had been here earlier all this wouldn't have happened""It's fine, what matters is that you are here now.""I am surprised you've still got those moves," Shania said punching him lightly."Oh those moves, they come in handy when I need them."They kept on discussing forgetting that I was in their midst. I wasn't angry because I understood that it had probably been a while since they had seen each other. Plus, it also felt good to see Raphael smile genuinely.I was about to move away when I felt his hands on me, griping them tightly a little bit, then reducing their grip. I understood what it meant.I smiled. He needed me there with him. Shortly after a loud screeching sound came from the microphone on the podium.Mr Lorenzo Junior was on the podium and was going to address everyone."I am sorry for what you all had to experience here right now; please, it's with deep and great sadness that I bring to you the news that this introduction party h

  • From Ex to In-law   Chapter 26— The Mysterious Stranger

Diana’s POV What just happened? I felt Raphael heave a sigh of relief. It seemed like he knew what just happened. Slowly, he released his grip on me, pulled me away slightly, and then placed a kiss on my forehead. My heart raced. Why would he do such a thing to me? Without warning.I blushed. He turned to look in the direction where Marcel was standing, but he was no longer standing; instead, he was on the floor panting heavily.I saw a strange person standing beside him. I had never seen this person before; he didn't look like the Lorenzos either, but he had a charisma like theirs, and he wore a perfumed that I recognised. It was one of the unique scents that Lorenzo always produced. I remembered one of my discussions with Gramps years back, that was during my first year in my relationship with Marcel. Marcel had gone to attend to something, so I was left with Gramps in their home for a while. I would have gone home, but Marcel had insisted that I stay and get familiar with Gramp

  • From Ex to In-law   Chapter 25— Shattered chandeliers

Diana’s POV Behind him were Marco, Anna and a few other people I didn't recognise, they were probably friends of Marco or Marcel who also didn't want my engagement with Raphael. They didn't look like family members; you would know a Lorenzo when you saw one; they had a different charisma, and the way they carried themselves was different. Not like I am being biased, but the truth is they walk and talk like they own the world. Well, you wouldn't blame them. That's what comes with being the most prestigious family in New York City.Even Marcel had this trait, but he was more subtle than the others. The others were outright rude; I didn't notice this about Marcel when we were dating, maybe because I was blindly in love, so I was overlooking most of his excesses, but now that I was free from the shackles of a stupid love, I could see him for who he is.Looking at him standing over there with those people behind him, panting heavily. It made me wonder what I saw in him that even made me

  • From Ex to In-law   Chapter 24— Bitter Introduction

Diana's POVI turned my face away from him and looked towards the direction of Raphael. He had a big, wide, happy smile on his face. Seeing him smile at me that way was making me feel strange. What's this feeling? As I went down the stairs, I saw him walk down to the base of the stairs with his right hand outstretched. "Please allow me." I stretched forward my left arm to him, he held it and helped me down the stairs."You look ravishing," he said, staring widely into my eyes. His eyeballs were big and intoxicating. I blushed."Thank you."Everyone's eyes were fixed on me; I wasn't sure if it was the dress, my face, my heels or the fact that I was going to get married to Raphael. But whichever the case is, I wasn't going to be bothered about it.Ciara followed quietly behind us. There was soft music playing in the background. People were drinking their wine and toasting to whatever it was they were discussing. My eyes rolled until they stopped on my adopted parents. My mother's eye

  • From Ex to In-law   Chapter 23— Sweet Deception

Raphael’s POV After the long moment of silence, I picked up my phone and was about to text Diana to let her know about the change of things, but I stopped halfway into the text. I wondered If she was going to like it. I didn't want to jeopardise this opportunity I had to marry the woman of my dreams.Gramps noticed that my behaviour was a little bit off. "Are you thinking about the past?" He asked "No, I am worried about Diana.""Diana? Why?" "I don't think she's gonna like the idea of inviting all this many people to the introduction.""Then don't tell her about it" "Gramps?" I protested."Come on son, do you want her or not?""I want her so much Gramps""Then do as I say.""But if I don't tell her she's going to come the way she's supposed to dress to an office-""That's not a big deal" he interrupted "That can be arranged, Raphael""But how Gramps?""It's simple, does she not have friends?""Gramps? What does her friend have to do with this?" "Are you going to listen to me or
